I think Subban is a real good player and all. But they should have let someone offer sheet the guy and taken the picks. One guy, even a top flight defenseman, doesn't make a Stanley Cup winner. This is way too much for any single player, and their depth will suffer for it. They'll have a never ending string of plugs and inexperienced kids populating their team for the next 8 years.
I'll say this: Holland did as well as he could with his offers to other FA that chose to go elsewhere - besides maybe Gilbert which could have been a cheap improvement and still left room for the top-2 or -4 defenseman we were seeking. Despite his compounded failure to "nut-up" in previous off-seasons, I honestly believe he did all within his power to get the players we needed this off-season (given the current sad state of the team, which is his doing). If they don't want to come here, you can't force them and shouldn't grossly overpay them.
However, there is absolutely ZERO excuse for the Quincey signing. That is disappointment turning into full-blown, unavoidable, mature, objective, and justified RAGE. Holland did what he always does when he misses out on his target: slaps some tape and shoe-polish on trash and tries to pass it off as a "bargain" or a "consolation prize". We aren't getting the sirloin because they ran out of prime rib; we've been fed a steady diet of cold spam. For that, Holland should be replaced.
Going a little far here. I'm as irritated as the next guy, and probably more than most. But rather than "tank it" how about we just give open spots to deserving kids and see what they can do? Seemed to work out well last year. I don't know about anybody else but I'd love to add a 6'4 200+ lb Mantha, and a 6'4 200+ lb Sproul to our lineup. As long as he doesn't trade anything valuable away and/or sign some washed up old guy (Alfie) we could very well see
Probably won't compete for a Cup, maybe won't make the playoffs even. But maybe, just maybe, we get a little bigger, a little faster, a little bit more hungry, and a little harder to play against.
Who knows, but I don't think we're getting NIskanen. At this point, someone, Tampa or otherwise, is going to give him a huge offer, and it's next to impossible to imagine Holland matching let alone beating. And again, should we be upset about that specifically? I'm not so sure, because again, we're talking one big year on a great team. He hasn't proven that much, and that's a lot of money and years to throw at a guy who might not keep it up. The bigger concern is whether we let lower-priced targets go because we were chasing Niskanen. I don't like the way this day is shaping up right now at all.
Well, he didn't pursue Ryan because of his subpar playoffs, so now Holland is pursuing Cleary because of his "remarkable" playoffs.
Holland needs to trade himself for Steve Yzerman. Let's move on already.
Haha. Yes, Steve "Who needs defense or goaltending?" Yzerman, whose team has bombed the past two seasons. He was left a capable team by his predecessor and has failed utterly to maintain it. Instead, he has ignored its needs and stocked it with bad contracts.
Because we do so much of that! passing on Ryan for example. Nyquist and tatar will be lucky to score as many goals per season COMBINED as what Ryan does. he is a proven 30-35 goal per year guy.
Vinny LeCav to expensive. Signs with Philly for 4.5 million per year. Weiss sign with us for 4.9 million per year. over the last 4 years Vinny has produced 205 points in the regular season and Weiss produced 170. We are paying more money for LESS PRODUCTION!
Alfie-signs for 5.5 million. Clarkson signs for 5.2 million. Who is the better bet to score 30 goals in 2013/14? How about 14/15? 15/16? Again, more money for less production!
But next year we have a ton of money available. True. To spend on what? more over 35 forwards? That is our recent history. Pass on the big names-the few that make it and blow our money on nothing.
