Cleary NOT reporting to Grand Rapids

09 October 2015 - 11:26 AM

Holland said he did not know if cleary will now retire from active play, but that seems to be the case. Holland spoke to me yesterday about cleary's "passion for the game," & cleary's interest in management/player issues.

Confirmed - Helen St. James, Det.FP:

Daniel Cleary not reporting to minors, according to Red Wings general manager Ken Holland

Ken Holland said it is between club and Daniel Cleary whether he gets paid salary, even as he told Wings he's not reporting to minors.

Well if Cleary doesn't want the $1,000,000 I will glady suit up to take his place in GR lol. I imagine him being offered some made-up position as "Special Associate Assistant Coordinator and Consultant of Player Perspectives and Development" within the Wings organization. Didn't Chelios have a position like that for a while?

Seriously though, I'm quite happy he is refusing to report as this frees up a roster spot in GR for another young guy. They have enough leadership down there with Hoggan, Miele, and Paetsch. No need for Cleary  in GR.

OEL Poll: Would you do it?

08 February 2015 - 03:43 PM

Last night's game against the 'Yotes was a great opportunity to watch Oliver Ekman-Larson and he might be the closest thing to Lidstrom I've seen since #5 hung em up.  He would fit in with the Wings room and system quite well and would slot everyone else down to where they probably should be. He's only 23, has a 5.5 cap hit and is signed through the 2018/19 season. As much as I would love the Wings to acquire a complementary piece (Petry, Franson), what they really need is a replacement for #5. We've got some good D prospects coming up, but they all appear to be 2nd/3rd pairing guys. We need a true #1 guy again.

OEL won't come cheap, he leads all defencmen in goals, his cap hit is reasonable. and he's signed long term. I would love to see Kenny offer: Mantha/a D prospect of the Yotes choice/1st round pick.

Would you make that trade? Do you think it's enough to pry OEL away from AZ?

I'll tabulate the results after a few days, I'm curious to see if I've really over-valued OEL based on his offence or if others think he will develop into a player of Lidstrom's caliber or not.

Petry next Oiler to be shopped - FTLOG Kenny, get it done!

07 January 2015 - 12:47 PM

Jeff Petry will probably be the next player the Oilers discuss in trades, according to HNIC’s Elliotte Friedman. (Sat. Jan. 3rd)

I've seen him play quite a bit this year and he would be a nice addition to our blue line. I have no idea what the Oil would want in a trade for him but it would be worth pursuing as he has a great stick, which he uses to break up the rush and make good first passes out of the zone. He's not going to overwhelm anyone with his offence but he plays a nice safe game and did chip in with 7 goals and 10 assists last year.

He's Dan Petry's (former Tiger's pitcher for you puck only folks) son and he was born in Michigan too so you would think he may welcome a return to his mother state.

He's only 28 so not a rental and he was a 2nd round pick so maybe a 2nd tier prospect (Ferraro?) and a 3rd round pick would get it done? Or how about Kindl for Petry straight up? Oh, and there's also the little matter of him being a RIGHT handed shot too! For The Love Of God Kenny, do something about our crappy D and GET IT DONE!

Do we need to start a petition? Bombard Kenny with anonymous emails? Start sending highlight reels of Petry in to the Wings front office? What can we do to end the era of the only Kindle who can't read (a play) and let Quincey take the 7th D spot?
