#2428966 Trade/Buyout thread

Posted by WingedWheel91 on 09 July 2013 - 10:55 AM

Just because there hasn't been anything happening the past few days, I decided to come up with a ridiculous series of moves that will never happen but aren't as far fetched as other things that have happened since July 1st.

1. Trade Samuelsson to NYI for a 7th round pick. (With $22 Million in Cap Space, a once 30 goal scorer with one year left at $3 million isn't the worst gamble)

2. Trade Kyle Quincey, Brendan Smith, Teemo Pulkinen and a 1st round pick for Keith Yandle. (I can hear the groans already, but hear me out - Kyle Quincey is useless and makes $3.7 million, Brendan Smith is certainly going to make ATLEAST $1.5 Mllion next season, which already covers Yandle's cap hit. Teemu Pulkinen is another undersized winger, which we now have an abundance of as an Eastern conference team. The first round pick is going to be 25+ and we have a solid group of prospects already. So the real trade comes down to Brendan Smith vs Keith Yandle... We know who the better player is, and Yandle is only 2.5 years older with a reasonable cap hit. I have always felt our problem last season was offence from our defence, and now we solve that. Imagine what this group of forwards can do when they don't have to spend 25 seconds of each shift in there own zone.

3. Sign RFA'S

4. Sign Ron Hainsey as our 6th D Man.

5. Trade TooToo for whatever you can.

Zetterberg - Datsyuk - Abdelkader
Franzen - Weiss - Alfredsson
Nyquist - Helm - Tatar
Miller - Andersson - Eaves

(Emmerton, Bertuzzi)

Yandle. - Dekeyser
Kronwall - Ericsson
Kindl - Hainsey

(Lashoff)

Howard
Gustavsson

And There's your 23 man roster.

I still think we are after a top 4 D-man moving Sammy will help with the money but we have to many player already so I like to think Sammy Eaves hate to say it but Emerton then Totoo if we sign Brunner

No, the $2.3m total is with Alfredsson's bonus deferred. Based solely on number, they are above the cap.

Well at least I can say I was right the first time

If Alfredsson is the start of a big summer, it's going to be a good one.  If he is the end, next season is going to be every bit of the slog last was.

I wouldn't mind this deal at all if A.) We'd already re-signed Brunner and B.) we'd been able to unload Sammy.

I won't hate this deal as long as we don't re-sign Cleary. I will hate everything if we don't re-sign Brunner.

I don't know if any if these things are related, but I have feels and it makes sense in my head right now.

#2425632 How much is too much?

Posted by The Axe on 03 July 2013 - 09:09 PM

I dont want to hear it anymore. Its an assinine argument to discuss millions of dollars and whos worth what.

Proof: We had Bertuzzi, Samuelsson, Tootoo, and White RIDING THE FREAKING PINE IN THE PLAYOFFS. That's 8.5 MILLION DOLLARS doing nothing for us. NOTHING. Isn't it obvious NOW that our GM is an imbecil? So let's keep our discussions to "who benefits us more" instead of "what can we afford". Im sorry for the capgeek thread. Thats obviously not a helpful tool, as our buffoon GM only looks for loyalty points and not value.

"5 million is too steep for Lecavalier."

You had White and Sammy on the bench, so how's that?

"6 million is too steep for Horton."

You had White, Sammy, and Tootoo on the bench, so how's that?"

Is there anyone on this planet that believes healthy Bertuzzi/Sammuelsson/White/Tootoo playing in place of Nyquist/Eaves/Colo/Miller gets us by the Ducks and Blackhawks? Hell no.

So we must all come to the logical conclusion - money/salary cap is being poorly utilized. The problem is NOT that we dont have enough.

FIRE HOLLAND. HE STINKS.

#2425607 Brunner Contract Talks

It's sad that Holland will let a guy like this walk when he is willing to 're sign Cleary at 3mil/year

I agree with this. Holland will sign 20 bozos to 40 mil total, but will scratch his head and tell us the price is too steep on an 8 million dollar norris candidate. Meanwhile, we have 7 million of salary RIDING THE PINE for 14 playoff games. Holland is a buffoon.

This frustrates me a whole lot more than not signing Parise and Suter. I gave no f*** about not signing those two individuals, but this is just very frustrating any way you shake it. That Sammy was signed to a multi-year deal for $1.5 less last year just hurts my brain, two-year term or not. I've got a feeling that Holland's going to have to have a hell of a weekend if he doesn't want to lose the faith of those that still believe that the "best GM in the business" isn't just resting on his laurels and a strong scouting staff.

Holland is Lucy. We're Charlie Brown. The specific football changes every offseason (and trade deadline), but the basic concept/dynamic stays the same.

What really irks me is that seemingly everything he says is a crock. I mean, this DRAFTING IS EVERYTHING. YOUTH. HOMEGROWN TALENT BAY-BEE kick - is that why we signed Samuelsson, Colaiacovo, and Tootoo? Is that why we very seriously pursued Suter and Parise? Is that why we swooned for Salo?

We went with the kids out of sheer necessity and desperation. And over the course of their stay - or maybe all at once, in a Eureka! moment - Holland realized, "Hey...kids = I can do and say whatever I want and no matter what the eventual outcome, I'm covered! We don't make the playoffs? It's a rebuild! We make it to the WCF? Ha! We don't do rebuilds here in Hockeytown! I can't land a big-name player? Drafting is everything! We're so homegrown! We are ridiculously smallish up front, especially down the middle? We just drafted some big guys! And drafting is everything! True, we won't see them for years, if at all, but every team goes through dry spells because that's how it is in The Cap Era! So get off my case about not signing some quality NHL power-forward guy who could score that Game 7 overtime goal against the 'hawks, the reality is there are 30 teams in this league! Two to tango! Maybe a two-for-one! Or a three-for-one! Or a three-for-two!!!! We like our team! We're gonna kick some tires! We're set on D - and we're looking hard for a high-end first-or-second-pair defenseman! We don't need you, Flip, because we have options now! Wait, we may need you, Flip, because I was trolled into thinking we had options - but we don't! Or maybe I'm just lazy/inept/crunk! Or maybe a four-for-three!!!!!!

Horrible move by Holland. You'll pay Sammy 3 million a year, but you won't pay Vincent 4.5? The guy would of been our 3rd best forward. You wouldn't pay 4.5 million for a top 3 forward? Come on. The Wings can't score. They haven't been scoring for YEARS. How do you fix such a problem? PAY A FEW EXTRA BUCKS AND SIGN SOME DECENT TOP 6 FORWARDS. Would you rather have Vincent at 4.5 a season, or Cleary at 3. Seriously.

I will use my magical crystal ball and tell you what Holland will do in the next week:

Cleary for 3 million a season for 3-4 years.

Sign Brunner for 2-3 million for 3-4 years.

Buy-out Carlo.

"We like our team." - Holland

DONE. We will have an IDENTICAL team to last year, except Flipulla will be gone. The Wings need 1-2 top 6 forwards. The Wings have too many players signed, and Kenny seems not to care. Get rid of a few, and get BETTER ONES. WE HAVE THE SPACE. GETTER DONE.

I will bet ANYONE on here $20 that Philly will win the cup before the Wings do. Making moves, even if a few are bad, is better than doing nothing. And Kenny has basically made ZERO moves for 5 years.

I'm guessing Vinny may have gone for the team that offered him term and a NMC... I'm sure Detroit or Dallas offered him at least $4.5 but probably only for 2-3 years.  ...and hopefully Holland has learned that not every player deserves a NMC.

I am a little disappointed... but more in Vinny than Holland.  So... Whatevs.

Why are you disappointed in him? He obviously believes he can play for 5 more years and he doesn't want to move his family again. That's a pretty reasonable thing to want, and that he was willing to sign for a very reasonable $4.5 million is also telling that he wasn't out for the money, as he probably could've gotten close to that much in less years of playing. On a 2-3 year deal, he's easily still a $6 million and up caliber player, so 5 and $4.5 isn't bad at all, and it'll be even easier in those 4th and 5th years when the cap gets back up to around $80 million. Again, I don't think Vinny will put the Flyers over the top as there are other issues at play, but I think he could've gone a long way to putting the Wings over the top the next few years.

This frustrates me a whole lot more than not signing Parise and Suter. I gave no f*** about not signing those two individuals, but this is just very frustrating any way you shake it. That Sammy was signed to a multi-year deal for $1.5 less last year just hurts my brain, two-year term or not. When we sign the guys we do at what we do and then I see deals like this, I wonder if Holland even tries. I don't know how people can continue to defend him when he seems to so clearly be unable to maneuver well with free agents anymore. Lecavalier at $5 million for 5 years at worst wouldn't have been as bad as Sammy for $3 million, ever. That he went to Philly for $4.5 though is even sillier. Franzen has close to a $4 million cap hit and he's already more worthless than Vinny would likely be in his 4th and 5th years.

At this rate, I think we'll be lucky if we can sign Brunner again.

And by "at this rate," I don't mean one guy that we didn't before free agency even began, I'm talking about the last four off-seasons of failing to truly make this team better via free agency or trade. I get that development and the draft are vitally important, more than ever in the cap era, but it takes a fool to think development alone will put you over the top. Clearly Holland doesn't believe that it'll work, otherwise he wouldn't pursue anyone, so don't even try to kid yourselves into thinking his schtick about being focused on the draft and development after he comes up empty is anything more than lip service to his local lapdogs at MLive and the Free Press.

Again, what shouldn't worry anyone is whether or not Holland believes you need to be able to add NHL talent to your roster via trade or free agency. What should cause you to just shake your head is that Holland just doesn't seem able to get that job done anymore, and it's a shame. Any team built around Datsyuk and Zetterberg with decent goaltending is close to being a contender. We saw that clearly in the last playoffs. But it's going to continue to go to waste if Holland doesn't pull up his britches and take some chances. So what if deals don't always work out? For the love, grow up and deal with it, that's life!

Maybe Lecavalier had other reasons to go to Philly, but at this moment, given what is known, it's hard to imagine. He doesn't automatically make them a contender by a long-shot, but if he had signed with the Wings, after what we saw from our young guys and what he'd add, I'll be damned if I wouldn't be very, very confident heading into the playoffs the next couple of years at least, probably more. But as of now, it's hard to have confidence in that because once again, I just don't have confidence in Holland's ability to make the moves that will put us over the top, and we're just too close to keep wasting opportunities.
