#2297689 Johan Franzen wants to 'have more fun'

Posted by Doc Holliday on 27 April 2012 - 07:51 PM

Seeing Franzen in the last few seasons, whether he is drawing the tougher defensive match-up or not thanks to being on a line with Datsyuk, its not like the guy is spending all his time checking and back-checking. In fact, I don't think I've seen him do so in a long time. He floats, offensive zone or defensive zone. He stops doing that and THEN his production, and really, his overall effectiveness will increase.

I agree, he would be great in a complimentary role. Unfortunately, the guy was signed to an 11-year contract expecting him to be closer to 40 goals than 25-30 while continuing to do the things that got him on the team in the first place. He has done neither.

40 goals for a $3.9 million cap hit?

#2295011 Babs calls out Kenny, sort of!

Posted by RusDRW on 21 April 2012 - 05:12 AM

People around are screaming "Rinne won this series"... I don't agree. It is our forward depth that did not exist. This is partially on Kenny (someone like Umberger or Vermette would have been excellent addition) and partially injuries to Helm and Eaves. Our D and G were actually fine. Almost all games were decided by 1 goal and Jimmy didn't let more than 3. For example, the following offense roster would have taken us further to the second round, we didn't simply had good 3rd and 4th lines...

Franzen - Datsuyk - Bertuzzi
Hudler - Zetter - Filppula
Cleary - Vermette - Abdelkader
Holmstrom - Helm - Eaves

(Nyquist)

similarly, you may take out Vermette and put Umberger on the second line instead while delegating Fil to center the third one.

just one trade for semi-good player and absense of injuries. This happens. I'm dissapointed though.

the worst thing is that our leaders are now one year older.

#2291923 What's Kenny Holland's Offseason Plan?

Posted by korrowan on 18 April 2012 - 12:28 AM

This team is boned. Holland resigned Bert which was a huge mistake as he has done nothing but that so called fight against Weber. Franzen is useless and for being this big time playoff guy has done squat in the last 2 playoffs. If Lids leaves this team becomes seriously mediocre and I doubt Holland will be able to get anyone like Suter or Parise as any FA would obviously see the ship is sinking. Making the playoffs is meaningless if you just squander you opportunities not only at the end of the regular season but then in the playoffs. This team needs kids that have passion like many other teams have. All these old guys they keep resigning will get them no where.

When the Predators scored the first goal tonight I wanted to hang myself for recording this game and staying up late to watch the Wings fail to finish for 2 periods and then hand the Predators the game...again even though I know that is par for the course.

#2292042 WCQF Game Four GDT : Predators 3 at Red Wings 1

Posted by Nightfall on 18 April 2012 - 07:58 AM

After glancing over the comments here in this thread, I am glad about one thing....

That the Red Wings Management is in charge of this team.

Does the team need some change? You bet it does, and Holland will make the changes necessary to make them competitive. People soon forget the 4 cups in the last 15 years, which is more than any other team in the NHL has gotten in that time. Wings fans are spoiled, and they expect a championship every season. That kind of thing doesn't happen every year though. People still get all giddy when they think about the team we had in 2002 and how that was a guaranteed cup win, and yet that team was almost eliminated by Colorado in the WCF. Vancouver kept the same team as last season, thinking that they were going to be able to make it to the cup finals again, and that didn't work out. Hell, everyone was banking on Pittsburgh doing some good and look how that series is turning out.

Getting through the playoff grind takes more than skill. It takes some puck luck, which the Wings haven't had this series, and health, which the Wings have also not had this series by losing Darren Helm.

I am not going to blame Holland or Babs for these losses. The team is just what Holland built. A team that was at the top of the NHL before they hit the injury bug. No depth? You are right about that. The Wings should have signed players in the offseason to address the depth. The cost in draft picks to be active at the trade deadline were ludicrous. I wouldn't have spent that much to give away our futures.

In the end, the Wings may be done this series, and if they are Holland and company will go back to work. Next season, we will have new players and make a 23rd consecutive playoff appearance. We may even be #1 in the NHL again which the fans here will be raving about. Then, in the playoffs (1st or 2nd round), we will be out of it again and everyone will be screaming for the heads of the coaching staff and management team. Because here in Detroit, its either cup or failure. Those are pretty lofty standards.

I don't believe he meant that incident. Oh, btw, Schenn is back out there and that's good. So should Ashamn get a suspension because Schenn "didn't" get hurt????? I do realize it is a match penalty, btw.

The NHL suspends the result, not the action, so according to the NHL, Asham will just be fined.

So we're judging "best" based on 10 game sample sizes now? Ooh, ooh, I can play that game too! Malkin's the best! No, wait, I mean Stamkos! Perry! Gagner!!!

10 games over 14 months doth not a best player make. Considering he's probably one hard hit away from the end of his career, the jury's most definitely still out on this one. And FWIW, Philly's neutralized him today.

Come on ....it's not 10 games....he has been the best or in the conversation since 2005. I don't like the kid- he is arrogant and a whiner but when healthy, he is the best player in the NHL. No need for a sample size on that.
