The NHL is expected to announce the 2014 Winter Classic this Sunday during a media availability and unveiling at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit, according to an announcement by the league on Thursday morning.
The press release explains that an NHL special event press conference will be held, along with a jersey unveiling. The press conference is scheduled to begin at 10:30 a.m., ET.
Obviously, this leads one to believe that the league is planning to formally announce that the Winter Classic will be hosted by the Detroit Red Wings.
Due to the lockout, the 2013 Winter Classic was canceled. It was originally scheduled to be played at the University of Michigan's football stadium between the Red Wings and Toronto Maple Leafs. According to multiple reports -- including a reported admission from Detroit general manager Ken Holland -- the 2014 Winter Classic will be held in the same venue, between the same teams.
In addition, the jerseys expected to be worn by both teams were believed to be leaked last month.
