What the Wings are doing for the fans

Actually, according to the NHL's site, 21 games are nationally televised on one of those three: http://www.nhl.com/ice/schedulebyseason.htm?season=20122013&gameType=2&team=DET&network=&venue= I read somewhere that the Lightning are selling 200 seats for $200 each for a season ticket. They're nosebleed, I'm sure, but $8.33 per game is cheaper than the local junior team.

    NHL Center Ice

I'm torn on this. I really don't want to give them any of my money after this third fiasco. On the other hand, I really want to see the Wings. I have no option for that other than Gamecenter. I'm not going to use Hockeystreams because of the legal issues. I paid $159 for Gamecenter in 2011-12 which comes out to $1.93 per Wings game. $50 for 48 games comes to $1.04 per Wings game. OTOH, 21 of the 48 will be nationally televised in the States. Of that number, I'll be able to see the 4 on NBC. I don't really mind watching the games the next day, sans commercials. The figures above aren't completely accurate either, because I have watched plenty of non-Wings games too. The question is: do I try to make a "point" with the NHL by not subscribing even if that means missing an entire year of the Wings? I guess I'd be more P.O.'d if I believed that Mr. I was a driving force behind the lockout.
  3. You forgot that part about how he'll sign for $2 million per just for the privilege of playing for the Red Wings. But otherwise QFT.

    Bettman Re-Alignment Proposal

I like the concept. I really don't like it that currently the Wings only get to play the Leafs once in the blue moon. I don't think they should go back to the names (Norris, Prince of Wales, et al). After all, those were only in use from 1974-93 out of the NHL's 94 year history. Plus, hearing the "Norris" division always reminded me of how the Norris family drove the Red Wings into the ground and the "Adams" division always reminded me of how Jack Adams traded Terrible Ted to the Blackhawks. I also think that they should rename the Adams Trophy the William "Scotty" Bowman Trophy.

Lidstrom agrees to 1-year, $6.2m contract

Yeah, that Lidstrom sure is an ***hole, isn't he. Glad you pointed that out.

Got that right. Too bad the FA pickings are so slim.

    Favorite Playoff Series

2002 vs. Avs--Classic 1997 vs. Ducks--a sweep, but a sweep with six extra OT periods. A couple of VERY late nights there. 1998 vs. Caps--not so much because the series was awesome, but just to see them raise the Cup after the off-season tragedy and then handing the Cup to Vladdie The '94 series versus San Jose is very fresh in my mind too. Obviously it's not a favorite. Remembering it certainly makes me appreciate 97, 98, 02, and 08 even more.

11/21 GDT: Flames 4 at Red Wings 5 (OT)

Actually, the way the Wings had played on the powerplay most of the game, the best thing that could have happened to Calgary was going on the kill. They had, what, three PP opportunities without a shot?!? Iginla lost his composure again. You can't have your best player off the ice at the most important time of the game because he decided to pick a fight with a fourth liner. The man is talented but he is also a major hothead. Kipper deserved a better fate than this tonight.

    NHL Gamecenter

I have to say that I'm really enjoying having GameCenter. The PS3 app could use some tweaking, but by and large I'm just thrilled to be able to watch HD hockey. I've found myself watching games between two teams that I otherwise would not care in the least about (e.g. Washington and Atlanta today). The ability to watch two games picture-in-picture or four games at the same time on the PC is cool, but I don't think the utility is great enough to make it worth adding to the PS3 app.

Found out tonight that evidently I am within the blackout range for Wild games. Crazy since I live five hours away from the Twin Cities. Fox Sports Wisconsin does occasionally carry the Wild games, but not very often, especially not when the Bucks are on.

    NHL Gamecenter

Good question. You probably should call/email them. I've "only" got one PS3, so I can't comment. I did, however, buy GameCenter tonight. I had a meeting at 7 P.M., so I watched the first bit and then used the pseudo-DVR features to catch up on the rest. My only gripe (which is minor) is that I wish they'd let you set a speed for it like you can on the PC version. Mine kept switching between the top speed and the next one down. Not a huge deal and it didn't really interfere with my enjoyment of the game. Seeing as I can only see the rare Wings game (and never in HD up to this point), seeing the first game I wanted to see in HD was a treat. The DVR-like features work nicely too. Oh yeah, it worked great on my Linux box with the latest Firefox and the second Flash Square preview.

    NHL Gamecenter

Actually, this year you can choose either the home or away broadcast. I agree that the price is a bit steep. At least they sweeten the pot a bit by being able to watch any game from the previous two seasons and some historically important games going back to the 1960s. I don't know if I've ever seen a full game with Gordie Howe playing, for example. I'm in no-man's-land for hockey so I don't have much choice. I cannot get Center Ice or the NHL Network via my cable system. DirectTV would cause my bill to skyrocket. Actually, my cable system + GameCenter is cheaper than getting DirectTV without Center Ice. I won't mind seeing the local commercials. They'll remind me of home.

I've been holding off trying GameCenter Live since I use Linux and didn't want to subscribe only to find out it wasn't going to work. Now that the PS3 app is out (which looks awesome), I'm thinking of taking the plunge. I have Versus on my cable system (in SD) and NBC (in HD) so that will be covered. I live 1/2 hour north of Green Bay, WI. I assume I won't run into any problems with blackouts, except possibly for games vs. the Wild. Any other GameCenter/Center Ice users in Wisconsin care to comment? I checked a couple of IP location sites and they get my city right. Also, if you just missed the end of the game, do you have to wait until it is archived to watch it?

    Small rule change confirmed

Nobody needs ties ever. You can say you hate the shootout all you want and you are certainly entitled to your opinion, but you cannot deny that the shootout is exciting. It gets people on their feet. I, for one, do not want to go back to the "play not to lose" OT snoozefest that used to be so prevalent. A four-on-four OT (and if you want to add three-on-three as some have suggested, go ahead), keeps things exciting and theoretically favors the more skilled team. The shootout should do the same. If coaches hate shootouts, play all-out to win in regulation or OT then.

Is Tampa Bay your second favorite team now?

I will always be a Stevie Y. fan and I wish him success. He'll need all the help he can get in that trainwreck of a franchise. But I can't imagine myself ever caring about the 'Ning much less actively rooting for them.
