Among all the sky is falling talk (and not undeservedly so I might add) A thought hit me, "so when do we pull a rabbit out of our hat?"
I mean after all we've done it for 20 plus years,....by blind luck almost we trip on, fall into or out right steal some guy, who becomes the guy for us and ensures this red wings train keeps rolling down the tracks.
The divine intervention of the Detroit Red wings is well documented.
We wanted Pat lafontaine in 83' but the islanders drafted him first,...we had to settle for some kid name Yzerman.
In 89 we drafted the best player of the last 20 or so years and probably the second best D man of all time (i'd argue first, but what do I know) 53rd overall. The flames drafted a finn 3 picks up Veli-Pekka Kautonen. Heard of him? Nope me neither.
We got Draper off the jets for a dollar
We got murphy from T.O. and the leafs faithful laughed hard, until he became an integral part of our D corps. '
Homer, Datsyuk, Zetterberg ect. ect.
We all know this stuff,..and yet the thing that really gets me about our team is how freaking resilient we are.
We survived two extremely high value D men having their careers ended and came out no worse for wear. Quick,..you tell me what would happen to a team like the blackhawks if Duncan Keith (God Forbid) had an accident like that?
We signed Uwe Krupp, we managed to lure Ozzie back (and win a cup with him for God's sake) after we kicked him to the curb,.....
Time and time again, just when you think this team is toast, something completely magically happens that ensures your ability to wear the winged wheel proudly for another decade or so.
I have no idea if we're out of magic beans. I couldn't tell you if we'll never challenge again or anything crazy like that. All I can go off is past experience and past experience tells me that this team will find away (and will probably do so at the expense of another team).
When I guess on what that magic may be i'm left with an interesting thought, say we do miss the playoffs this year......Remember that new rule? The one that says any team that misses the playoffs is first pick eligible? Paging Tinkerbell,....we need more fairy dust,..... With the first round pick in the 2013 draft, the Detroit red wings select,............
people, we do not want this team to lose on purpose (again) to get another high draft pick. At least now they can blame it on the injuries. All kidding aside, this team was built on extremely high draft picks, I take no joy in them sucking. I would take joy in seeming them come in 9th place for 10 years like the leafs did.
Carolina has a really bad habit of icing teams based on the coaches input. I realize that happens everywhere in the league, but explain how else there are four former maple leafs on this squad (and not from a good leafs era either)? Now that Muller has taken over for maurice I fully expect more habs to come carolina's way. Hell, they've needed a second line center for at least 3 years, maybe they'll do something really stupid and get scott gomez.
It's completely stupid. The players are the ones suffering for this, the owners and gm's who signed the stupid ass contract in the first place are the ones who should suffer. I'm so tired of seeing guys I know could help other teams have their careers end because gm's over pay.
Yeah I know someone's going to come in here and say something silly like "it's the players own fault" but honestly if you know you're worth a million and a Gm offers three would YOU turn it down?
We should probably trade Datsyuk and Zetterberg too... maybe we can get a young North American player with a mean streak!!!
or better yet, full roster turn over!
first, trade Miller and Draper to Washington for Ovechkin and Backstrom, then trade Howard to Vancouver for Luongo, then bring Gerard Gallant out of retirement and trade him to Calgary for Jerome Iginla... trade Stuart and Rafalski's no trade clauses (not the players themselves, but actually trade their no trade clauses for a bag of pucks - this frees the player up to then be traded), then trade Rafalski for Atlanta's next 12 first round picks and Stuart to Tampa Bay for Vinny Lecavalier and Marty St. Louis... then trade Filppula for Boogard (who needs a soft euro that's defensively responsible and capable of 70+ pt seasons??!!? - we need toughness!) promote McCollum, Kindl, Brendan Smith and a 14 year old prospect from BC - because he won a ton of fights in Bantam AAA and we really need that grit on the back end... force Holmstrom and Osgood to retire... finally, get everyone to restructure their contracts (even though the CBA doesn't allow contract restructuring - they'll make an exception!) for league minimum
Flip the situation. If we had been the team to claim him, I doubt you'd have the same view.
It's not fair, It wasn't fair when the blues (A team I can't stand) lost two players to waivers back to back. It made even less sense given that he was a free agent. Like if he was contracted to a euro team I'd get that, but he played not even half a season, then had his contract terminated.
as has been said, Stan Lee created basically the entire universe. But it was the people after him who expanded on these characters and made them make sense. He's been riding the coattails of his creations for years and now comes across as a incoherent old codger.
If the nhl wanted this done right (and it never needed to be done at all,...) they should have got a guy like geoff johns (who wouldn't touch this with a ten foot poll)
I live in Raleigh, and the canes are the 2nd team I follow closely.
We despise the penguins here in Raleigh about as much as i'm sure they do in Detroit. Makes me sick, every time there's a pens game the little pittsburgh transplants come out of the woodwork.
Anyway, the call was beyond weak. The News and Record beat guy (who does a good job of cover hockey btw) inquired the league about it who said basically "Toronto's sole job was to determine if the puck had crossed the line, which it did." They claimed they had no sound in Toronto (bull s***,....as the numerous "intent to blow" penalties have bitten us) so they only cared about if it went in.
Here's my thing though......we've had about 12 of these goals go the other way,...I.E. the whistle blows (or doesn't lol) and the ref says the play was dead. The replay very CLEARLY shows the whistle go off long before the puck goes in, yet it's a penguins goal?
At some point, people are going to wake up. All around the league everyone calls red wings fans "tin foil hat wearing conspiracy theorist" because of the 09 playoffs. But how many teams does s*** like this have to happen to when pitts is involved before someone discovers an email or something letting us all know something we've all secretly believed for years; the NHL has favorites and the calls go towards those favorites.
I only saw the actual replay not the game in time before.
Look at Crosby,...jabbering away at the refs. Now I know that's what captains do, but then,.....the ref who's hearing all this motions to him like,..."ok okay, we're going to give it to you, calm down".
Any other player in the NHL the ref doesn't even give them the time of day and asks the player to step away. Shessh guys,...at least act like he doesn't have your ear 90% of the time.
as other have said Crosby loves to jump and fight guys who have about two fighting majors under their belts so he can feel like the second coming of Gordie Howe or something. I also hate that his team got it's ass kicked and yet his fight is all that was highlighted from that game.
One magical day, he's going to run up against someone who knows how to fight and they're going to beat him within an inch of his life. My heart of hearts hopes it's someone like when he fought zidliky (although not zidliky obviously) Just some random european D man who isn't going to take an ass beating from the NHL's poster boy.
