#2577110 Red Wings acquire Erik Cole, conditional 3rd from Stars

Posted by achildr1 on 02 March 2015 - 12:02 AM

Lol.  Holland's overrated because his assistants are the ones who really do all the scouting, drafting,  development?

If that's the standard, Holland is even better than you think.  Because back when he was the Director of Amateur Scouting the Red Wings scouted and drafted Osgood, Konstantinov, Lidstrom, Lapointe, Fedorov, McCarty, Drake...

He's held, and excelled, at almost every single job in the organization because he's incredibly competent.  No matter what the position, he's excelled at it.  To say otherwise is laughable.

Case in point, in reference to my inability to be swayed (sarcasm)...

I forgot about Holland holding the Director of Amateur Scouting position at that time...which is certainly impressive.

Even since Holland has been making bad trades...they have done a masterful job of rebuilding through scouting/draft. My point was (although i can see where i did a bad job of getting it across) was that we can't say with must accuracy that we can credit Holland for that. There are so many moving pieces with scouting/drafting...but there isn't nearly as much in trading.

I know. I quit my job recently because the guy I trained to be a manager (I'm a manager as well) wanted my job. So instead on sending him to the branch that needed a manager I stepped down and assumed a corporate job I hate. Ain't I a good guy? Praise me.

Obviously that isn't the same situation. I understand your logic, but your trainee wasn't Steve Yzerman. Your boss wasn't Ilitch and you aren't making a truckload of money to run a sports team.

Friendly advice:

If you didn't include your first paragraph and the last line of your response, nobody would be giving your a hard time right now.  But bringing up your fan history and thumping your chest for being a die hard Wings' fan (on a Wings' forum where 90% of us can easily claim the same credentials or more), then following it up with the snarky comment about "thanks for playing" to close your post came off badly.  Very badly.  Most of us try to be friendly to one another here, even if we disagree with something, but when comments like that are made, people are going to gang up on you.

Likewise, if you stated an opinion in some other thread and jimmyemeryhunter (or whoever) posted something belittling and arrogant in response, myself and probably several others would come to your aid and attack the perpetrator.

Its just how we roll.

I appreciate your response. Thanks for being decent...and I only said "thanks for playing" because i was clearly being called out and disrespected before hand. I felt like the person i quoted was being unneccessarily instigating.

You're so informed and enlightened, shouldn't you have the article? I'll wait patiently while you go and find me the article that states that Holland's boss gave him a direct order to do something, and he said no.

http://www.mlive.com..._ilitch_gm.html

"Stevie Y wants to become a GM; we'd love to have him as a GM,'' Ilitch said. "I keep telling Kenny, 'Hey, I want to move you up to president.' He goes, 'I don't want to be a president, I want to be a GM.' So he's going to stay there as GM.''

Holland made it clear he is happy at his current post, which he has held since 1997.

"I'm the general manager, I don't have any interest in becoming president,'' Holland said. "I'm a general manager, that's what I was hired to do.''

Thanks for the attitude.

WOW!  I didn't know you had followed the Wings religiously for over 20 YEARS!!

I'll bet no one else here could say that.

You guys are fascinating today...i didn't call you or anyone other than that kid into question. I respect a lot of the people that post here because they post rational, fact based, respectful responses...I just thought his response ("....just because the vibes Holland gives off tell you that he's a crappy gm") was not accurate and was not what i said. But please go back two needlessly making me into "that guy"

I have a feeling Holland could have traded this same package for a time traveling hossa from 09' and people would still be coming here ripping this move, just because the vibes Holland gives off tell you that he's a crappy gm.

How old are you? May I ask? I turn 29 this month and I've followed the Wings religiously my entire life from age 8. For some reason i actually retain most of the generally useless history, info, players, trades, and dialogue I've heard along the way. I've followed the Wings for the entirety of Holland's tenure as GM and I have a particular addiction to information I've come across about NHL front offices. I like to think, as a fan, I'm about as informed as I can be enough to make the claims I do.

Holland has done a lot of things right in his time with the Wings, but he also had an All-Star cast of Front Office support along the way...not limited to Dellevano, Scotty Bowman (who I believe brought way more than people even thought...and they thought he brought a lot), Nill, Mark Howe, and several others. But since those people have started moving on, his ability to make good trades has nose dived. If Babcock creates good coaches, I believe Holland was created by other good front office people. HE does not seem to be a great stand alone GM. The two things that he is most credited for are also other peoples jobs (cap management and scouting).

This is far more than vibes bro, but thanks for playing.

dont jinx us....you know who runs the leafs...dont you?

:scared:

Ha! Exactly!

It's so awesome that we let Shanahan, Yzerman, and Nill walk and have Holland and Ryan Martin now. Anybody ever seen Holland and Martin in person? Especially Martin. Oh...I love Fischer, but he does not seem like a guy that should end up in the front office.

Holland and Martin both seem like huge pushovers, with Martin looking like and giving the vibe that he's never played hockey (although he may have) and has no clue what he's talking about. Nill, Yzerman, and Shanahan all have experience and the "i run the ship" look and personas. Im still pissed about how Ilitch asked Holland to step up and let Yzerman in and he wouldn't...YZerman should have been the face of this franchise and I'm sure Holland still would have had his prospect-giving-away hands all over everything anyway...

Backman was a long shot to ever play in Detroit and Janmark might end up as a second or third line center in 3 years. Cole helps now and the Wings have plenty of prospects as good or better than the kids they traded. This is a good trade all around.

Im starting to feel better about the trade but I hate when its said that because someone is a long shot, its ok that we used them to over pay. Backman was still a pretty well regarded prospect. I bet Nill thinks very highly of him...and probably Janmark too. I bet Poile is thrilled with Jarnkrok...another player that was supposedly "blocked"...and somehow therefore not worth getting back true value for.

That was so aweful...makes Ozzy and Draper look like Daniel-Day Lewis clones. I seriously cant stand Kane in any sense...such a serious wiener.

Actual trades made today say pretty much otherwise.

You had to have been watching a different planets deadline day(s) (including yesterday) ...a first and Jarnkrok could very well been the ground work to get a much better player than Legwand.

This is why holland should just sit on his hands on deadline day. I think Jarnkrok + 1st could have gotten Edler and actually solved a problem for once.

Also Holland said he wouldn't make a move for a rental - well that meant jack squat.

Yep...exactly. Jarnkrok is a peice I bet Vancouver would looked at a big part of a Edler deal.

As someone who has followed both Collberg and Järnkrok in the SHL as it's now called I can comfortably say that Järnkrok was a much better player in that league.

Järnkrok has a SHL championship as well.

Thanks...exactly my point.

I wouldn't waste a 4th round pick on either of those guys.
Vanek is a rental, and have you seen Collberg?  The guy is like Mantha.  A 2nd round pick and he has a great upside.  I think Montreal overpaid.

Dig into these trades a bit before you start saying that these are just scrub players.

Thanks for giving me more fuel btw...take Collberg and compare him to Jarnkrok in the SEL at the same age. It makes our trade even worse.

Legwand had a NTC  - its not like other teams were asking really. Holland had a sitting duck and he botched the kill brutally. Preds would have lost him for nothing in the offseason - holland had all kinds of leverage.

This^^

Id like to know how many teams offered even a 2nd for Quincey the year we gave a 1st for him. Im coming to think Holland doesnt make trades because he has no ability to haggle or even take advantage of circumatance.

Detroit got a proven commodity and gave up a prospect who probably won't even make the team for another 2 years.

He could, and from most reports of him, will be everything that Legwand is and more after those two years tho. Its why trading Schenn for Kesler made no sense. You only make trades like that when you're one move away from a Cup. This is a bandade on a grenade wound.

Wow, really?  I think Sheahan is much better to be honest.  Then we have guys that haven't even made it to the AHL to consider that have a much better upside than him.

This is so short sighted. Actually Jarnkrok is out performing Sheahans rookie AHL year and he actually has an excuse (moving from the big ice) to have a rough transition. Just because Sheahan is on the big club doesnt mean he's better. Sheahan is likely a third line player long term. If were lucky, he's somewhere between Abby and Mule. Jarnkrok has always been billed as a poor mans Zetterberg and has been playing against men since he was 17.
