I think this is one of those be careful what you wish for scenarios. It reminds me of the Tigers situation. Fans couldn't get Leyland to leave fast enough. He was old, he sucked, relying on past success. Bring in the new guy...same result. But if they only still had Leyland............ As Babs himself said, sometimes the devil you know is better than the one you don't.
That said, I think he will want some sort of player personnel input if he stays. He's mentioned enough times in the past few seasons about the lack of talent and depth, and he has seemed to go out of his way to put players that Holland has brought in like Tootoo and Weiss in the doghouse with no way out.
They said on the radio 97.1 Weiss was one of Babcock choices. So was Cleary
26 years old and 200 games of experience isn't Marek Zidlicky levels of experience, but it's not like he's Xavier Ouellet either. You're making it seem like it's reasonable to expect rookie mistakes out of him because "he's young", when in reality he's played the better part of three full season (admittedly one was only 48 games). He shouldn't still be making bush league mistakes.
The Abby comparison is a reach. Abby didn't produce well until this season, but he did everything else right. He played special teams, worked hard, was defensively sound, forechecked, was physical. The only weak part of his game was his negligible offensive skills. Conversely, Smith A) doesn't produce offense, B) doesn't play good defense, C) doesn't play on the special teams, D) isn't phyiscal. Abby had value, even when he didn't score. Which is why he stayed in the lineup. What's Brendan's value to the team? Seriously, what is it that he does well?
Edit: FYI, Kindl has only played roughly 250 games and is universally considered a bust. So if Smith still sucks in 50 games is he a bust too? Or is Kindl still too young and inexperienced to really know?
This is Smith's 2nd full season. Kindl is 2 years older and has been with the Wings around 4 years. It is funny how Kindl has scored every time he's played since being benched though.
Kindl and Smith haven't panned out. Ericsson has been a decent profit considering where we drafted him. He should probably be traded but he isn't a bust. We kind of need all three of Marchenko, Sproul and Oullette to turn out great because trading for defenseman of quality is nearly impossible these days. And we have to admit that they will all need to be in the lineup soon, so Holland needs to make space.
I context of where drafted and currently I would agree. In contract terms I feel Ericsson has been the worst on the team. Either way Marchenko should be active in the line up for one of them.
