if one thing has been made clear with these injuries, it's that tatar/nyquist are not players in the mold of datsyuk/zetterberg - they aren't the guys that are going to carry your team. they're secondary players.
WTF it's their rookie seasons. Didn't realize Datsyuk/Z could have taken over for Stevie/Feds in 02/03 time frame
Alfredsson is far from useless. Anytime you can add a player who will help your team, even if it's only going to be for a year or two, you do it. His signing, and the Weiss contract, aren't the problem. Weiss's season long groin issues make Weiss a problem, but that's not something you know will happen, and any player might get hurt.
The real problem was that Holland made a bad assumption that he'd be able to trade someone when he signed Cleary. That led to no roster space or cap room for Nyquist. I said at the time that I didn't mind CLeary coming back, but the deal shouldn't have been finalized until someone was traded.
There was absolutely no way Cleary was more deserving of a roster spot than anyone else. His resigning was pathetic, and anyone who points out his "playoff warrior" status should take a deeper look at how he accumulated those points.
Wait, so you guys have problems with the play of Cleary, Samuelsson, and Bertuzzi this season. Got it. That's been made abundantly clear by a ridiculous amount of posters.
Weiss, though, it is ok for him to play like garbage. And don't give me he actually played better because he didn't. Weiss has sucked at least as badly as the rest of the players mentioned this season. He was terrible.
Weiss had a rough go of it coming off of an injury plagued season. Yeah, that's true. None of those other guys were coming off of injury plagued seasons, so that's totally different.
I get it, though.... Weiss gets the benefit of the doubt over those other guys because of all that he has given to the team in previous seasons. I mean, he contributed to a Stanley Cup victory in Detroit....
Seriously, though, can someone please explain to me this double standard?
Sorry - I know it isn't a Weiss thread. I agree that the kids are contributing better than the aforementioned veterans have this season, including Stephen Weiss (at least just as much as the others mentioned).
There is no double standard. Cleary, Samuelsson, and Bertuzzi, have been s***ty for more than just a season, none of them should have been signed, or should have retired. Weiss has played 26 games with the Wings and some speculating he started the season with the injury. We haven't even seen enough of Weiss to even develop an idea of his game like/hate. With in the last 4-5 years, Weiss was at one point a go to guy for his team, where Cleary, Samuelsson, and Bertuzzi again should have been off the time for the last few years. He also is at least 5? years younger than all 3 of the other players and is in his prime years..... I'm pretty indifferent if he comes back or not considering the kids are great, How can't you see the difference in circumstances?
he better develop some skills, because as long as Babcock is our coach, this type of player will never be on our team...unfortunately...I for one am rooting for Big Mike to make it to GR after college, then be up within 3 years of that in Detroit...
pretty sure I read an article where Babcock was praising him.
I don't think Holland is the problem. No one could have foreseen how truly bad Weiss, Samuelsson, Cleary, and Quincey have been. Sammy has had success here and elsewhere. Cleary's success in the playoffs seems to be purely a fluke. Quincey had success everywhere but here. Weiss was Florida's #1 star, yet he's nothing here. IMO those are the glaring problems and they seem to be rooted in the system being a problem or our pro scouts being a problem.
That is buls***! Weiss some complained, but I will grant you nobody thought the signing was this bad. Sammy, Q, and especially Cleary. Everyone know they sucked and were terrible choices from the very beginning. The worst of all being Cleary. Get rid of those 3, make Bert the player coming off the bench. Those actions alone will be massive additions by subtractions.
is my guess at a post- trade deadline lineup without injuries. Maybe I'm too optimistic, but Babcock seems to slowly be getting over his Cleary love affair and Bert will probably play his way out of the lineup by that point. The only question is Weiss but he could possibly be shuffled to the 4th line and Helm on 2nd if he keeps playing like he has been.
This season is very depressing. It's not so much that I believe this team is bad or won't make the playoffs, but I simply just do not like the make up of this team, I dislike some of the players, the attitude, the current lines, and the GM's moves. I hope they start to pull there heads out there asses and actually ice the best team we can.
