Miller is good with proper linemates and in the proper context, as is Abdelkader. Their thus-far poor performance is not Holland's fault, nor is that of Stephen Weiss. Cleary is atrocious, though I don't think anyone could have anticipated him being this bad. Samuelsson's contract is not a problem right now, but his presence on the roster is.
That said, this team has the tools it needs to win.
We all notice Franzen when he plays center. Not sure what his face-off stats are, but if they're decent work him there. I think Babcock wants his offense but that's not happening anyway so put him in a defensive role for now.
I know this is at least the 2nd year where people have been clamoring for more Mule as a center. Last year when he was center he was just as a effective, of course if it works Babcock says f*** ti.
Or you could keep those necessary elements while just banning the unnecessary element; fighting. Skating on ice is an integral part of gameplay in ice hockey. Fighting is not.
I get that you're just playing devil's advocate.
But it's only a matter of time before someone says, "people will still get hurt from hits, so you want to ban hitting too?" I hate those arguments because all they do is obscure the point, which should be the minimization of UNNECESSARY risk. Hockey will always be dangerous. I just don't see the benefit of making it more dangerous than it needs to be.
I don't believe in banning fighting, nor do I have a ton of sympathy for people with injuries sustained from years of being a pro athlete. Most of these sports have been around for almost 100 years, if you do not realize the dangers before receiving a pay check you're already brain damaged. When a solider has long term knee problems from years of running, or a fire fighter is burned while putting out a fire, nobody is shocked. These guys are paid an insane amount of money to play a sport. I'm not going to cry for them because they are putting there bodies out there as a result.
A very relevant point as we are still in the playoffs and this is still June.
even more relevant if he you know added context. Cleary 2 goals were literally bounced off of his body by Datsyuk, and 1 was an empty netter, then what 6 secondary assists..... Unless of course points tell the whole story I guess St. James is saying Cleary>Datsyuk, because you know points mean everything. How about the 40x Cleary just losses the puck on the boards, or falls and gives the puck up?
please someone sign into twitter and call this person a ****

Have you seen me disagree with this?
That's a bit harsh. I'm mostly worried about whom he's going to replace.
Hopefully it's a contract that can be buried easily in the minors if need be.
You know I would normally say that's a bit harsh but I am dead serious. Any GM that feels Cleary is a productive member of a SC team obviously has lost it and should no longer have control, and any coach who would play such a useless player on the top 2 lines or even dress him should no longer be leading a team. What's next Cleary to play on the Olympic team too?
Of course we should keep Sammy who couldn't stay healthy at all last season and pay him $3 mill. While we get rid of any actual muscle we have, going into a more physical division. I hope these are only rumors.
I'd actually have to BE a newfie for that to happen. The reality is, is that a team with a bunch of small, skilled players isn't gonna get you far. Do you need skill guys? Yes! But you need guys like Cleary to. Certainly glad Holland doesn't live in your reality or we would be icing a smurf roster like the Habs each and every year.
With Datsyuk, Zetterberg, Alfie, Franzen, Weiss, and Abby (you can't not play him with Dats at this point. His suspension proved his value) why is everyone so sure Cleary would be in the top 6? He is a role player. With the forwards the Wings have now, his role is grind, PK, and give the bottom 6 some secondary scoring. Sure he may get some 2nd unit PP time to get in the goalies face.
It isn't gys like Tatar or Nyquist who will lose roster spots with a Cleary signing. It is guys like Sammy, Tootoo and Eaves. Guys like Bert will have to fight for a spot. There will be injuries all season. Everyone will get their chance to play. Dunno if everyone has forgotten, but that is the exact reason why the Wings have made the run they did this year! Maybe people should see how the roster actually shapes up by the end of the summer before getting all bent out of shape now. Ever think that just MAYBE a trade or two will still happen?
Cleary is so bad at hockey it makes me question whether he is generally a bad person or not. He brings nothing to the table, he had a stretch of 4-5 games this whole year where he was worth a damn.
edit: I really hope the Avs sign him, I have a friend who is a huge Avs fan and always talks about how terrible he is. I mean Col does need leadership
I know I'll probably get flack for this but I'm okay with him re-signing Cleary if it's for a decent price. The guys a warrior and in spite of how people discount all his points, he was second only to Z in playoff scoring.
It just needs to be at good value, short term, and he should play fewer minutes.
re-signing Sammy on the other hand, I'm still ticked about. And now even if Holland wants to he may not be able to buy Sammy out because he's "injured."
True. It would've been what, something like $23 million tied up through 2021 AND having to re-sign Datsyuk?
It's a decent value for those guys now but the team loses so much flexibility for future moves.
IMO he had 1 good half playoff series in the last 2 years. Other then that, his favorite move is get the puck, pin it to the corner half way up the boards, and then let the dman take it away and throw it out of the zone.
