#2453827 Versteeg traded to Chicago

Posted by greenrebellion on 15 November 2013 - 10:01 AM

DId you guys think that maybe just maybe Holland can't participate in these deals because WE DON'T HAVE CAP ROOM.  We are over the cap when everyone is healthy, we are trying to shed salary not add salary.  And no, no one wants Tootoo so don't add him to a hypothetical deal.  He's cleared waivers, he has negative value.  And Sammy isn't going anywhere given his NTC.

Yup, lets let a great prospect rot on the bench and instead play an over the hill guy who has no future with the team.  Unbelievably ridiculous.

#2453511 An honest question about Nyquist

Posted by greenrebellion on 13 November 2013 - 09:02 PM

Holland said the solution must come from within.

“That’s it, that’s the team,’’ Holland said. “We’re not the first team in the league to have struggles. There is no hockey store. It’s got to be done internally.’’

Facepalm.... there are such things as OTHER TEAMS that you can trade with... Essentially Holland is saying the team we have is the team we are stuck with and that the players just aren't playing well but he constructed a great team that should win if the players did what he payed them to do.

I'd like to see the entire team healthy simply so it forces Holland to make a move for cap reasons.  Would be interesting to see what he does when his hand is forced.

That said, Holland's quote shouldn't come as a huge surprise to anyone.  He's made it clear numerous times that in the salary cap era he believes that hanging on to picks and young talent is paramount...especially if you want to be competitive year in and year out.

Q makes Smith look worse than he is.  Smith played quite well with Kronwall.  Quincey causes problems for everyone around him with his malarkey.

Interesting point, I'd be interested to see that D pairing split up which I believe is something that this forum has been harping on for sometime.

Quincey!

What is it about the Wings that makes Quincey suck so hard.

#2451566 Tootoo Waived

Something important to keep in mind...and I'm not saying this fully justifies what Holland has done, just keep the following in mind.

This whole loyalty to a fault thing may have behind the scenes benefits.  The way we treat our players is well known around the league and may benefit us in the following ways:

- Cheaper contract extensions (Kronwall, Datsyuk, etc.)

- Hossa/Alfreddson signings...yes they reached out to us but did our reputation help us out here?

- DeKeyser - did our rep help us attract this guy who could've signed with any club

- Brunner - see above, yes we didn't keep him, but again we attracted a high value target.

If you are going to bash Holland for loyalty (and I do think he's taken it too far) at least give him some credit for the positives that may arise from it.

Moulson with two goals tonight in his first game as a Sabre, looks like he can score without Tavares!

#2448417 Why Do They Trust The Youngsters?

Posted by greenrebellion on 27 October 2013 - 09:55 PM

I think it mostly comes down to familiarity.  Babs and Holland are familiar with the vets and what they bring to the team.  Additionally, the vets are familiar with the Wings' system, their role, and how the game is played at the NHL level.  Skill can get you to the NHL, but experience definitely goes a long way as well.  We see it with Tatar now.  Its clear he is teeming with skill, based on his AHL experience, as well as his play in the NHL.  At the same time, now that he's up here, he's also turning the puck over much more, getting closed on much quicker, and he is being read more carefully at this stage.  He's getting better at responding to that, actually at a pretty quick rate.  His first game this year IMO was terrible.  His second was much better.  His third average, and his most recent game I think was his best.  Generally he is trending up.  Smith his going through the same transition, albeit more slowly (as per tradition with Red Wing defensmen).

Anyway, playoffs are expected around these parts, and I have to imagine its more comforting for the Wings' brass to shoot for the playoffs with a roster full of players who have repeatedly accomplished this feat, and slowly infuse the aging roster with youth at a very controlled rate.  That's part of what made last year so exciting and nerve-wracking.  The Wings had no choice but to turn to several GR callups and nobody knew what to expect, but by the hair of their teeth they made it into the playoffs, and I think Babs' stellar coaching really helped the team take off and get to game seven of the second round before bowing out.

This is a good post, and I think the bolded part plays a very big role in how Holland/Babcock manage the roster.

Devastating, he's my favorite player behind Datsyuk.

I miss Larry Murphy

#2443514 10/12 GDT: Flyers 2 at Red Wings 5

This whole Tatar thing is really starting to get on my nerves.  He needs to play, he needs to develop, the Wings need goal scoring...put this guy on the first or second line ASAP.  What am I missing, why is something that seems so obvious to me so lost on management?

#2441311 Nyquist taking things in stride, with class

Posted by greenrebellion on 03 October 2013 - 10:44 AM

My major concern is that this permanently harms their development.  Nyquist is certainly proven he's ready for the challenge of the NHL and Tatar certainly isn't developing on the bench.

#2427288 is anyone happy right now?

Posted by greenrebellion on 05 July 2013 - 02:50 PM

Weiss is better and cheaper than Fil.

If Alfie replaces Cleary, upgrade!

If Alfie Replaces Abby who replaces Cleary Upgrade.

Tatar = Brunner (IMO, will eventually be better).

IMO, the Wings are better than they were at the beginning of game 7 against CHI!

Pretty much this, I'm very happy by the start of the free agency period and I expect a trade or two to be made by Holland before it is all said and done.

Jersey trades for LA's seventh so they can draft Brodeur's son.  Martin announced the pick...pretty cool.
