Something important to keep in mind...and I'm not saying this fully justifies what Holland has done, just keep the following in mind.

This whole loyalty to a fault thing may have behind the scenes benefits.  The way we treat our players is well known around the league and may benefit us in the following ways:

- Cheaper contract extensions (Kronwall, Datsyuk, etc.)

- Hossa/Alfreddson signings...yes they reached out to us but did our reputation help us out here?

- DeKeyser - did our rep help us attract this guy who could've signed with any club

- Brunner - see above, yes we didn't keep him, but again we attracted a high value target.

If you are going to bash Holland for loyalty (and I do think he's taken it too far) at least give him some credit for the positives that may arise from it.

Moulson with two goals tonight in his first game as a Sabre, looks like he can score without Tavares!

#2448417 Why Do They Trust The Youngsters?

Posted by greenrebellion on 27 October 2013 - 09:55 PM

I think it mostly comes down to familiarity.  Babs and Holland are familiar with the vets and what they bring to the team.  Additionally, the vets are familiar with the Wings' system, their role, and how the game is played at the NHL level.  Skill can get you to the NHL, but experience definitely goes a long way as well.  We see it with Tatar now.  Its clear he is teeming with skill, based on his AHL experience, as well as his play in the NHL.  At the same time, now that he's up here, he's also turning the puck over much more, getting closed on much quicker, and he is being read more carefully at this stage.  He's getting better at responding to that, actually at a pretty quick rate.  His first game this year IMO was terrible.  His second was much better.  His third average, and his most recent game I think was his best.  Generally he is trending up.  Smith his going through the same transition, albeit more slowly (as per tradition with Red Wing defensmen).

Anyway, playoffs are expected around these parts, and I have to imagine its more comforting for the Wings' brass to shoot for the playoffs with a roster full of players who have repeatedly accomplished this feat, and slowly infuse the aging roster with youth at a very controlled rate.  That's part of what made last year so exciting and nerve-wracking.  The Wings had no choice but to turn to several GR callups and nobody knew what to expect, but by the hair of their teeth they made it into the playoffs, and I think Babs' stellar coaching really helped the team take off and get to game seven of the second round before bowing out.

This is a good post, and I think the bolded part plays a very big role in how Holland/Babcock manage the roster.

Devastating, he's my favorite player behind Datsyuk.

I miss Larry Murphy

This whole Tatar thing is really starting to get on my nerves.  He needs to play, he needs to develop, the Wings need goal scoring...put this guy on the first or second line ASAP.  What am I missing, why is something that seems so obvious to me so lost on management?

#2441311 Nyquist taking things in stride, with class

My major concern is that this permanently harms their development.  Nyquist is certainly proven he's ready for the challenge of the NHL and Tatar certainly isn't developing on the bench.

#2427288 is anyone happy right now?

Posted by greenrebellion on 05 July 2013 - 02:50 PM

Weiss is better and cheaper than Fil.

If Alfie replaces Cleary, upgrade!

If Alfie Replaces Abby who replaces Cleary Upgrade.

Tatar = Brunner (IMO, will eventually be better).

IMO, the Wings are better than they were at the beginning of game 7 against CHI!

Pretty much this, I'm very happy by the start of the free agency period and I expect a trade or two to be made by Holland before it is all said and done.

Jersey trades for LA's seventh so they can draft Brodeur's son.  Martin announced the pick...pretty cool.

#2380143 Concerned - we might not make it in to the playoffs

Look at the bright side, every game matters!

For most of the past 20 years I've taken the regular season for granted, but this year pretty much every game feels like a playoff game.  Enjoy the ride...

Agreed. These premadonnas are a diamond dozen. It's a doggy dog world out there so these kids shouldn't be taking stuff like this for granite.

Diamond dozen?
Doggy dog world?

Go Kings Go.

And I'm rooting against Pittsburgh.

Honestly, I'd like to see him retire. I have fantastic memories of Lidstrom's career and I want to remember him near his best rather than watch him slowly turn human.

I'm all for playing Dallas, but rooting for sixth seed could backfire if San Jose wins the Pacific!

A Wings win is always good, but a Wings win that contributes to keeping San Jose out of the playoffs? Priceless...

Win in regulation boys.
