#2606372 DRW Free Agents / Salary Thread

Oh, football. He's not doing well? I thought he was the second coming of Scott Mitchell or something.

I know it doesn't matter, but I really wish my road jerseys were still home jerseys.

What a senseless change.

I like it, white is generic, let the away team be the generic team and home team show their colors.

f*** off.

Sounds like something Crosby would say.

Well, I guess we can cancel the APB on Stamkos.

I think it was less Stamkos sucking and more the Wings being awesome.

I'm not saying that a goalie from way back when would be okay with taking a Weber shot to the head. It was an example of the difference between then and now. Hell, I'm a pansy when it comes to getting hit with a puck, but I'm not in the NHL. Guys now are faster and have sticks engineered to produce faster and harder shots, so the mask thing was just pointing out that they used to go without them. You didn't have the diving and embellishing that you do now. I hate to bring Crosby into this, but there's a video on Youtube showing his dives and his childish attitude. This is the new "face of the NHL". As for Kurri, he's touting the KHL more than calling out the NHL.

I don't know, did they really not have it? I wasn't around then but I've talked to people who were and even read some things that suggested that there were a lot of players back in the day who were less than ethical, as it were.

It's easy to think of those times as the glory years because we are so far removed that we only know them from the exceptional moments that still get talked about. The majority of games weren't televised, there's limited footage and almost no way to interpret what does exist.

I mean, even our golden boy Stevie Y had a Crosby like reputation for a while. I could even buy that there was less whining, but we know the cheap shots were worse! They were brutal, Redmond always talks about Gordie's famous elbows!

Again, I wasn't there, so this is just a mildly educated guess, but I would bet embellishment happened frequently, (I mean, it's not like these people are known for being the bastions of morality) and if it didn't, it seems logical that it had more to do with how the officiating handled diving. It's likely that if fewer penalties were called, there would be no benefit to embellish.

That's my issue with the games that I see, (which unfortunately aren't many) players are being rewarded for diving by the resulting penalties to the opposing teams. It's in their best interest!

The league needs to put their collective thinking caps on and find the best way to solve these problems.

( for the record, I think the league does a great job overall, with the increase in speed and skill comes an equal increase in the challenge to maintain a fair balance of officiating on the ice.)

I totally agree that there's a lot of inconsistency in how the game is officiated, but we can't ignore that the players are getting stronger, faster and more skilled. That above all else is the cause of change we see in the NHL.

They did put restrictions on goalie equipment size, while still keeping them protected. Remember, not a single goalie would've been ok being maskless with Weber shots flying by eye level at 100 mph.

I don't hate Chicago, they just have two recent cups and I don't want them to become a dynasty.

#2605409 At What Point Does Holland Deserve Blame?

Posted by Mckinley25 on 01 May 2015 - 02:30 PM

Unless he had cancer, it's not much of an excuse.  He had 3 goals and 9 assists in 37 games over three post seasons.

Zetterberg had 9 goals and 2 assists in 22 games over three post seasons.

And BOTH of them were playing on a a team chocked full of hall of fame talent.

If people are going to talk about Nyquist and Tatar's "struggles", or talk about how they have to be surrounded by stars to look good, they need only look at Dats and Z's careers as evidence of exactly what that means for long term projections.

There is a tendency among some Wings fans to act like Dats and Zetterberg were superstars the minute the came into the league, and that everybody knew all along that they'd be great.  But it isn't true.  When they came into the league they looked like Tatar and Nyquist do now...except maybe not quite as good.

In fact LGW used to tear Datsyuk a new one every post season because of his play.

Hmm I'd like to look that up but you might be right.

I think we have failed miserably at free agency though, too.

So it's not just low picks. Though I see your point.

Free agency has been a completely different game since the cap as well, the contracts are longer so there's less options during the off season, and more competition for players. We don't have young superstars to lure in free agents, there's lots of other exciting teams to choose from.

I don't know that I can say with certainty that Holland is the best GM, but I think he's done very well considering the circumstances.

Posted by Mckinley25 on 25 April 2015 - 12:22 PM

Oh, if you've watched the Wings all season, then you have *definitely* witnessed a group of men tripping over both their collective dick as well as their individual dicks. It's not as metaphorical as it sounds.

NO MORE.

If it's not metaphorical, I'm suddenly feeling very inadequate. #notatriphazard

Sure why not, just let other guys punch our stars and smaller guys in the head and then run to the league crying for a suspension. Instead of handling that stuff like men and call the on ice police and fire the team up.

Actually, that would be handling it like children, who don't know any better.

I figured this thread would be busier with the Pens on the brink.

I don't want the Pens to win the series but I hope it lasts longer than 5 games.

You can call the Datsyuk goal a lucky bounce if you want, but he passed the puck and headed for the net, that's how it's supposed to work, you get bounces in your favor when you do that.
