#2670838 Playoff Bracket - Round 1

Posted by toby91_ca on 18 April 2016 - 09:20 PM

No, doesn't make it interesting all, makes it ridiculous.  Why give a weaker team a better chance because two stronger teams go against each other and have one knocked out early?

To change the discussion a bit, I thought Drouin was pretty decent...total surprise based on how the year has gone..surprise he's even with the team.

#2662812 2016 Playoffs % chances (part II)

The good news is that the Wings' schedule looks pretty easy the next 3 games, more challenging the last 3, but it's still against lower seeded teams other than the Rangers.  You also want to be playing against the teams you are competing against for the playoffs towards the end (BOS and PHI)

One could argue Mrazek is also a reason they are slipping.  He's given up 5 goals 3 times in the last 11 games....in his first 38 games that didn't happen a single time.

Of course, I'm no naïve enough to think that's all on Mrazek, it's a function of team play as well.

Regarding Sproul...I don't think a draft position of 55th can really result in a bust...there really isn't much expectation when drafting at that level.

#2657444 Jagr ties Howe

Posted by toby91_ca on 04 March 2016 - 12:27 PM

So, Jagr picked up a point last night to pull into a tie with Howe at 1,850 points, becoming only the 4th player in history to reach that level, along with Gretzky, Messier and Howe.  I want to say he's done it quietly, but he's had all sorts of accolades, but I can't help but think he's never been thought of as one of the all-time greats, like the other 3....perhaps underrated?

Anyway, funny part, how old were each when they scored their 1,850th point?

Howe - 52 (but he was out of the NHL for a long while before coming back....so it really would have been 43)

Jagr - 44 (but he was out of the NHL for a few years, so really would have been 41 perhaps)

Messier - 42

Gretzky - 28 :scared:

#2654486 Has anyone been to a game in Buffalo?

Barrie....we probably are neighbors, I live in Burlington as well.

#2654409 Has anyone been to a game in Buffalo?

Posted by toby91_ca on 22 February 2016 - 01:58 PM

I went to my first game in Buffalo yesterday.  Not sure why I haven't before (I live in west end Greater Toronto Area), so it's actually pretty close for me and I've flown out of that airport to Orlando the few times we've gone to Disney.  It's not closer than going to Toronto of course, but it's much cheaper.  The only headache can be the boarder line up, but it was okay.

Anyway, the funny thing is, the game was PIT vs BUF and they sang the Canadian anthem.  I didn't think about this until about halfway through when I realized there wasn't a Canadian team playing.  I'm guessing they do this because there are so many people that come from Ontario for their games (I'm guessing about 1/2 the crowd).  I've been to several games in other US cities and they'd only play the Canadian anthem if a Canadian team was playing (same for games in Canada, only US anthem if a US team is playing).

Has anyone seen this anywhere else?  Detroit is a convenient trip as well for people in South Western Ontario, but there wouldn't be the same volume of Ontarians at Wings' games as there are in Buffalo I'd guess.

EDIT: I forgot the main reason for my post....thought this was weird....a few rows in front of me (very close to the glass as my seats were pretty good) someone had a sign that read: "If Crosby scores, Datsyuk gets a puppy" - I mean, even if it was PIT vs DET, the sign still wouldn't have made sense to me.

#2654402 Datsyuk Now 7th in All-Time Wings Goals

Posted by toby91_ca on 22 February 2016 - 01:35 PM

I was looking at overall career as of now and I agree that PPG should decrease as you age, but I figured it was close to a fair comparison as you can get since Datsyuk would have benefited more from higher scoring years from a league perspective combined with Toews theoretically not getting benefit from his prime years yet.

As I said before though...I do think Toews gets far more credit than he should, but only because he seems to be rated so high by many.  The only hesitation I have is that the players seem to give him quite a bit of respect as well (e.g. Crosby having to call him before accepting Team Canada Captaincy).  To me, he's more like a Bergeron type player (which is a very good player of course, but not the best in the world).

#2650876 Bettman signed through 2022

Posted by toby91_ca on 01 February 2016 - 11:03 AM

The more I think about it, I really don't have any major beefs with Bettman.  Surprising a bit, but I think he's done a pretty good job with the league when you consider what his job entails. -

He's an easy target and easy to hate for various reasons:

 - he's the commish of a pro sports league, that always comes with some dislike, part of the role

 - his delivery / speaking does not come off very well sometimes, or a lot of times.  He annoys me for sure, but not sure about dislike as I don't know too much about him beyond what you see in the public (never met him).  I must say though, sometimes, very good speakers and people with charisma aren't always what they seem so...

 - lockouts - again, easy to point the finger at him hear and dislike him, but I've tended to step back and think that those are really issues between the players and the owners....take a side there if you want, but he's just the guy doing his best for his employers (owners)

 - not a "hockey guy" - there will always be people that simply will never give him a chance because he didn't grow up playing and loving the game (I assume he didn't).  I share some of that as well, but I think people are a bit too hard on him for that and in reality, it doesn't matter in terms of the job he needs to do.

Anyway, he's just the easy scapegoat most of the time with anything gone wrong (John Scott incident as well) - not sure how much Bettman had to do with some of the ugly stuff though, so pointing the finger at him may be misinformed as well.  When it comes to the game itself, how it's played, any rule changes, etc., Bettman is really just one person involved in all of that and he doesn't necessarily carry a ton of weight in those decisions.

#2647823 Pav hits 1000

Posted by toby91_ca on 14 January 2016 - 08:25 AM

Well that's probably the first time I ever saw someone point out a milestone that adds regular season and playoffs.

When I saw the title of the thread I was thinking.....there's no way he's at 1,000 pts yet (I thought he was approaching 900)....so then I was thinking it might be a question as to what we think his chances are of getting to 1,000.

#2647354 Red Wings at the Halfway Point

Posted by toby91_ca on 11 January 2016 - 02:24 PM

Overall results wise, I'm pleased, but it is a bit concerning that the scoring leader on the team only has 30 points 42 games in.  It would be less concerning if there were 5 or 6 guys in that range and it's just a balanced scoring approach, but that's not the case.  I'm not worried about Datsyuk yet as he's coming off an injury, but he will be 38 soon as well, so I can't assume he'll just get better and better.

Back to results though, the fact that they are not scoring a lot, but still able to pull off wins and have a decent record is promising and the type of play that will be helpful come playoff time.  A team that wins a lot during the regular season and has a huge +/- differential isn't always prepared for playoff hockey as the games will be closer.  My glass half full way of looking at it.

#2646482 The Elite Dylan Larkin

Posted by toby91_ca on 07 January 2016 - 12:43 PM

I must admit that I was surprised Crosby was left off the roster, it makes no sense to me.  He's he had an absolute horrible start to the season...but that's also by his standards, his offensive stats are still better than almost half the forwards on the roster (10 of 24).  The all star games if for the kids and for your corporate sponsors, you want to showcase your stars...it's mind boggling that he wouldn't be selected unless there have been behind the scenes requests to leave him off due to nagging injury (playing through but doesn't want to end up in situation he and other players have been before with the AS game).

Crazy to think though, he's actually only played in 1 all star game.  He would have been there based on performance every year, but missed 5 due to injury, 3 due to Olympics and 2 due to lockout.

#2646364 The Elite Dylan Larkin

Posted by toby91_ca on 06 January 2016 - 01:52 PM

Bill, didn't you suggest that his stats are as good as anyone in the league, or something like that?  How is 27pts comparable to 59pts?  There is nothing elite about 27pts in 39 games.  Arguing whether he's the best of the team right now is one thing and possible, but that doesn't make him elite.

I agree with others though, it's all in perception of the term.  In my mind, there are very few elite players in the league, if there are a lot, then how could you really call them elite? Some teams have 1, some have more than 1 and some have none.

#2646219 Naming The New Arena Suggestion

Posted by toby91_ca on 05 January 2016 - 03:25 PM

It's not idiotic Canadian spelling, it's Center in the US and Centre pretty much in every other English speaking country.  Similar to the use of imperial system vs metric, US appears to be the odd balls :)
