  2. I know I don't mean this, and I'm going to regret it the moment I hit "post", but sometimes I wish we had Toronto media in the room to ask point blank, even purposefully incendiary questions of the coach like "Coach, AA seemed to have a lot of energy out there, create scoring chances, and carry play, what was behind your decision to play Tatar/Nyquist/Richard more while he rode the bench?"
  3. A total punch in the gut, for sure....
  4. One of Nyquist or Tatar should be gone by next year. This team does not need either of those two soft bums, let alone both. Trade them while you can still get decent return, after next season they'll be exposed to all, if they haven't been already. Blashill was a complete disappointment in his first year coaching. How does someone watch game after game at ice-level, and still give Tatar Nyquist & Richards that much time while AA cools his heels on the bench? Unbelievable misuse of young talent; totally not as advertised. Ken Holland needs to do some serious soul-searching, realize that doing the same thing for the past 8 years has wasted great careers and driven us to complete mediocrity. If he is as incapable of adaptation as he has proven to be, we need to find someone who is worthy of the seat. Its made all the worse by watching Yzerman and Nill head for greener pastures while Kenny squats in the Wings GM chair and rests on his laurels.
  5. Goodbye, Pasha :'( Sorry we wasted the best years of your career on Todd Bertuzzi and Dan Cleary.

Oh good..... a powerplay. Fitting we should end the season on the futile powerplay that sunk us.

Its disheartening to watch this team perform as poorly as they are. I don't buy that we are still adjusting to Blashill's system, or that injuries and slumps are causing a momentary dip in production. This team seems too talented to produce at these meager rates. Unfortunately, it appears that the young guys who are supposed to be taking the reins - Tatar, Nyquist, and Sheahan in particular - have reached their ceiling and are not the heirs to Datsyuk and Zetterberg they were originally hoped to be. They are tweeners, more in the mold of Franzen. I'm hoping they power through and prove me wrong in the months and years to come, but right now it appears to be a clear case of a fumble in passing the torch. Zetterberg and Datsyuk are on the back nine and their replacements aren't fit to tie their skates.

    Smith-Kronwall

Haha this reminds me of when we were struggling to make the playoffs in the last few games of the season and he reached out from the bench and knocked down a live puck late in a game to give us a bench penalty. When he was scratched the next game or two and he was interviewed, he shared some delusion about "coach resting veterans before the playoffs", nothing to do with his brain fart almost costing the team the season. Haha this kid is a riot!

It really has been a chore to watch the Red Wings play this season. As others have said ad nauseam, we can't handle the puck or complete a pass the majority of the time. It rolls, it hops a stick blade, its too fast, its too slow, it surprises the receiving player, its too far in front, its too far behind, etc. etc. The team for the most part looks lost. For me there are three major causes: our back-end is absolute garbage, our set plays are predictable and leave little margin for error, and our forward lines change by the shift. All of these are problems this team has had to some degree for the last several seasons, but the third has been a constant source of frustration I feel is seldom mentioned. Hockey is a game of chemistry and timing. You need to have an understanding of linemates' tenancies, speed, role, and skillset. Comfort with linemates can sometimes take time, and when a team is slumping as a whole, all the more. Few things are more infuriating than to see our guys practice with particular line combinations for a few days, get into a game situation, and after a bad first 10 minutes, we shuffle everyone hoping for a spark. Am I the only one who finds this practice absolutely absurd? Lines need time to gel, and teammates need to work themselves out of their slumps together. Shuffling lines at the rate Blashill has been doing, and Babcock used to do, would seem to throw off timing from shift to shift and frustrate players to no end. Its all the more infuriating to watch us break up the lines that are producing to lift underperforming players. Why can't we complete a pass? Our centermen are playing with upwards of 6 different wingers every game. I have to imagine its all the worse trying to break out of a rut when you are constantly hitting the reset button on your chemistry and having to adjust your attack, all while your defense is allowing the opposition to gain momentum on the other side of the ice.

I'm glad to see Larkin back with Z. They have been our most (read: only) consistently positive players thus far this season, and more so when they've been together. Let them do their thing and control play. I'm obviously not an NHL coach, but as a fan I've never subscribed to the method of breaking up linemates that are rolling to pick up the play of their under-performing teammates. Good players when given enough time will and should learn to play through their slumps, especially when its players with a past history of success together (i.e. Tatar and Nyquist). Shuffling lines too frequently tends to do more harm than good. Let the players that are carrying the play continue to build on their momentum. Allow those players in a rut to work their way out of it together and rebuild that chemistry for the long-term good. Don't hide their inadequate play behind the few players that are providing both effort and results. All that does is disrupt things and mask underlying issues. Babcock did that far too much, and so has Blashill thus far.

Cleary NOT reporting to Grand Rapids

Should have paid him $950,000 to work concessions or shovel sidewalks at the Joe. It couldn't be any more of a cap circumvention, and at least you'd get something out of the deal.

Wings sign Brad Richards 1 yr, $3 million

When I first heard the Wings were approaching Brad Richards, I was repulsed. When I heard one-year term, I actually got a bit excited. It is very unlikely the Wings will want to rush Larkin unless they absolutely have to. We are down our best center until November with Pavel out. Helm is preferred on the wing and could use a serviceable 3rd liner while Larkin seasons another year in the A. We have some money to spend as long as its only for this season. This would also all-but guarantee Cleary is out. I still think we need to trade a defensemen or two for picks/prospects, but Richards for one year in a limited role would be a marked improvement at center. Also hoping Andersson was signed to sweeten the pot when moving some of our extra D.
