#2302797 Congratulations to the LA Kings

Kind of funny that there could be a coaching rematch of the '04 Finals, albeit with different teams.

#2302379 A general, how I would build a team

Posted by Wings_Toledo on 21 May 2012 - 06:37 AM

How do you build a successful NHL team you ask? It's simple. I don't get why people think Ken Holland's so smart??

1mil, 1mil

...THAT's how you structure a 70 million dollar salary cap in today's NHL. There are 11 players that you give about 5mil to (and three of them you could give 6mil to) - your top six forwards, your top four defensemen and your goalie. I don't care if you draft and develop them, if you trade for them, or if you sign them. You get them. That's where you need your elite talent.

...As for the rest of the guys, your bottom six forwards, your bottom pairing defenseman, your backup goalie, and your healthy scratches. None of these guys should be making more than 1mil a season. Most of them should be cheap, young, big, strong, fast, tough, hard-working ready-to-play draft picks that you make. They don't need to be able to score. They just need to be those things. And you can find those things anywhere in the draft if you're looking for them. If one of the guy's blows up and is in line for a big contract...you let him walk...and you call up the next guy.

Simple as that.

I'm shocked that no one has picked up on the sarcasm of this post.

#2302378 2012 World Ice Hockey Championships

Hate him or love him - Semin fit like a glove on Pavs wing. If his pricetag is low enough (4.5) and the terms short I wouldnt be upset to see him on the Wings next year. Weve taken on projects/reclaimation projects before ... and hes probably the youngest and most talented renaissance man Hollands ever given a career 2nd life to.

That sounds like a good deal, but I just have to imagine that he only played so well because he knew that the tournament is short and European players have that reputation of caring more about International play than winning a Cup.

I could be wrong and he might do well in a better run organization, but I just wouldn't get my hopes up based on one solid outing in a World Championship.

If I had a nickel for every new thread started about how to build this team or who we should add in the offseason, I'd be able to buy the Phoenix Coyotes.

#2300094 Suter most likely out of Nashville

Posted by Wings_Toledo on 08 May 2012 - 01:30 PM

A few thing....parise is not gritty. he is also a 60 point guy, not a 80+ point guy. he is a sniper only with very average play making abilities. he is also only 5-11/190. same as most of our forwards. they need people to create space for them in the playoffs, and Parise is not going to do that. Not to mention suck up a lot of money.

Parise is also great along the boards, goes to the net and has a fantastic shot. Yeah, we don't need someone like that...

Matt Carkner will most likely hit free agency as well and would be a decent pickup for D. He would definitely address the toughness need and can actually play decent minutes in case Quincey can't turn his game around. Adding a cheap "tough guy" on D would allow Holland to go with speed on the bottom six and avoid signing a 4th-liner that would only play 4-5 minutes a game. Getting Parise has to be the top priority, though. The series with Nashville proved that this team doesn't have one guy outside of Zetterberg that can be relied on for goals.

#2294011 WCQF Game 5 GDT : Red Wings 1 at Predators 2

Posted by Wings_Toledo on 20 April 2012 - 07:54 PM

It's seriously embarrassing watching this team this year. They don't even look like they're in the same league as Nashville and the defense has been absolutely terrible. The offense is still doing the same things that haven't worked all series long. At this point I just have no idea what happened to the Wings...

#2280155 #6 Chicago Blackhawks vs. #3 Phoenix Coyotes

Posted by Wings_Toledo on 08 April 2012 - 06:27 AM

Phoenix in 5 or 6. Phoenix went 3-1 against Chicago in the regular season and have the offense and goaltending to beat them in the playoffs. We'll see, but for the first time ever I'm rooting for the 'Yotes.

#2276582 4/1 GDT : Panthers 1 at Red Wings 2 (SO)

Franzen seems basically worthless at this point. I know he's been out for a little bit and needs a few games to get back into shape but his lack of effort and terrible decision-making in the offensive zone are getting old...

Holmstrom and Nyquist are the hardest working players on the team right now.

#2274016 Patrick Eaves

I haven't heard anything either, but it doesn't look good for him. It's a shame because he's a guy who the Wings could really use for the playoffs.

#2271520 Alex Radulov returning nhl playoffs?

Posted by Wings_Toledo on 19 March 2012 - 11:56 AM

Well, he was pretty much the most dominant player in the KHL last season and won a Gagarin Cup with Salavat, so maybe he just wants a shot at the Stanley Cup as well? I know he looks terrible going about it in this way, but his KHL club has been eliminated so instead of just taking the money and resting in the off-season he now wants to enter the playoffs with his NHL team. To me that says that he's a competitor and wants to win so I don't get all the hate.

#2271481 Crosby

Posted by Wings_Toledo on 19 March 2012 - 06:20 AM

I hate to admit it, but yeah he's the best player in the league. It's just his on-ice attitude that makes him unlikeable by non-Pens fans. Hopefully after missing so much time from concussion issues he'll learn to tone down the temper tantrums and just go out and play. I doubt he wants to bring about the wrath of some goon that just wants to take his head off.

#2270868 $35 All YOu Can Drink in Tampa

Posted by Wings_Toledo on 17 March 2012 - 10:41 AM

Oh good. Just what sporting events need - more drunks. Letting people drink themselves into alcoholic stupors is totally responsible, and not at all going to affect the quality of the game for those unfortunate enough to be seated near these people.

Since the tent is outside I would assume that most of the folks coming for the beer special aren't necessarily attending the game. Either way, at least it will bring people to a hockey game in Florida.

#2269234 CBC Hot Stove: Cap to go up to 69 mill or 72mill

Posted by Wings_Toledo on 11 March 2012 - 09:47 AM

I just shake my head thinking about how the NHL lost an entire season to keep salaries in check. Now the Cap is going from 39 mil to 72 mil in a span of 7 years.

Exactly. It's obvious that the hard cap is not working. Sure, there is more parity among the league, but these inflated contracts are getting out of hand. A soft cap with a luxury tax is by far the best alternative to just completely removing the cap altogether (of which I am in favor).
