Even as we sit we aren't a non-playoff team and i'm confident in that. Thrash me all you want if the playoffs roll around and we fall short, but I think all the disappointment this offseason is sparking a bit of panicky delusions that we are now a bad team. Only thing that would have changed if we had Semin is Franzen would have gotten some of the heat taking off of him from being lazy and we would now have a new whipping boy to replace Hudler. I hate to say "I Guarantee" but I bet at the end of next season some people around here will be breathing a sigh of relief that we didn't piss away 7 million on Semin.
We don't need Smith, Brunner, and Nyquist to all be superstars, they just need to get the job done, and I think they will. Nothing wrong with being optimistic in our youth for once and not take the spoiled path of signing a superstar to replace one that just retired all the time. This isn't pre-cap hockey anymore.
Optimism is one thing. Homerism is another. We need a #1 dman and 2 wingers who can bury it. All preferably right handed. Problem now is that they have to come thru trade. And that means we only make monor improvements when we need major ones. Unless Brunner and Nyquist turn out to be Shanahan and Larionov & Smith turns out to be Fetisov , we are gonna watch a lot of losses this year.

We have a few members from Europe that post here so I think you will fit in and it's great that you have been so personally involved with Hockey yourself. I'll repeat Neil here and add Clutterbuck to the list. I'm also a pretty big fan of Patrick Sharp.
Non-hockey would be Ryan Howard, Matt Kemp, and Brandon Phillips even though i'm a Braves fan.

It's time to have faith in our youth and brush off a bit of the "guaranteed success" mentality. It's going to be an interesting season to say the least, it's the first time I can remember going into a season wondering if we are actually gonna make the playoffs. I'm not ripping on the team in the slightest, but there has been some drastic change this offseason and the team is a bit foreign going into October. I really don't know what to expect, I HOPE Smith is another Karlsson story and just explodes this season but i'm not banking on it. We didn't expect Flip to have the season he just had and i'm looking forward to being surprised again and seeing who steps up and gets it done for us.
It's been sticking in my head since the Wild signed those who shall not be named (and I don't mean Voldemort) that what if we did sign them both to those huge contracts, Smith proves to be an elite defensemen over the next couple years and we can't afford to resign him because we locked ourselves up with those massive contracts? Sometimes things happen for a reason, and if we can't add any big name players then i'm sticking to this logic so I don't go nuts.

Agreed with the comments, Neil is one of my favorite non-wings as well, and i've posted many times that i'd love to see him here someday. Ottawa is smart for locking him up, he is an asset to their developing system.
Him and Clutterbuck have been helping me own the hits category in my fantasy league for the past few years also, had to toss that in there.
This I did not know.

I'm not in any kind of panic or concern about this team going forward, maybe it's because I have very high hopes for Smith or maybe it's because Flip proved last season that he can be that scoring player we were hoping he would be. This team wins, and I don't think this upcoming season is going to be any different. It may not be the top seed we are used to but I don't think we are doomed to fail either.

Lol.. Might win the Presidents trophy and the cup next year eh? Yes, I can see it now. Lose Lidstrom and Stuart and add nobody on the back end. Damien Brunner is the biggest signing of the year... So I have only one thing to say to that. In the words of Emilio Estevez when he played Billy the Kid in Young Guns.. "I wouldn't give a bucket of piss for your future."
P.S. Holland better get on his horse and start making some improvements on this roster or you guys are going to be Royally Fuc*ked

Subban is YOUNG. He is immature and needs to grow up, but entirely too fresh in his NHL career to label him as a locker room cancer. Patrick Kane is a twerp but even he's starting to somewhat come around and act like a professional. I stress "starting to" before the comments start pouring in.
Fact is the kid is skilled, plays a rough game, and could be terrifying on a line with Kronwall for opposing teams to play against. I think a lot of highlights that showed him this past season were showing the negative and it really doesn't reflect his overall potential. You can't really judge any player on Montreal considering the fiasco of a season they just went through, that team is a disaster and being a rookie going into a situation like that can't be positive.
Rumor, faked tweeting, whatever it is, i'm in favor of Subban as a long term option on our D line.
