#2466022 Blues Re-sign Steen 3 Years 17.4m

Posted by MabusIncarnate on 18 December 2013 - 05:19 PM

Way too much money for Steen imo. He's a solid player but he's playing out of his mind right now, and I find it hard to believe he can even come close to a repeat season like the one he is having. He's worthy of $3.5 - $4.0 max but close to 6 mil per is nuts.

Clarkson is a perfect example, had an out of character season last year, got overpaid, and he's back to being his mediocre self with 6 points in 24 games and coming off his 2nd suspension this season already.

It's a Christmas miracle!! There is zero reason why he hasn't played a game yet this season, but better late than never.

I'm pretty sure withholding pay for lack of production is breach of contract and illegal, so that's a non-option. I also don't think the Detroit Red Wings have a long standing tradition of following the Montreal Canadian way so i'm not entirely sure what the relation or reference to that means.

Players aren't programmed to be suddenly called up and be NHL ready, that's why there is an NHL level and an AHL level. AHL players are not supposed to be NHL ready, that's why they are in the AHL to develop. It's also why a healthy AHL team would get destroyed by an NHL team. It isn't a level playing field, you have young, inexperienced players being put into first-time NHL scenarios and the expectation of them to suddenly start being productive and keep the team at a top notch level isn't realistic.

If you run a factory with 20 employees and 8 veterans are replaced by 8 new hires the overall production won't maintain it's normal pace, it will drop until all the new guys get a hang of things and learn how things work. Its a similar situation.

#2465916 Can Detroit turn things around?

Posted by MabusIncarnate on 18 December 2013 - 01:47 AM

My mind goes to a poster on Fox Mulder's office on the X-Files that had a UFO on it and said "I Want To Believe". That's about how I feel at this moment, I want to think this is still a competitive and skilled team, and they will make the playoffs again this season and make some kind of run toward the finals. The fan in me, the optimist and support I have for this team, i'll always consider them top level and competitive.

Realistically right now it's not fair to judge the current state of this team when so many players are void from it. This is not the team that has been built, this is a low point with entirely too many key players not in the lineup. We have kids that have barely played any NHL games and 3rd-4th line players thrown into 1st and 2nd line responsibility. There's not much chemistry yet as they haven't had time to play with all of these new players.

Can we turn things around? Of course when we have more players back in the lineup and our starting goaltender back. Will we do it this month? Not likely, and having expectations of this being a winning team right now is a bit nuts.

So as we sit, we are going to struggle, and we'll continue to struggle. Come January we'll be back in a bit of an uphill battle until we can finally get healthy again (hopefully) and start to win games again. This being a healthy team is a skilled and potentially competitive team, but don't judge the state of the Wings as they currently sit.

Glendening, Jurco, Andersson, and Sheahan all get hat tricks, the Red Griffs blow up offensively and put up 97 shots and win 17-0. Datsyuk breaks the NHL record for assists and points with 1 goal 14 assists and 15 points. Cleary and Sammy combine for 1 assist.  Hiller turns his crease yellow and Getzlaf cries.

Here we go good vibes here we go!

GO RED WINGS!!!!!

#2465282 Can't remember the last time we were this pathetic

Posted by MabusIncarnate on 16 December 2013 - 03:56 PM

When we have Zetterberg, Helm, Weiss, DeKeyser, Howard, Franzen, Abdelkader back in the lineup, in addition to the other players who have missed significant time due to injury like Ericsson, Datsyuk and Bertuzzi, and we still aren't scoring and are losing consistently, then I will get concerned.

This in a festive holiday nut shell.

There's a lot of unreal expectations of how this team should play while plagued with so many injuries. It's no different than say the Blackhawks being down Toews, Sharp, Bickell, Seabrook, Crawford, Shaw, and Handzus with Kane just returning a couple games ago after being out with a concussion. You can't honestly expect them to continue to play like a top NHL squad with all of those guys missing from the lineup.

If you are taking away that many key players from a team, have 3rd/4th line players on the top two lines, it's going to be a struggle. You need your core to win games. It sucks that right now we are on a 4 game losing skid, but it's not time to panic or jump ship. Wait until the end of the month when we get a few big names back in the line up and see how things go then. The season is 82 games long for a reason, and we're barely at the halfway point and still sitting in a playoff position even with the recent woes.

#2464062 Kindl

Posted by MabusIncarnate on 13 December 2013 - 02:02 PM

This goes on every year, there's a few players pointed out as the "problem" and it's never considered as a team sport like it should be. For a game we just lost that was 1-1 going into a shootout, a defensemen is picked out as today's subject of concern. It's kind of strange considering 1 goal was allowed that the defense is what is brought up and not the offense as a whole.

There has been 5 goals allowed total in the last 3 games, all 3 games which were losses. In games where you are only allowing 1 or 2 goals against should be wins most of the time, and when they aren't the goaltender isn't being supported enough offensively. There lies the problem and what I think should be the focus, the offense or lack there of the past few games that should have been wins. Not Cleary and Sammy who are 4th liners, because the reliance and expectations of them offensively getting 4th line minutes as the hate continues to grow is getting a bit silly. I'm talking the guys who get the minutes, like Alfredsson, Bertuzzi, Abdelkader, to step up and net these goals because their job on the 1st and 2nd line is to put up offense. We can't rely on Datsyuk and sometimes Franzen to do it all.

This week, for me, i'm seeing a lot of Quincey hate, and now Kindl, and I really have trouble jumping on this wagon considering the goals against in recent games. If we gave up 10-15 goals in the last 3 games, sure it's a problem with the defense. But allowing as few as 1-2 per game and still losing, i'm directing my discouragement elsewhere.

To sum it up and bring out my point, Kindl and his play here recently is at the lower end of my list of concerns.

If this was another half season i'd be more concerned. Knowing how many games still remain, that our point total so far this season all problems aside is surprisingly good, and that Zett will return, i'm not giving up hope that this squad can still contend and make playoffs. Even if Howard continues to struggle who can argue that Monster isn't a viable option until Jimmy picks it back up?

#2463953 The person below me game...

I have! I smoked for 12 years and this past April I quit cold turkey and haven't had a cigarette since.

The person below me is sick of shootouts.

Seriously, a moment of thanks for Monster and his turnaround this year. Last season there was never this kind of faith in him and Howard got overworked. With Gustavsson's play this season, even bringing this team to OT and securing a point in a couple losses, I greatly appreciate him and his efforts. We might be in a much worse position in the standings without him.

Shootouts are getting old, not going to argue about how stupid of a concept it is to begin with but the Wings are obviously ineffective during it this season and something needs to run better going forward. Thankfully... there is no shootout in playoffs.
