#2533638 Confused on the direction of this team going forward

Posted by Zetts on 03 August 2014 - 06:41 PM

We have 5 players over the age of 31.....Franzen (34), Zetterberg (33), Cleary (35), Kronwall (33) and Datsyuk (36) and 3 of those 5 are elite talents. Your statement makes it sound like our team is littered with older players who aren’t performing. We have two in Cleary and Franzen.

It seems like the strong point made in this post has been lost in an argument of semantics.  I don't care if you call Kronwall "elite" or "very good" or whatever else.

Ignoring Cleary and (on and off) Franzen, all of our players over 31 are clearly pulling their weight.

Yea, but no one says what they'd do as GM. I bet if the average Red Wing fan became GM, he/she would make horrible trades and sign over priced UFA's. We'd be like the Leafs and our team would be build around guys like Kessel, Phaneuf, Lupul, Clarkson, van Reimsdyk and Bozak for the next 4 years plus. No thanks, I'll take Kenny, who's building the team with the draft, isn't signing any over priced UFA's, and actually knows how the cap works.

I understand signing Quincey and Cleary isn't "sexy", but they're only 1 and 2 year deals. That Niskanen deal is insane! Smith and Dekeyser are going to be better then him. Unless a team has drafted the player, I don't think any UFA should be signed for over 4 years. Do an online search and see how many horrible long term UFA signings there's been since 2005-06. The Wings don't have any bad ones over 3 years. The only potential bad one could be Weiss, but he's got a few years to still make the deal a good one.

Yes and Dan Cleary can play better hockey than anyone on this board too.  Like Cleary, Ken Holland is a professional (in theory), who is paid a LOT of money to do his job

Pretty much anyone in a professional field is better at their job than someone who isn't part of that field.  But that certainly doesn't mean that an outsider can't objectively see when someone is sucking at their job.

Edit: To add to that, if the new standard for managing the Wings is, "well, he's better than fans on a message board," we're in a s**t-tonne of trouble.

#2531423 Tom Renney could be leaving, too.

Babcock is probably next.

Maybe he'll stay if we keep re-signing Cleary.  It could be like the Kopecky/Hossa situation.

Just re-sign Alfredsson now and call it an off-season.

Jurco gets buried in GR.

I have honestly never been more disappointed/unexcited for the Wings than this off-season.

#RedWings GM Ken Holland: "My program has been one of loyalty and there's good and bad that goes with that. Way more good, in my opinion."

so is holland himself admitting that the cleary signing is a bad one?

Oh FFS Kenny, if it's that important, stick him in some BS front office job.  We're all greatful for what he did in the past, but MOVE ON.

#2530675 Red Wings Target Mike Green

Posted by Zetts on 08 July 2014 - 05:40 PM

How about Helm and Kindl straight up?  Sign Morris, have two RH d-men, waive Lashoff, #kfq is your 7th guy...

Kronwall - Green

Smith - Dekeyser

Ericsson - Morris

I know he's had injury issues, but you don't trade a player like Helm unless you're getting a really, really good return.

The point is we lost. I don't care if it's 7 games against Chi or 5 against Bos, a loss is a loss. Saying it was close or saying we got crushed are both stupid. Many thigs could have gone differently.

It does matter when you're evaluating the quality of your team in preparation for the next season though.  Barely losing an extremely hard fought series vs clearly never having a chance in a series suggest two very different things and likely different approaches for what you address in the off-season.

4 teams have not made a signing today: Boston, Columbus, Detroit and Nashville. #TSN #FAF

Well that's not true.  We signed Kevin Porter...

#2522955 Dan Boyle's rights traded to the Islanders…..

Posted by Zetts on 05 June 2014 - 08:49 PM

Except that he's going to get $5 or $6 million.  You all comfortable paying that type of money for Dan Boyle?

If it's on a one year deal, yes.  We'll certainly have the cap space, so at least from a fan's perspective, it's largely irrelevant.  We're not the ones paying him.

It'll be fine.  Everybody was saying the same thing about Kronwall early in his career when he kept getting injured.  Now it's not an issue.

It's not as though he keeps having a recurring injury of the same type, like re-injuring his back multiple times or sustaining a lot of concussions.  He's just been going through some bad luck.

#2429807 Smith files for arbitration

Posted by Zetts on 12 July 2013 - 05:46 PM

Would you guys be happy if the Wings went big on Smith right now?

8 years, 20 million?

Something between 2-2.5 mil per for as long a term as possible?

I'd be happy.

From what I've seen, I'm one of the bigger Smith supporters here.

And at that, if Smith was signed to that deal I would probably throw my laptop out the fourth-storey window currently in front of me.

Perhaps because the Wings don't usually have to go to arbitration with their players.

Aside from Kyle Quincey last season, the previous Red Wing to take them to arbitration was Ray Sheppard in 1995. Sheppard was then dealt to San Jose in the Larionov deal, if memory serves correctly.

Maybe he just wants to expedite the process of getting a contract completed.  There's nothing to indicate he's asking for a ridiculous amount.  I really don't see the "ego" angle to this.

Smith has an ego enough to do this after his play last season? LOL THESE KIDS ARE HILARIOUS

Could you explain why you believe that filing for arbitration means that he has a big ego?  We don't know anything about the negotiations between Holland and Smith's agent to this point.

Because he played terrible during that 1/2 season.  You could say the same thing about Dekeyser, only he played even fewer games.  You know what the difference is?  One of them didn't make several boneheaded mistakes each game, while failing to live up to the one thing that got them to the NHL in the first place.  Brendan Smith was awful, defensively (which I don't care about as much because it was always a given that he'd need to improve there) AND offensively (which is a worse sin since he was supposedly an offensive defenseman).

I'm sure he'll improve.  But you can't whitewash the truth.  Yes he was a rookie, so is every player at one time or another.  But not every rookie sucks doorknobs.

Dekeyser played unreasonably well for someone jumping into the NHL like that.  Most defensemen when they enter the league play closer to how Smith did than Dekeyser.

I'll fully admit I was hoping for more from Smith.  I'm still confident he'll become a much stronger player over time though.  As I've mentioned before, Jiri Fischer was despised on these boards for the longest time.  You can't give up on players right away.  (And by "you", I don't literally mean you, Kip, I mean the large group of people here that bash Smith.)  There's frequently a huge lack of patience here.

#2427641 Wings interested in Morrow

Posted by Zetts on 05 July 2013 - 06:11 PM

Someone needs to turn the "OFF" switch on Ken Holland. He is short circuiting and trying to sign every player left.

Hey, maybe he just read LGW and got pissed at how much crap he was getting for not signing people.

I'd like to see someone make a joke about Kenny golfing now...
