The rebuild is on, folks.  There's no way around that.  How good of a rebuild it's going to be is another story.

 

The sooner we cut ties with White, Colo, Sammy, and Bert, the better.  We can't have this anymore.  No more useless old men or injury-prone risks.  Just cut the fat and accept that the team is headed back into the toilet for a while.

I'm happy Holland stood pat-- this Wings roster isn't a trade or two away from winning the Cup this spring.  If we can't win now it'd be stupid to pick up rentals.  With the cap dropping things will be wild this summer, might as well retain as much flexibility and as many draft pics as we can.

Seems a bit silly but this must mean Filppula is ready for Wednesday.  Add Filppula to Datsyuk's wing in place of Cleary or Abdelkader (although Babcock likes anchoring Datsyuk with Abs because he's big and strong which apparently means he might fill Holmstrom's role some day).  Holland's said they don't want to bring Nyquist up without a top 6 spot to put him (see: Datsyuk's wing) which means someone on the 3rd line has to get slotted farther down. 

They'll bring Tatar back up from GR soon enough-- they just don't want to have to put someone on waivers right now and Tomas is still exempt.

I am not someone who believes that tatar or Nyquist is our future. tatar has played well, but what we have seen is his max. That being said, he should still be here. Bringing up Nyquist is ok with me. Not sure why we would be switching them, with so many other stiffs on the team. The only way this makes sense is: trades. they are giving both a taste and have something in mind. One or both getting moved. Otherwise this makes no sense.

If the players weren't employees being paid millions of dollars a year to work I'd agree that to some extent it's a personal choice.  But let's be honest-- each of these guys represent a pretty sizeable financial investment by the individual owners and in the end it's reasonable to want to protect that investment.  You can't tell your boss you refuse to wear a hard hat on the job site because it violates your personal liberty-- you're welcome to quit with your liberty intact but if they're paying you to work on site they have the right to require you to take reasonable safety precautions.

Is this team a deadline trade away from the Cup?  No.  So let's get a good draft pick for once.

This is a fantastic deal for Detroit.  Locking him in for 3 years at $725,000 per is a bargain.  He's slipped in and quietly proved he can be a Brad Stuart type of player for the Wings.  Not many defensemen walk in on their first call-up and average 18:54 each night as a top 4 d-man. 

Just look at where Lashoff's managed to fit in among the defense...

His stats after 15 games, ranked against the other Wings defensemen:

1g 2a 3pts (4th)

2:56 SH TOI/G (3rd)

18:54 TOI/G (4th)

21 Blocked Shots (3rd)

23 Hits (1st)

4 PIM (5th, and pretty impressive given how physical he is and that he's a rookie)

-4 +/- (worst-- tied with Kronwall)

He's managed to completely outplay Quincey as a rookie with no previous call-up experience. 

Honestly, after last night it's really hard to disagree with you on this.  The kids from GR are alright.

You clearly have me confussed with someone else. I am not nor have ever been a Wild fan, nor has anyone ever accussed me of being one.

The point I was making and stand by, AHL points mean nothing in regards to predicting NHL performence. This is true in every sport, it just isn't the same.

I do have a question for those that believe these guys are so good. if they are, how come none of them, not one beat out guys like Miller, eaves, cleary, Emmerton, Mursak, etc....? They were all in shape-already played 30 games or so. yet not one was able to beat any of those guys out? Not one of the guys I mentioned is signed to a big money long term contract. Most are FA's restricted or free after the year. yet, none lost their jobs. If tatar, nyquist, andersson etc are so good, then shouldn't have at least one of them won a job from that group of very limited players?

A) Can someone help me out here? Wasn't there a troll here with almost he same name that annoyed us to no end back before the July 2012 signing bonanza?

B) How exactly is your argument any different for these guys than it is for other NHL prospects?  You can make the same argument for any prospect who fails to crack the NHL in his draft year.  Datsyuk didn't play in the NHL as an 18 year old, so surely he wasn't anything special, right?  Or are you just an ass?  (Pro tip: the correct answer is the latter)

Tatar has similar points per game to Emmerton's best year in GR, .55/game for Tatar & .59/game for Emmerton, as a 19 year old getting his first exposure to North American hockey. That best year for Emmerton was when he was 23. Tatar, who is 22 as of December 1st, is currently sitting at .88 points per game in GR this season. So yeah, nothing to see here when it comes to comparing Tatar to an at best career 12th/13th forward.

Just wanted to point this out: Ogre is comparing Tatar's rookie year in the AHL with Emmerton's 4th professional year (which was his most productive year in GR).   Oh and Tatar was the youngest player in the entire AHL that year.

Tatar's AHL stats this year: 19g/20a/39pts in 44games =>  0.89 points per game (pro rated to 71pts in an 80 game AHL season).

Just to further reenforce Ogre here:  Tatar is tied for 8th in the entire AHL in points and 8th in goals scored despite having missed games due to his NHL call-up.

It's gonna be a sad day when Tatar, Lashoff and possibly Mrazek get sent back down to GR for the line-up tampons to come back. <--- Aside from Helm of course.

We should give Holland the benefit of the doubt here.. so far he's shown a willingness to keep Lashoff up (although it appears Huskins is getting some time off after that big hit) despite having 6 NHL d-men on the roster and is scratching an NHL forward to keep Tatar on the roster (Eaves sat last night for Tatar).

The Wings currently have the top defenseman in the QMJHL and the top dman in the OHL (and the only dman that was able to keep up with Dougie Hamilton in points per game this year before he left for the NHL).  They also have one of the top defensive prospects in the SEL.

Sure we don't have the 1st overall type players garbage franchises like Edmonton have (don't doubt that Edmonton's been absolute trash for a decade) but not many teams do.

If Ken Holland doesn't think he can make a trade or signing to keep the Wings in the thick of the hunt for the Cup he won't make the move.  The time for short-term extensions of the team's quality ended when Lidstrom retired.

It's interesting that people haven't seemed to notice that Holland's accelerated the pace of his 'overripe' prospect pipeline.  Tatar, Sheahan, Jurco and Mrazek all joined the AHL as early as possible (you're not allowed to put players in the AHL before their overage Jr season).  Pulkkinen, Jarnkrok and Backman can all make the transition to the AHL next season and are expected to. 

The lockout screwed us out of being able to properly evaluate prospects vs veterans this year so Holland appears to have played it as safe as possible.  It remains to be seen whether he'll start transitioning kids into the line-up above and beyond the injury replacements but I suspect that depends on whether the Wings look like they can make a real push by the time that situation arises.

People can assume Ken Holland's retarded all they want but this is the first time he's gotten a real license to rebuild (with Lidstrom on the team you have to keep taking runs at the Cup) and it's only 3 games into a lockout shortened season.

Who are these kids?

 

Our farm system isn't as good as people here make it out to be.  

Nyquist, Tatar, Mrazek, Oulette, Sproul, Jarnkrok, Jurco, Frk, and Paterson are all highly regarded.  Ferraro, Sheahan and Andersson are all having break-out years (Andersson was just named the AHL's player of the week).  The Wings had 2 players on Team Canada's WJC team (and one who just missed the cut), two of the highest regarded defensemen in the OHL, one of the top forwards in the QMJHL (Frk has 38pts in 28gms), 2 kids named to the AHL All-Star team and a leading candidate for the AHL's rookie of the year (Mrazek).  On top of this they also have 2 forwards in the Q who are putting up at least a point per game (Quine and Athanasiou) who aren't even included among the players I just listed.

It's ok to doubt the enthusiasm of some posters but you're deeply, deeply incorrect in stating that the Wings farm system isn't excellent.

This is cool. It's not amazing but I won't complain, it's nice. At least the worst seats at the Joe aren't as bad as most arenas. Places like the Bell Center and Saddledome and many others are much worse.

The worst seats at the Saddledome are worse than getting mugged out back.  At least you can tell what's happening when you get mugged.

 I'd take Boumeester over Yandle any day and 3 times out of 3, given the right system this guy can be a stud again but I don't think Holland is willing to move the pieces to get him.

JBo's offensive output hasn't been worth his pay cheque in years.  He gets more mins in Calgary than he would here, so why would you assume his production would increase significantly?  The difference in mins should make up for the small difference in systems
