#2545521 10/29 GDT - Red Wings 4 @ Capitals 2

Smith and Abby are becoming leaders... showing grit.

Yes Abs is showing better offensive instincts but time will tell if this is just the stretch of games where he scores a third of his season total goals or if he really can sustain a solid offensive pace all season. I still question whether he has it in him but hopefully he does.

I am 100% surprised by Smiths improvement in the defensive game. If he can just somehow start getting some points all that early career hype might be true. As a whole the wings really need to start getting more offensive support from the backline.

Hey everyone! I'm a long time lurker coming out of the shadows. Strangely enough my first post is to ask if someone can explain what exactly Luke Glendening does to agitate so well? Does he seem to chirp a lot or is it because he's like white on rice against other teams stars? Usually I would just watch the guy but my crazy schedule this year so far has me listening to most of the games on radio and then catching the highlights. Oh yeah and following the GDT helps a lot too. Thanks I've been wondering about this.

Hes Maltby minus the 50 goal junior year offensive game. Always on you during the game with added chirping. Then when you want to bash his face in he frustrates you more by refusing to drop the gloves.

Just watched a recording of the game. My thoughts:

1. Howard was real good again especially the first half of the game. Him and Hank have been the best Wings this month.

2. The recognition of the Wings PK on the stretch pass from the goalie was pretty poor. Washington just missed on it before there first goal and then used it to score 30 seconds later. Then almost had the same thing happen on Dats penalty.

3. Tatar and Jurco have been the biggest disappointments this month. Both seem to be in the sophomore slump. When Franzen comes back the best move might be to send Jurco down. Hes invisible every shift it seems.

4. Smith again showing strong.

5. That phantom goalie interference might be one of the worst calls I've ever seen.

6. Watching Glendening make Ovie throw a tantrum at the end of the game was great.

7. The PP needs to get fixed. An extra goal every night or two from the PP will be the difference from top 3 and top 6 in conference.

8. Entertaining game of hockey.

Speaking of when Franzen comes back, if you ask me, I think we all can agree that Cleary is the one that should be waived instead of Nesty or Jurco being sent down...Now in that scenario I would welcome Franzen back with open arms!

Well Jurco hasnt been that much more effective than Cleary lol

Gonna be a recurring theme this year. Detroit just doesnt have enough proven NHL scoring right now.

2 goals on 10 shots. If Howard was in net people would be trying to crucify him.

jimmys been stellar whys everyone up his ass all the time?

The Wings could have the spawn of Terry Sawchuk and Dominik Hasek in net and there would be those wings fans that would complain that they are terrible. Its called "next goalie up'itis" and it has plagued Wings fans for years despite 4 Stanley Cups. There is no known cure....

Fair enough.  But he's got to be better.  As I stated, shootouts are a big part of the NHL playoff picture for the lower seeded teams.

If the team can get him some goal support in shootouts then I think you might see him save more. It seems like he feels he has to stop everything to even have the slimmest shot at winning a SO and tightens up.

For everyone crying for Tatar, we don't know who our 3rd shooter would have been, do we?

True, but he should have been the first or second regardless.

For guys complaining about Nes in the SO... You guys do know he scored on Rask in the SO in preseason? so why not

Your first shooter is the most important. They set the tone for the rest of the SO as to whether your playing catchup or trying to finish the game. You need your best player shooting first not a rookie 3 games into his career.

What would possess you to put Nes in for the shootout? I have been wondering why he is even on this team honestly. Can't blame the guy for not scoring in the shootout since he didn't play for the last 15+ minutes, but man that was an ugly attempt.

Nes has been solid 5 on 5 for it being his first couple games. As effective as Abs, Miller, and Anderson.

There's Howard being "below" average like he usually is in shootouts.  ''

And again.  Remember how many shootout points Howard lost us last year?

Really. Your going to bag on Howard for the shootout when he was the only reason the Wings got a point. Rremember that you have to score in the shootout to win. The Wings were just as  bad at converting in the shootout as Howard was stopping them last year so dont put all those lost points on Howard. Look at the attempts by Boston compared to the attempts by Detroit tonight. Same thing as last year.

#2540276 10/11/14 GDT: Game 2 | Ducks 3 @ Red Wings 2

Posted by GoalieManPat on 12 October 2014 - 02:16 AM

it's just that every scoring chance is in the back of the net. I never noticed a single big save from him. We were dominating in the 3rd and he lets in two on there only two decent scoring chances. Obviously a good team is going to push hard and you have to expect your goalie to make a save on a good scoring chance at least once a game. but none today and we lose

I think your dislike for Howard is screwing your perception of what happened. You say every good chance goes in but your conveniently forgetting the saves he does make. Getzlaf wide open from the slot the last couple minutes with traffic in front of him right after another wings turnover. That was a big save. The first goal was definitely his blunder but he played well the rest of the game. Certainly wasnt the reason the wings lost. You said in another post that so far Howard has been outplayed by both goalies so far. Jimmy beat Rask only giving up one goal which was a pretty darn good shot. Pretty much the same shot that Nyquist beat Andersen with tonight yet you demonize Howard for letting it in and not Andersen? Glendenings goal was extremely weak. Had Howard let that in he would be getting crucified by you and others on the boards but another goalie lets it in and he still is considered to have "outplayed" Howard.

Plain and simple there are always going to be Wings fans that point to the goalie first after a loss but in reality this game was lost mostly due to the Wings inability to finish chances and one poor officiating decision. The game should have been 4-2 before the Getzlaf incident had the forwards come through. The Wings opened the season against the two highest point teams last year and outplayed them both. Encouraging start to the season. 80 more like those two and the Wings will be alright.

#2534019 What Might Have Been: Gretzky to Detroit?

Posted by GoalieManPat on 11 August 2014 - 04:46 PM

I stand by my original statement.  Gretzky retired in 1999 at the age of 38 with 62 points.  In 2002 Yzerman was 37 and put up 48 pts.

So the question is, do I believe a 41 year old Gretzky (the age he would have been in 2002) could put up more than 48 points on that team?

Yes, yes I do.

Despite his retirement, I'd still rather have had Gretzky in 2002 than Yzerman.

Maybe but a 41 year old Gretzky would in no way be as effective as Yzerman was defensively. Gretzky may have matched him in points but the Wings would have given up quite a few more.

it most definitely would have cost us Yzerman, but I would've been ok with that. Fedorov was the key to our Cups

Wow that comment is baffling. 97 sure Feds was better. 98 Yzerman wins Conn Smythe. 02 Yzerman. Your forgetting one major thing and that was Stevie Y's leadership. Feds was not even close to the leader that Stevie was. Dont forget the Wings were down 0-2 going into Vancouver in the first round before Yzerman rallied the troops. You dont have Yzerman on the team and theres a good chance that hall of fame Wings team is out in the 1st round.

#2531833 What is the plan with Mrazek?

No way that Gus groin last a whole season. Mrazek will get 15+ games this year plus starters role in GR. Hes in Detroit from the start next year.

#2531221 Wings re-sign Cleary $1.5 mill + $1mill in game bonuses

Posted by GoalieManPat on 10 July 2014 - 05:07 PM

What makes me the most infuriated with this signing is Holland doesnt seem to be making this move to better the team. Hes doing it to basically give his buddy a free paycheck and keep a promise that shouldnt have been made. Kind of like if your own a place and your kind of forced to give a job to a cousin, in law, or friend even though they arent qualified but because they are family/friends. You know they wont improve the workplace but it makes your conscience feel good by doing it.

This same article also has Holland saying Cleary will have to beat out other players to be in the lineup. But lets ignore that because it isn;t in line with Holland bashing.

Do you really believe that Holland will release or demote Cleary over a youngster that can be sent down even if the youngster completely outplays Cleary?? What message does it send to the young players in the organization? They preach to them to work hard and youll earn your spot but all they end up seeing is those spots theyve earned given to players that should have been put out to pasture years ago.

You look at the decisions that Nill has made in his short time in Dallas compared to the decisions Holland has been making and its becoming ever more clear to me that Nill might have been the true brains in the front office.

I really dont want to pile on Cleary as theres no doubt the guy gave 150% every game to the organization and it would be disrespectful to him to insult him where he should be commended for his work. Its clear though that in giving all that it took way to much of a toll on his body. He just cant perform at the NHL level anymore. Lets be honest who in there right mind would turn down that contract though at his age. I cant be mad at Cleary. All the blame needs to be on Holland.
