I was only able to watch parts of the Pens game and I have to say I'm understanding the negative rep Smitty's been getting here on LGW. The few games I've seen him in this preseason were not that good. I'm hoping he turns things around when the season starts up.
I still think there is a lot of untapped potential with him, too. Maybe he'll pull a Quincey and flourish with another team - in a hypothetical scenario that has him traded, of course.
The silver lining in the whole thing, for me, is that we are so deep with defensive prospects that we could probably afford to trade him if that scenario did present itself. I'd imagine that he could get a pretty decent return as well, or otherwise be a big piece of a larger trade.
For the record I like Smith and I hope he stays and gets better. I'm just an optimist and I like to look for the positive side of potential negatives (Smith staying in this funk and/or getting traded).
he's terrible, and that doesn't look to be changing any time soon.
Exactly how many players on this team are notterrible, or "losers" as you have said before? In your assuredly very astute, non-opprobrious opinion, I mean.

Good god, by the talk around here you'd think Babcock or Holland already came out and said Tatar will certainly be gone. Why is it that everyone thinks this will adversely affect Tatar and not Eaves, Tootoo, Miller, Bertuzzi, or Samuelsson?
Oh I know, because as the last 10+ years of free agency and trade deadlines have shown us, the Detroit Red Wings constantly throw away quality prospects right?

Chevelle - The Red @3:05 First thing that came to mind for me. Kind of like how the jackets would use just the beginning of Machine Head by Bush whenever the players would get on the ice (which was quite awesome btw).
In a game shrouded in superstition, I imagine there are some players who are not too happy about this. I mean you're not even allowed to say shutout until the game is over so I imagine planning a cup parade before the season even starts is gonna drive some people nuts. Leafs go 0-82 this season lol.
Uhh...have you seen the regular season and playoffs? He the definition of a natural goal scorer. The puck always found him. He's one dimensional in that he basically has zero defensive game but his purpose on this team would be to shoot and score goals. I think the term "floater" gets thrown around too often in these forums.
I'm not saying I think he's more valuable than Tatar or nyquist, it goes without saying that he is not, but how many successful shoot first players do we have? None.
I agree he is worthless defensively, but what he can bring to the table for the Wings is pretty valuable. We have enough Clearys, we need more brunners.
Oh, definitely no argument here, in regard to Neidermeyer I mean. But shooting a puck at someone? Pretty careless and childish IMO. Its on the same level as Mclellan coming into the game for 45 seconds and slashing mule in the stomach. It makes me sick every time I see his face on tsn.
Kenny: -Mentions Glendening in Grand Rapids success like he's our prospect. -Thinks Howard can be a top6-8 goalie during the course of his contract. -Helm feeling better, will skate at development camp. -Wants to keep Kindl, says due for a raise. -"If you got 10 good prospects, 6 will make it". -Backman "going to camp"(I suppose development), then back to Sweden for another year before "turning pro". -Says the veterans on the team are excited about moving to the East, play some new opponents. -Said multiple times they're disappointed with losing to Chicago even if it was a learning experience. -Says that both sides probably could've gone longer term with Pavel, but that both were happy with another four years(in total). Hopes for one year extensions afterwards, says Pavel wouldn't ever play anywhere else in the NHL. -Thinks true cup contenders are a thing of the past. -Asked if Howard/Mrazek might turn into a Luongo/Schneider, Quick/Bernier etc. scenario. Says they have the option to play him another three years in the American league without worrying about waivers. At 21 years of age, they need him to play 60 games, not 15. Says next year is AHL for sure as Gus is signed, and then make a decision next summer if it's time to bring him up. Says he will play som pre-season games in the fall. -Would love to get a legitimate top pairing/top3 defenseman, will make room if needed. -DeKeyser, Nyquist, Tatar, Andersson, Lashoff are expected on the team from the Griffins.
