#2535899 2015 Winter Classic : Blackhawks vs. Capitals at Nationals Park

Posted by evilmrt on 10 September 2014 - 09:07 PM

WTF is this?

Chicago and Washington are not even close to being rivals.

They could have....oh I don't know....given everyone Montreal and Boston

Or hey, how about Vancouver and San Jose in Seattle? I'm surprised Bettman wasn't all over that one.

Semin is not, and never was the answer. That guy who did the Wings AMA on reddit (take it for what it's worth) indicated that the Wings were interested in signing a certain Russian winger a few years back (some say it could have been Radulov, but it was most likley Semin) and when they asked Datsyuk if he would babysit/workwithhim, Pavel gave a big fat NO.

Even if that's all made up I still don't want him. Semin would last exactly one season, if that, with Babcock. Franzen actually plays defense, despite what his detractors here will tell you.

I'll do it myself

I'd sign Semin to a contract just so I could see him do that again.

So...it's really over?

#2534257 Holland signs 4 year extension with wings **MOD Warning Post 130**

Posted by krsmith17 on 14 August 2014 - 01:53 PM

Some people won't be happy, no matter what happens... I have accepted that... It's sad but very true...

I'm really happy that Kenny is going to remain with the club for the foreseeable future. Those of you that aren't... whatever...

There would be 29 other teams lining up to pay Holland crazy amounts of money if he were let go, and for good reason. Same goes for Babcock, but I bet there would still be angry Wings fans if they signed him to an extension. While it's true that you can never please everyone, some people can never be pleased...

Chiarelli guy knows how to build a team and the Bruins fans aren't happy with him

That does not mean he's going to be fired at all lol. Red Wings fans HATE Holland right now and the guy just got an extension. Why? Because 99% of fans are blithering idiots who can't see past the next immediate season, so I'm sure the organization really couldn't care less what we think.

EDIT: There's no option available better than Holland

"@AnsarKhanMLive: Wings have signed GM Ken Holland to a four-year extension through 2017-18."

Hopefully babs is next.

#2533774 Who is YOUR most under-appreciated/unsung Red Wing?

Posted by number9 on 05 August 2014 - 09:57 PM

Whatever bro.  All I know is that Orr owned him.  Hard.

He's got the Eye of the Tiger.

Two best fighters of their era:  1. Colton Orr  2. Andreas Lilja.

Nobody really cares about number three (Brian McWhateverbro).

"This is Brian McCandyass of the Calgary Flames here with a special public service announcement.  Kids, don't do drugs.  Also, don't get stupid looking haircuts or get pole-axed by Colton Orr.  All three will embarrass your mother at church.  This is the face of a guy who embarrasses his mother at church.  Don't be that guy kids, don't be that guy."

Whoa... Andreas is #2 to no man

Everybody talks about this Lidstrom guy, but as soon as Lilja left this team we went downhill.... Dots connected yet?

#2534154 What Might Have Been: Gretzky to Detroit?

Posted by Son of a Wing on 13 August 2014 - 12:53 PM

Because Gretzky was putting up more points on significantly worse teams.  At every single stage of their respective careers Wayne Gretzky was a superior player.  I know that it's become fashionable over the years to downplay just how good this guy was, but the truth is, he's not universally considered the greatest hockey player in the history of the game because he was actually worse than Steve Yzerman.

Again, this is just a case of hometown nostalgia.  As I've already said, it's like saying you wouldn't trade Ray Bourque for Bobby Orr (I know, same team) just because Bourque was really good too.

Given their respective careers up to that point, you'd be a complete and total fool to not trade Yzerman for Gretzky in 1988.

You're twisting his words. I think Hoon had a very valid point.

He refuted your statement..

"You take the same teams as we had in 97, 98, and 2002 and swap Yzerman for Gretzky and we're WAY better."

...by addressing the fact that Gretzky was nearing retirement for 97/98 and actually in retirement for 2002 and in comparison, Yzerman was in his 2-way prime.

A very valid point.

I'm actually really surprised about the people that would have been willing to trade Yzerman for Gretzky. I wouldn't have even considered trading them straight up, let alone the other pieces that would have had to be involved to get that deal done. Yzerman was my favorite player back then and the sole reason I am a Red Wings fan today. To be quite honest, if Yzerman would have been traded back then, I would probably be an Oilers fan today... Scary... :shocking:

I'm definitely glad that Holland and Jimmy D are much more loyal to this team and players than most fans would be...

How many people would trade Zetterberg and pieces to Pittsburgh for Crosby? I know there are definitely quite a few that would but I definitely would not. Hank is our captain and I wouldn't want to lose him, even if it meant getting the best player in the world for him. Even knowing that Zetterberg may only have another 5 solid years left and Crosby has another 15, I still wouldn't do it. Crazy? Probably, but that's my opinion...

#2533952 Greatest Wings game ever

Posted by Jersey Wing on 09 August 2014 - 03:34 PM

March 26th jumps to the fore, it's a historic marker which I think elevates it above the others. That being said the 7-0 game vs Colorado is close as is the 2-1 win to sweep the Flyers. The greatest one I ever saw live (and I've seen hat tricks by LaPointe and Fedorov) was waaaaaaaay back on February 23, 1989. I had to do some research to find this game and confirm all my claims lol. Some buddies and I left work to go get SRO tickets as the mighty Mario Penguins were in town. The building started out ugly as the Wings fell behind 6-0. SIX TO NOTHING. By the end of the night the fans were jumping on one another and hugging and it was one of the loudest nights I've ever heard JLA, the Wings stormed back to TIE the game at 6-6 where the game ended. Way too much fun, waaaay too many beers.

I'd say Holmstrom.

Guy was never remotely close to being an All star caliber player, and his 530 career points won't impress anybody who didn't see him play, when they look back at his stats 20 years from now.

However, he was so important, even when he didn't score a point.  Imagine how many goals were scored that he didn't even register a point on, where he was somehow largely responsible for the goal with his screens.

#2533193 That Time Mike Vernon Used the Jedi Mind Trick

Posted by Dabura on 28 July 2014 - 03:56 PM

Thought this was worth pointing out:

How Mike Vernon set the stage for Patrick Roy's trade from Montreal [SBNation.com]

Mike Vernon: I recall even having a conversation with Patrick Roy, in Montreal, at the little breakfast place there, the spot we always used to go to. And uh, I just walked in by myself and I was early to the rink or something like that, and he was there like "Mike, come here, I want to talk to you." He goes, "The pressure, the media, the fans..." he was just... I knew he was thoroughly upset about all of this, and it was really bothering him. And I said, Patrick, you just have to get traded. I said I got traded, I'm enjoying it in Detroit and everything else, and lo and behold that game was the game where he went up to the president.

Adds a neat little wrinkle to the Wings-Avs rivalry.

It's a good day. I saw DeKeyser earlier say on Twitter he was confident a new deal would get done sooner rather than later so yes, a good day.
