Ericsson close to 3-year deal?

George Malik at MLive.com' Snapshots blog came across a potential gem in Sweden's Aftonbladet, which reports that the Red Wings are on the verge of signing blue chip prospect defenseman Jonathan Ericsson to a three-year, $2.7-million contract. The 24-year old blueliner would reportedly earn $550,000 in 2008-09, $900,000 in 2009-10 and $1,250,000 in the final year of the contract. Ericsson, who's salary cap hit would be $900,000, would remain eligible to play in Grand Rapids this coming season. More ›

Wings' 2008-09 Schedule Released

The Red Wings will play host to the Toronto Maple Leafs as the 2008-09 season kicks off with Detroit's 2008 Stanley Cup championship banner raising ceremony on October 9th. The Wings will also take part in the NHL Winter Classic outdoor game against the Chicago Blackhawks in Wrigley Field and face every NHL club at least once next season, including three Eastern Conference teams twice: Atlanta, Buffalo and Pittsburgh. Official: Wings vs. 'Hawks Winter Classic

As expected, the National Hockey League announced this afternoon that the 2009 Winter Classic will take place January 1st, 2009 at 1pm ET between the Red Wings and Blackhawks in Chicago's storied Wrigley Field. The game will mark the 701st time the two Original Six franchises have faced eachother, the most of any other NHL matchup. The game will be broadcast nationally in the US by NBC and in Canada by CBC and RDS. More ›

Ticket prices get adjustment for 08-09

Ted Kulfan of the Detroit News reports today that Red Wings season ticket holders should be getting their renewal packages in the mail today, and if you'd like to lock in to last season's ticket prices you'll have to act quick. Season ticket renewals after August 4th will see a $2 hike in prices. Kulfan also notes that 1,869 upper bowl tickets have dropped to $33 from last season's $44, while the first three rows off the glass have rocketed up to $125 from $85 last season. More ›

Drake will finish career a champion

The Detroit Free Press reports today that 16-year veteran Dallas Drake will retire, closing a long NHL career as a Stanley Cup champion. Drake announced his decision earlier today. Drake, who originally started his NHL career in Detroit before being traded in 1994, closes out his NHL career with 177 goals, 300 assists and 885 PIMs in 1,009 regular-season games. More ›

Holland expects Filppula deal soon

George Sipple of the Detroit Free Press spoke with GM Ken Holland earlier today and touched on a few key topics, one being the ongoing negotiations with restricted free agent forward Valtteri Filppula. "We're exploring if we should do long-term or if it makes sense to do short-term and re-address it two years from now," said Holland, who fully expects to reach a contract agreement with Filppula prior to the scheduled August 1st arbitration hearing. More ›

Filppula hearing set for Aug. 1

The salary arbitration hearing date for Valtteri Filppula has been scheduled for August 1st, giving the Red Wings and Filppula's agent, Bill Zito, three weeks to work out a contract agreement before seeing the arbitor. The Red Wings haven't had a problem coming to contract agreements with players filing for arbitration -- the last player to reach an arbitration hearing was Ray Sheppard in 1995. More ›

Wings release preseason schedule

The Red Wings will open the 2008-09 NHL Preseason in Joe Louis Arena against the Montreal Canadiens, reports Ansar Kahn of MLive.com. Rafalski, Maltby DVD signing on Tuesday

Defenseman Brian Rafalski and forward Kirk Maltby will be taking part in a pair of autograph signing events as part of the official release of the Red Wings 2008 Stanley Cup Champions DVD Tuesday in Dearborn and Novi, respectively. Wings in Chicago for outdoor game

As originally reported by the Chicago Sun-Times back near the end of May, it appears that an official announcement is only a formality: the Red Wings will face the host Chicago Blackhawks in Wrigley Field in January as part of the NHL's Heritage Classic outdoor game. The announcement is expected to come next week before the Blackhawks Convention at the Chicago Hilton. More ›
