Which Game 7 Will Fans Be Treated To?

As Detroit moves closer to its Game 7 matchup vs. Anaheim Thursday night, they find themselves playing in a new type of playoff series, sudden death playoffs. Win and move on, lose and grab your golf bags. It’s that simple.

The last time the Red Wings found themselves in this scenario was against the Avalanche in the 2002 playoffs. The situation was slightly different; the Wings were at the time the underdog (down three games to two) and Dominik Hasek was in net. Eventually the team clawed back into the series stealing Game 6 and eventually toppled Colorado in Game 7, with a 7-0 victory.

With Osgood behind the reins now, the question is, “what is the Red Wings record in a Game 7 with Chris Osgood between the pipes?” that answer gives you the highs and lows all in one quick breath, 1-1.

The victory was one for the ages. A 1996 double overtime goal scored by Steve Yzerman with a shot taken just across center ice, giving the Red Wings a 1-0 victory and a bid for the Western Conference Finals.

The loss came in 1994 (Osgood’s rookie season) against the San Jose Sharks when a botched clearing attempted by Chris Osgood in the third period was intercepted by a Sharks player. With Osgood out of the net, the Sharks were left with an empty net to shoot at and stole the series as the eighth seeded Sharks defeated the top seeded Red Wings 3-2. To this day, the memory of Red Wings fans crying, as well as Osgood, is engraved in the minds of many.

As Wings fans await for Thursday’s Game 7, they can only wonder, will they experience the celebration of a St. Louis past or San Jose devastation?
