Henrik Zetterberg, Dan Cleary and Mikael Samuelsson all scored first-period goals to lead the Red Wings to a 3-1 win over Chicago Sunday night.
The victory was the first for the Red Wings against the Blackhawks this season. Through five games of the eight-game season series Detroit is just 1-3-1 against Chicago. The win was also Detroit's sixth-straight on the road and improved the club's overall record to 32-8-3.
The Wings wasted little time in taking the lead Sunday night with Zetterberg taking a nice pass from Andreas Lilja in the Chicago zone and beating Nikolai Khabibulin just 50 seconds into the game. Cleary made it 2-0 on a similar play at 14:06.
Samuelsson made it 3-0 with a power play goal that was the result of a slashing penalty taken by Khabibulin when he took exception to how close Wings forward Tomas Kopecky was skating by his crease. The goaltender used the blade of his goalstick to slightly spear Kopecky in the groin.
Rene Bourque scored late in the second period on a deflection of a shot taken by Tuomo Ruutu.
Goaltender Chris Osgood was again strong in net and finished with 19 saves on 20 shots. Khabibulin finished with 25 saves on 28 shots.
The Blackhawks were held to 0-for-2 on the power play, which marked the seventh-straight game the Red Wings have held an opponent to no power-play goals (a stretch of 25 kills).
The Red Wings finished 1-for-2.
