The Red Wings have found a replacement for former assistant coach Todd McLellan: former Detroit blueliner Brad McCrimmon. In the original report from Craig Custance of the Sporting News (via Kukla's Korner), McCrimmon was a popular choice of several Thrasher players -- including, at the time, Marian Hossa -- for the head coach position in Atlanta before the job eventually went to John Anderson after GM Don Waddell coached the remainder of the 2007-08 season.
McCrimmon played for the Red Wings from 1990-93 and helped the Calgary Flames win the Stanley Cup in 1989. He had spent the last four seasons in Atlanta and has also had an assistant position with the Flames and New York Islanders.
"I was there for three years as a player and loved it," McCrimmon told The Hockey News. "Now it's a great opportunity to go back. It's a good situation in the sense of the city, the team and what they've been doing there for a long time."
McCrimmon said he expects to make the deal official when he arrives in Detroit next week.
