Red Wings GM Ken Holland took part in Stoney & Wojo's annual Radiothon for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society on WDFN-1130am this afternoon and shed some light on the organization's contract talks and pursuits. Holland said he's spoken frequently with Bill Zito, the agent for Valtteri Filppula, and expects the two sides to reach an agreement "within the next few days". The two sides have a two-year deal to fall back on if a long-term contract cannot be worked out before next Friday's arbitration hearing.
The other interesting tidbit centers around the two-way contract offers to Darren McCarty and Aaron Downey. Holland mentioned that the Red Wings -- outside of contracts for Filppula and fellow restricted free agent Kyle Quincey -- won't be making any one-way contract offers to players. Holland stressed that he wants to be sure the club has the "flexibility to put the best team on the ice."
It is almost certain that if McCarty and/or Downey are unwilling to take a two-way contract they will not be re-signed. (Downey did have a two-way contract last season.)
