Why do your feet need to give out when Kronner at most made contact with his stick at hip level?

    Oh my. This could be 7-0 without Jimmy. Getting manhandled in every facet of the game.

    This is a clinic. Red and white not doing the schooling either.

    The Blues forecheck is relentless. A lot of size and speed up front on that team. I would love to have a player like Backes.

    I want to be mad at hockey, but no way can I give up the Red Wings. So stoked for tonight. Excited about our forwards, nervous about the defense. Especially looking forward to watching Smith and Brunner play. GDT looks terrific -- really nicely done. Let's Go Red Wings!

    Weekend Picks

I almost forgot to make my picks until remembering about this just a moment ago

Thank you! I meant to do that on Friday sometime once this slipped off the first page.

A few things I didn't mention earlier as well: You can make picks up to the point of the start for each respective game. Also, I decided to only drop one week of the lowest scores instead of two. There's only 15 weekends in the season, so I figured to count as many as possible over that time. If you all prefer two weeks dropped instead, I will gladly change it back.

EDIT: Thanks to the mod responsible for the pinned thread now.

    GM Ken Holland says Red Wings might not make playoffs this year

    <blockquote class='ipsBlockquote'data-author="kipwinger" data-cid="2340950" data-time="1358448568">
The Wings got worse on defense but improved their forward units and goal tending. I'm not so sure they "got worse" as you'd suggest.

The Flyers/Penguins method of winning 6-5 didn't work out too well and the Red Wings can't match either of those teams firepower up front. The drop on defense is significant. The goaltending duo is improved, but can they steal games with this defense likely needing that?

    GM Ken Holland says Red Wings might not make playoffs this year

    <blockquote class='ipsBlockquote'data-author="chrisdetroit" data-cid="2340924" data-time="1358445133">
The pessimism is astounding. The shortened season is working against us? Why is it working against us more than everybody else? Because we are older? But you could argue that the short season benefits the older guys and that the younger guys have less time to gain experience. It's all a matter of how you look at it. Detroit has the oldest team in the league but NJ is second and they lost in the finals last year.

Try to be objective people. Chicago did not improve, St. Louis did not improve, Nashville got worse, Columbus got worse. 7 teams in the west will not make the playoffs. IMO they are:

Columbus
Colorado
Minny
Edmonton
Calgary
Anaheim
Dallas
Phoenix

That's actually (8). Which 2 of those teams is better than us? I can't think of any Norris trophy candidates on any of those teams. We no longer have the best D-man in the West but neither do any of these 8.

In all of your "objective" points, you neglected mentioning the Red Wings team that won one playoff game also got worse. Lost two top-four defensemen and couldn't score goals when it mattered. The league has caught up and the Western Conference is very tough. It's not pessimism -- just reality and honest assessment of the current situation, which our own GM seems to agree with. I still think the Red Wings get in the playoffs as a lower seed, but there's a very real chance they also miss out.

    Kindl "Day to Day" with sore groin

    Well, good thing the strength of the team is blue line depth!

    GM Ken Holland says Red Wings might not make playoffs this year

    He's absolutely right. The West is extremely competitive and will be even more so over a 48 game schedule. Even with a full 82, I figured the Wings would be battling to just get in. This team needs a lot to go well (namely health and leaps in player development) to keep the playoff streak going.

    Weekend Picks

    Thanks for the feedback! I definitely wanted to play as well, but wasn't sure what the interest would be like for a short season. I think we will go with the pool tracker again, as it seemed to run pretty well. I know there were a few scoring glitches that required some attention, so I will keep a running tally of my own along with the site each week to ensure everything is accurate. If you have an account with pool tracker already, I think all you should have to do is log back in and submit your picks for this weekend. If you forgot your password like me, they will send you an e-mail right away with your account information. I imported all of the participants from last year into this one. If you would like to play for the first time, follow the link posted below and register using an e-mail address. However, please use your LGW name for the screen name portion to prevent confusion. Any questions or issues, feel free to let me know and I will do my best to help out. Thanks and good luck! http://www.pooltracker.com/join.asp?poolid=74828

    Regular Season Record Predictions!

    I would be thrilled with that record. I see a little tougher go of it for the Wings: 26-17-5 for 57 points and somewhere around 6th/7th in the West.

    Habs Tell Gomez - Don't Bother Coming To Camp

    We should have done this to Sammy. Just kidding. Maybe.
  17. Brunner looks excellent so far. Very slick with the puck. Nice to see Eaves out there as well.

    Wings Looking For Defenseman

    <blockquote class='ipsBlockquote'data-author="irishock" data-cid="2340148" data-time="1358223520">
Over pay for Edler in free agency.

Agreed. Would far rather explore this route than give up a ton for Yandle or Bouwmeester. I think Edler is better than both anyways.

    Holland has only traded two roster players since 2002

    <blockquote class='ipsBlockquote'data-author="The Axe" data-cid="2340133" data-time="1358219306">
No Parise. No Suter. Holland should have made these happen.

Holland did all he could. They chose not to come to Detroit. How is that his fault?

    Wings give Mike Knuble a tryout

Drew is extremely valuable to the penalty kill (even more with Eaves out) and has shown the ability to chip in offensively.

I don't think anyone would argue Miller > Knuble if we're talking player vs. player straight up...

As I said too, I wouldn't want him just given a spot, but I wouldn't mind him getting a 2-way and getting a chance to earn a roster spot over Emmerton... Especially come playoff/injury time...

Definitely agree. I don't know how much Knuble has left to offer, but it's still probably more than Emmerton.

    Wings give Mike Knuble a tryout

    I wouldn't want Knuble playing over Miller. Drew is extremely valuable to the penalty kill (even more with Eaves out) and has shown the ability to chip in offensively.

    Wings give Mike Knuble a tryout

    Odds are highly stacked against Knuble to make the team, but it's cool the Red Wings are giving him a shot. I think if we wanted basically a powerplay specialist, could have just brought Homer back. There's a glut at forward and besides maybe Emmerton, there's no one I would want Knuble to take a spot ahead.

    2013 BlueAdams Where Are You, Line Thread

    Franzen, no. However, I would gladly take Nyquist right now over Bertuzzi to play with Datsyuk in a hypothetical scenario.

    Red Wings 2013 schedule

    I don't think all teams will be equally tired. It is a huge advantage to never have to leave your own time zone like all of the Eastern Conference teams, except for Winnipeg. The grind of the shortened regular season will be taxing, but not having to travel extensively like the Red Wings do helps quite a bit. Four trips out west in practically three months (when it is usually spread out over six months) is rough.

    Red Wings 2013 schedule

    St. Louis and Columbus five teams each, if I counted correctly. That many trips out west in such a short time frame is pathetic and unfair. Back-to-back games in Anaheim? What an excellent idea. I understand it's tough to get the schedule done given the circumstances, but I can't imagine it turning out much worse for the Red Wings than it did.
