I am a little concerned loading up the top line with the two best forwards on the team. I understand the idea of playing Pavel and Z together, especially in a short season where you can have them shoulder even more of the load. However, it leaves your second line with uncertainty. What will Franzen's effort level be like? Can Filppula carry a line and still produce offensively at center? I could see that line not clicking at all and then we are quickly back to splitting up Datsyuk and Zetterberg. The bottom-six is very strong. I would prefer to see Miller - Helm - Cleary and then Bertuzzi - Abdelkader - Tootoo instead because I like Helm and Miller's chemistry and think that fourth line combination would be very effective. This team has a glut at forward and you have to wonder when that leads to a trade for some help on defense. Brunner might be the wild card in all of this. Playing with Pavel and Z is a great opportunity and if he produces, it will be a huge boost to a relatively weak top-six in terms of pure goal scorers.

I need a prayer answered, please.....no toot-toot whistles.

Please no. Let's try to continue not doing anything that resembles the Nashville fan base. -
Seven games against the division is a really horrible idea for 82 games, let alone for only 48. Over half of the games against the same teams? That's going to get old quite fast and it favors teams in weaker divisions, which the Central certainly is not. You could be in the Northwest or Southeast and just stockpile points there playing against inferior teams so often. Can't wait to see Columbus and Nashville 14 times in three months. The only positive for the Red Wings is the travel, but they will still end up going to Western Canada and California once while the East goes nowhere the entire season.

Lower the ticket prices, like was promised after the last lockout and never happened. I'm already bitter and can just attend Tigers games for a heck of a lot less money anyways.
-
I don't see how the Red Wings are the 6th best team in the league based on last season and the loss of Lidstrom. I would be hard pressed to say they are in the top six in the West alone.
-
What a career. Just brilliant hand-eye coordination and played his role in front of the crease better than anyone. I can't believe his body held up well enough as long as it did to continue playing. Truly a warrior and a major piece to the Red Wings having four championships. Thanks for the memories, Homer. Damn, I hate losing all of these guys that we have lately.

Zetterberg named Captain, 36th Captain in Red Wings History

Congrats to Z! Certainly well deserved and a worthy successor to Nick. Tough shoes to fill following Stevie and Nick, but Z has earned it with his work ethic and taking on a leadership role through the years. I like either Cleary or Filppula getting the third "A" if they continue to rotate. -
Franzen - Datsyuk - Nyquist Filppula - Z - Samuelsson/Brunner Miller - Helm - Cleary Bertuzzi - Abdelkader - Tootoo The top six is weak. Potential to be better depending on the development of Nyquist and production from Brunner. Like others, I have no clue where to put Samuelsson on this roster. He doesn't do anything worthy of playing in the bottom six. The forward group is deep; just severly lacking a goal-scoring winger. Kronwall - Ericsson Quincey - White Smith - Colaiacovo This might be a minority opinion here, but I trust E more than White. Rather have Ericsson out there against an opponent's top line than White. White wasn't good without Lidstrom and stuggles to get the puck out of the zone because of his size. Ideally, Smith makes a huge leap and jumps into the top four taking some pressure off the uncertainty that comes from both Ericsson and Quincey logging more minutes. Defense is in deep trouble with injuries. There's no depth in this group at all.
-
The defense worries me a lot. Smith practically has to be ready right away for top-four minutes. Colaiacovo was the depth signing and he's hurt already. Would have been nice to sign someone like Bryan Allen instead of putting all the eggs in the Suter basket.

I was very angry at first when the lockout started, then it turned to not caring. Now I'm excited to see hockey. I still hate the fact a lockout had to occur (again), but I'm not going to hold it against the Red Wings organization, nor the players -- the reason we all watch the sport. However, the leadership on both sides of this ordeal needs to be examined (by examined, I mean removed) as they failed miserably. Can't wait to be back at the Joe! Let's all talk about how Sammy shouldn't be on the point now.
-
Yeah, why would the Red Wings buyout Sammy? If they didn't want him, they could have just not signed him six months ago.
-
Filppula - Zetterberg - Hossa Yes, please. Our top-six would go from aging and mediocre to aging but very talented with Hossa back.
-
I'm very confident Franzen will not be bought out by the Red Wings. Nor should he, really. He's still the best goal scorer on a team lacking them.
-
The man gave his heart and soul to the Red Wings organization for two decades. Everything about Nick's character alone makes this suggestion unrealistic and selfish. Enjoy retirement, #5.

NHL submits offer to NHLPA - **Suspension Warning Post #70 & #273*
GoWings1905 replied to Jedi's topic in General
Please not more teams in the playoffs. They have already watered down the best event in sports with forced parity. -
Franzen embellishes too. I do wish the NHL would try and clean up the diving. It has become soccer-like embarrassing from certain players and teams lately.

I still need to see it confirmed before I'm getting excited. Nobody messes things up better than the NHL. -
Report: If season is saved, Columbus and Winnipeg swap for realignment

To be fair, the Rangers always had far more to offer than the Red Wings. Don't think the Blue Jackets ultimately got enough in exchange, but the price would have been higher for Detroit anyways. -
Kronwall, 31 years old a) Is he a #1, #2 or #3 defensemen on a cup contender? I think Kronwall has the potential to be a #1. Right now I would say he's a very good #2, but I need to see how he does with his biggest role yet to deem him a true #1 d-man. b) Will he play better or worse with more overall ice time? He had been gradually getting more ice time while Lidstrom was getting older, so Kronwall should adapt just fine to maybe 25+ minutes per game. c) Is he worth his current contract (4.75 mil cap hit, 6yrs)? Yes, for sure. I would even call it a steal. d) Predict his stats for an 82 game season 13 goals, 28 assists for 41 points and hopefully many Kronwalled moments. Filppula, 28 years old a) Has he reached his prime? I would like another season of consistent offensive production before declaring his prime, but Fil sold me a lot as a player last year. b) Predict the economics of his next contract 5 years/21 million c) Would you offer him the above contract Depends on his follow-up to last season. Most likely, yes. d) Should he play on Datsyuk's wing, Zetterberg's wing or center his own line? I think Fil would do well with either, but Z to start because it worked. e) Predict his stats for an 82 game season 19-45-64 Howard, 28 years old a) Is he a top 10, top 15 or top 20 goaltender? Top 15 no doubt and somewhere close to being in the top 10. b) Will his play suffer from the loss of Lidstrom to retirement? Jimmy's numbers will certainly suffer because the defense as a unit is much weaker without Nick. c) Predict the economics of his next contract 4 years/16 million d) Would you offer him the above contract Depends on the circumstances. The Red Wings have always spent more on defenseman instead of goalies, though you wonder how much that will change in the future. If there's an elite goalie to be had, I would have to consider that option at the time.

The Red Wings won their series against Chicago in five games and had to turn around and play a back-to-back in the finals. When has that ever happened?
-
Come on. That hardly compares to Tomas Kopecky enforcing with his face.
-
Datsyuk (signed for 2 more seasons), 34 years old A) Is he still one of the top players in the league at age 34-35? Yes, definitely. I think his offensive numbers are being held back by his linemates recently. His creativity and defense are still stellar. B) Will he re-sign with the Red Wings after his contract expires? Yes, though I don't feel confident in this. C) Will Datsyuk's injuries do equal damage with Yzerman's, near the end of his tenure? Stevie's knee injury was so significant and damaging. Hopefully Pavel doesn't have to endure anything that hampers the end of his career in that fashion. D) How much longer can he play at a high level? 3-4 years E) Predict the economics of his next contract, if there is one. 2 years/11 million Zetterberg (signed until 2021), 32 years old A) Is Zetterberg a top 10, top 20, or top 30 player in the NHL? I think probably closer to 30. My opinion is that Z's back really affects his offensive output and he's also evolved into more of a setup man centering his own line. His defense is underrated because Pavel is so flashy, but Z is just as solid. Continues to be the best player on the ice for the Red Wings in the playoffs. B) Should he play on Datsyuk's wing more or should he center his own line? Due to the structure of the roster, Z has to center his own line. Not enough talent in the top-six right now to load up with the two best forwards. C) Will he play better, worse or at the same level as the captain of the team? Same level. Z is a natural leader -- being the captain won't change his play. D) How much longer can he play at a high level? His back issues scare me. No way he finishes out his contract, but I'm hoping for close to five more years of strong production. His work ethic will help in this regard. E) If he plays until the end of his contract, does his jersey go on the rafters? I want to say yes as Z is my favorite player. However, using the Red Wings standards, I'm gonna have to vote no. Franzen (signed until 2020), 33 years old A) As the most polarizing player on the team, do you like him or hate him? I don't hate Franzen as he is a member of the Red Wings. That being said, "like" wouldn't be the appropriate term either. B) Can he still produce close to or over 30 goals at age 33? 30 is about his threshold and that's only if he stays healthy and appears relatively interested. C) Is he worth his contract? The length of the contract is the part I despise. D) Would you void his contract if an amnesty-like clause is introduced in the new CBA? Absolutely not. As much as Franzen frustrates me, where are the Red Wings going to replace his goal-scoring from? This team has lacked a legitimate sniper since Hossa left and Franzen's floating is the closest thing on the team to that. E) Should he be on Datsyuk's wing or Zetterberg's wing Datsyuk seems like the obvious choice, but the two have just never meshed all that well. Franzen showed more chemistry playing with Z during previous playoff runs. Filppula really clicked with Z last season, so maybe we keep forcing the Franzen/Datsyuk combination.
-
Exactly. Lidstrom had just gotten speared in the junk as well. I'm pretty sure Ericsson was hurt too and he was actually playing terrific during that postseason.
-
I'm sticking with no season, which has been my stance since the original joke offer the NHL made. I have no confidence we will see hockey.
