    Hawkeytown? ...barf.

Maybe the Wings can tank for years to get those high-end prospects. That cap era comment doesn't even make sense either. You do realize the Red Wings have been the best team in the league still since the cap was put in place?

Agreed completely. Losing Maggs just ended any prayer the Tigers had at winning the division. Cabrera may not see another strike this season. I don't want to give up young prospects when the Tigers have a TON of salary coming off the books this winter to address the glaring issues on the left side of the infield and at catcher. Adding Ted Lilly or Mike Lowell isn't going to get the Tigers into the playoffs at this point. Let's see what guys like Larish, Worth, Sizemore, Avila can do with some playing time and if they can become a part of the future.

    Wings should sign Paul Kariya

I honestly don't see Kariya being an ideal complement for either Hank or Pavel. Our top six is just fine. Kariya isn't better than anyone the Red Wings have now.

Maggs Can't wait until 87-year-old Guillen with his constant "injuries" is gone.

Remembering Derian Hatcher's tenure with Detroit

Well, I'm glad Hatcher has fonder memories of his time here than I do. Game 6 in Calgary, 2004. Hard to forget that disaster.

    Wings should sign Paul Kariya

I know the OP asked for reasons why not to sign Kariya, but I can't think of a good reason FOR the Red Wings to sign Kariya. He doesn't provide anything this team needs. Our top six is set and he sure as hell isn't cut to play in the bottom six with his diving and complete lack of grinding ability. Signing Kariya makes no sense when considering what the Red Wings already have in place on their roster.

Possibly, but I think that's the overriding issue with this team: they are too inconsistent to seriously contend. 7-8-9 in the order is a disaster, the starting pitching is very erratic as Verlander is the only reliable starter, the defense is terrible and they can't win a damn game away from Comerica. If Verlander isn't pitching and Maggs-Cabrera-Boesch aren't providing all or most of the offense, the Tigers look very bad. I wish it was inconsistency, however I feel it's more likely the Tigers are exactly what we are seeing right now: a borderline .500 team in a weak division.

Average, very very average. Pretty much what I expected from the Tigers this season, but somewhat disappointing because they have looked so much better at times. The Twins are going to win the Central again and I'm not sure the Tigers are even better than the White Sox when they cool off. I just hope Dombrowski sees this team for what it truly is. I usually advocate for "win now" no matter what, but this team has too many flaws and the trade deadline isn't going to fix all of them. I don't want to see high-end prospects traded away for a piece that probably won't even result in the Tigers making the playoffs. We need a catcher, shortstop, another left-handed bat off the bench and an established starter to the rotation too. Fix it in the off-season with the loads of cap space opened up from the bad contracts and come back stronger for it. This was always a "transition while trying to contend" season for the Tigers anyways.

Red Wings Making Play for Modano

Babcock's comment about getting 100 points was great. Not at all crazy about two years for Modano, but if it helps achieve a championship 11 months from now then it's all good.

    Remaining Free Agents

What? You didn't expect the higher seed and team with more points to outplay the Red Wings at times in a playoff series? And that youth for the Coyotes was really impressive in Game 7 on their home ice. The Red Wings are old argument went out-of-style a decade ago.

Red Wings Making Play for Modano

Ehh I wasn't too high on signing Modano to begin with so this delay and interest from other teams is fine with me. Hopefully it ends soon so the Red Wings can address getting a 6th d-man, which is more of a need than Modano anyways. I'm pretty sure the Red Wings are going to make the playoffs with or without Mike Modano. And his signing here is definitely not going to be the factor that puts the Red Wings over the top for the Stanley Cup next season.

Huge series this weekend for the Tigers. Hopefully JV gets it started well tonight. That being said, everyone else is playing for second if/when the Yankees get Cliff Lee. They absolutely will have just bought their repeat with Lee added to that starting rotation.

    Remaining Free Agents

I'd love Mitchell, but he's still probably well out of the Red Wings price range. I prefer Jay McKee to replace Lilja as the 6th d-man.

I hate San Jose, but this is wonderful. Welcome back, Central Divison throne.

Wow, they think Kane is already top two in American-born players EVER? Right on... their columnists are as delusional as their fans.

    RUMOR: Wings sign Modano

I really, really dislike the two-year deal if that part is true. I don't understand what the point of adding a second year is if Modano is already contemplating retirement THIS summer. I am not going to call it a bad move as it is premature still, but two years would be a mistake.

Red Wings Making Play for Modano

I am still not really sold on the whole Modano to the Red Wings thing, but I am getting really bored with nothing happening so this would add some excitement for the summer. It sure as hell better only be a one-year deal if it goes down.

TSN: Discussion of Modano To Wings

I feel the same way. While I wouldn't be completely opposed to the Red Wings signing Modano, I am leaning more towards hoping it doesn't happen right now. Modano doesn't fit what the Red Wings need this summmer, nor does he fall under the category of what Ken Holland said was going to be addressed. We don't need another center. Neither Abdelkader nor Helm should be playing the wing at the expense of Modano. I would rather have a physical, bottom pairing d-man and then maybe go out and sign a gritty 4th liner with the remaining money. The Red Wings have a logjam at forward as it is and I am really not willing to lose Ritola or Miller over a one-year-run for a 40-year-old Mike Modano.

    Willie Mitchell

Mitchell would be my first choice to replace Lilja. I love the way he plays the game when healthy. That being said, even with his injury history, Mitchell is probably well out of the Red Wings price range. Especially with some of the contracts being handed out already.
  22. GoWings1905

    Lilja likely gone

Completely agree. If nothing else, this free agent class offers many possible replacements to take over Lilja's role in the same price range. I like Lilja, but I'm not going to lose sleep over our third pairing d-man leaving. Holland will find a suitable player to fill the spot, hopefully someone like McKee or Boynton. I would love Willie Mitchell, but he's way out of the price range of the Red Wings.

    Lilja May Test Market

Lilja is not even anywhere close to Stuart defensively. I like Lilja, but I sure as hell wouldn't want him playing 20-25 minutes per game like Stuart does.
