I'm not calling this team a championship contender, but they are leaps and bounds improved from a season ago. Jimmy has played very well, the defense has outperformed expectations so far too. The lack of offense is definitely a concern, though. I gotta say I'm enjoying watching the Red Wings far more than I anticipated after the awful off-season. They compete hard, never quit in games and play fast. Again, they certainly have flaws, but they do a lot of things well to their credit. Get Pav back, hopefully Mantha is in Detroit before long and ya never know. I do hope Kenny uses some of the surplus in prospects at Grand Rapids to address the glaring needs and give the Wings a better shot at winning now while also keeping most of the major pieces in play for the future.

Beyond the goals, they are pinning themselves in the zone with turnovers. The result is fortunately it has not ended up in the net. Like I said, I'm not picking on them because it's Quincey and Kindl. Just don't think it has been a good night for either of them.

Both have been mostly fine before tonight, but this has been more of the nightmarish Kindl/Quincey showing that we expected.

Is that truly your only barometer of success? I think the original point was well taken -- Stevie has complemented his drafting with good moves in free agency and trades. Kenny "kicks tires" and mostly fails, but defaults to then saying building through the draft is the way to go anyways. You need balance to build a contender. Especially when you draft mid-to-late first round for two decades.

Can we put to sleep the Glendening shutdown center myth that was never an actual thing? Stamkos is dominating that line every single shift. Babs needs to stop playing that line so much. They can't match up with elite forwards.

Gudas went for Franzen's knees after the puck got dumped in. Which one is the coward? Not a fan of the drop pass on the PP unless it goes to Datsyuk. Everyone else is stationary and you get too much traffic at the blue line to enter cleanly.

Who said anything about ties? 3-on-3 is very rarely going to result in a tie after five minutes.For the record, I do like ties better than the skills competition for the extra point.

Cleary actually looks respectable. His skating is light years better than last season. He has been forechecking hard and physical.

The defense chipping in is certainly a nice way to alleviate the goal-scoring concerns. Terrible first five minutes, but the remainder of the period was good.
