When Bettman was "hailed as a genius in the early 90s when he basically robbed ESPN for a huge deal to broadcast the NHL", it was rightly so. The early 90s was when hockey was considered to be a bona-fide top four sport in the U.S., and ranked above the NBA in many camps (and not necessarily hockey camps) and had the popularity to prove it. ESPN helped establish the visibility and mainstream success of the sport. The majority of things that Bettman has done since have worked against the success of the NHL.

I hear you. That is why I said that Versus is certainly better than nothing. Also, Versus is not really to blame for the NHL's problems (although their coverage is another story). I just feel that a web of questionable decisions has dragged the NHL down. Not being on a visible, national, well-appreciated sports-dedicated network (i.e. ESPN) is a marketing blunder that Bettman and his lackeys seem unwilling to undo.

My initial feeling is: NO WAY! But, then again stranger things have happened. I only see Yzerman going somewhere else if he feels that he can't get anywhere within the Wings' management. I think that Holland et al. are smart enough to keep this from happening.

Unless there is a strong indication that Sundin will be more than a rental, he is not worth giving up any core players or top prospects for, IMHO.

During Z's time away, I have also noticed that Dats and Flip work really well together. Flip reminds me a lot of Z before the lockout. Z and Dats always had good chemistry, so maybe that is why Dats and Flip seem to have it also. As for Cleary, I see his role as being somewhat more similar to Homer's role...although they are certainly different, they both bring grit and scoring potential. For some reason, though, I always felt that Cleary fit better with Z than with Dats as center. I have seen a few times where Cleary was standing around watching Dats and trying to figure out where the hell he should be on the play. With Z he seems to fit more naturally. So here's my combinations (just my opinion, for whatever little it's worth): Flip-Dats-Homer Cleary-Hank-somebody somebody = whoever Babs feels good about on the line, probably Hudler, but could be Franzen, Sammy, or someone else. Thoughts?

I'm surprised that no one has made a wise crack about most of the autograph seekers being other teams' opposing forwards. After all, they are Lilja's biggest fans...at least according to about half of LGW members.

...which is exactly why Toronto would be an excellent choice. Imagine either UofM stadium or Comerica filled to capacity (and then some) with a 50/50 mix of screaming fans of rival teams. Obviously the goal of the outdoor classic is to be a major ticket sales event and big ratings success. If the NHL is smart, they will use geography and rivalry to full advantage. ...not that we can count on the NHL to be smart.

I agree that if it's in Detriot, it should be against either Chicago or Toronto. We need to play someone who is close enough for visiting team fans to show up, and someone good enough (or rival enough) to be of interest. TO and Chi-town are the only good options, IMHO. I am not so keen on playing in Ann Arbor. Ann Arbor is not Detroit. They should play in Comerica Park.
