2007 Photoshop War: Red Wings vs. Ducks

Funny song, very creative...seemed a little strange, though, having the sens mascot singing a song about the sen not having a chance. I guess I would have been too hard to have a talking Buffalo.

Yeah, I'm sure that all of the jokes about being a "Mickey Mouse" organization started getting pretty old.

    Redwings flashback: 2002

Since the Wings are in round 3 for the first time since the cup-winning 2002 season, perhaps it is time for a stroll down memory lane... Where were you during the Wings' game 7 blowout victory vs the Avs in the 2002 WCF? Me: Watching the game at Snookers Pool & Pub on Woodward Ave in Royal Oak. How about you?

This is the Wing I miss most

It's hard to say. Dino was never a particularly good skater. With the speed of the post-lockout game, he (at least in the form that he was in with the Wings) would probably struggle to keep up. On the other hand, though, skating was never a big part of his game (kinda like Homer). Also, consider that Dino played many of his prime years in the 80s, when the style was very open and free-wheeling. If anything, it could be argued that Dino (as he was in his prime) might have fared better in today's NHL than in the pre-lockout trap era. As for size, you're right that Homer can deal with a level of abuse that Dino probably could not...one thing that Dino excelled at, however, was looking like he was getting mauled and drawing a penalty. As far as comparing him to Homer: Drawing opposition penalties: Dino>>>Homer Scoring off rebounds: Dino>Homer Scoring off deflections: Dino>>Homer (Dino was ridiculous at this) Size/strength: Homer>>>Dino Pest factor: Dino>Homer Checking/physical play: Homer>>Dino Skating ability: Dino=Homer=pretty lousy Just my 2 cents...feel free to disagree

This is the Wing I miss most

Kocur was definately great to have on the team! There are a lot of guys I miss: Konstantinov ...pretty obvious one there! Federov ...loved watching him completely undress people on an end-to-end rush Fischer ...the guy was awesome in the 2002 cup run, had all the potential in the world to become a dominant D-man Coffey ...I remember when he was paired with Lids on the powerplay, it was lights out! Murphy ...formed a very solid pair with Lids on D for both the '97 and '98 cups Kozlov ...always seemed to be able to skate into a crowd of guys twice his size and skate out with the puck untouched. Also, he was clutch in the playoffs. Dino ...maybe the only guy who was better in front of the net than Homer.

    Redwings flashback: 2002

Sorry for bumping this post back to the top, but I've been getting such a kick out of reading these!!! To add a little detail: not only was I watching the game at Snookers, but I was there to play pool with a cute girl that I knew...she was a little unhappy that I was paying more attention to the game than to her!

Burnside on the Wings, post-Yzerman and Shanahan

Although I love Yzerman and Shanny, and consider them to have been the face of the franchise for such a long time, I must admit that there is some truth to this article. For all of Stevie's heart and determination, it was painful for me to watch him play during the post-2002 pre-retirement stretch. He was a shadow of the player that I remember him as. I know that it wasn't like he was depriving anyone of much playing time, but still, he casts a long shadow and in some ways may have prevented the next generation from assuming the level of responsibility needed to take the team to the next level. I know that Stevie Y would have never wanted to hold the team back and always wanted to be the best player on the ice, but there comes a day when you have to hang up the skates. Although Shanny still puts up good numbers, the same is true to some extent with him. When young players are used to defering leadership and accountability to the old guard, they cannot really develop into the players that they could be.
  12. This bar in Paris might show the game: http://www.mooseheadparis.com/ You'll have to tolerate all of the Habs paraphenalia hanging on the walls, but it's a great place to hang out.

    Giggy or Briz

A change in net at this point would be a total panic button move. There's about a 95% chance that Jiggy gets the start.

    Lowering Ourselves

I am sorry if you feel that you haven't gotten a fair shake from Wings fans here, but: 1) We are, by and large, diehard Wings fans. We won't agree with you on everything. Many of us do know our hockey. 2) There are a few "homers" on here who are blinded by our love for our team, but most of us are reasonable fans who want to have interaction with other hockey fans and will treat you with respect, provided that you don't try to goad us into some kind of flame war. 3) I have not really followed your earlier posts, but something about your tone in this post comes off as rather confrontational and peevish. 4) Sadly, a lot of fans in traditional hockey cities don't give much respect to teams located in the sun belt. It is (perhaps unfairly) a knee-jerk reaction to assume that fans there are noobish about the game. 5) If you come here with a good-natured attitude, you will (I hope) be treated in kind. If you come here with an axe to grind, things might turn ugly.

    Lowering Ourselves

The occasional good-natured ribbing (or "trash talking") can be a fun part of the LGW experience. However, it doesn't take much for it to go over into the category of flame war and name calling. One thing I really loved about the Sharks fans here is that they (for the most part) had a sense of humor and were here to talk hockey and get some enjoyment out of the rivalry without letting things get out of hand. Lately, though, a few threads have gotten ugly. A witty and classy retort will put a idiot poster in his place better than any name calling ever will.

    Lowering Ourselves

Excellent point. Not only should this post not be deleted, it should maybe even be pinned to serve as a reminder that (minus the obvious trolls) all visitors to LGW are first and foremost hockey fans! Considering the first rate organization that the Red Wings are, Wings fans should follow the example that our team has set.

    All Wings, No Prayer

Good article. It makes it's point pretty well and avoids the Homerism that is all too common in the local sports media. Wings fans take note, however, this Ducks team might be down, but they are far from out. The Wings need to put out a complete performance like game 3 at least a couple more times before this series is done.

    Babcock's line shuffling was brilliant.

Well, there's a lot more to it than simply "mix" and "roll". It requires a lot of insight, creativity, and cleverness to get it right, not to mention being able to read and anticipate the other team's plans. Babcock is adpet at mixing and rolling. Bowman was masterful at it. Lewis got it wrong as often as he got it right. My problem with Lewis is that he seemingly would get fixated on questionable ideas that didn't pan out. For instance against Calgary in '04, he insisted on putting the Grind Line out against Iginla's line. The concept was that Draper and Maltby would shut down Iginla and therefore shut down the Flames. Although Iginla was somewhat contained by this stategy, the Wings offence disappeared...most likely because the Grind Line was on the ice way too much. If he had come up with a more balanced set of lines that could have matched up well against any of Calgary's lines and rolled them, the outcome might have been better.

    Babcock's line shuffling was brilliant.

I must admit, those are some nice line combinations. I remember a big issue in '05-'06 was Datsyuk's apparent lack of chemistry with anyone not named Hank. I see Filppula as the kind of linemate that would complement Dats really well. It's a combination that I'd like to see more of. Having Homer on the same line makes sense too: Homer has played with Dats a lot this season and Homer brings the grit and garbage goal-scoring ability that the other two can use to their advantage. As for Franzen-Zetts-Sammy... all three are Swedes and all three can play a sound two-way game...and playing with Franz and Zetts will only make Sammy look better. And as for Bert-Lang-Cleary... Cleary can serve as an example of how not to be lazy and suck! Sorry, couldn't resist. Seriously, though, this line combination has a lot of potential.

Conn Smythe winner if Wings win the Cup?

Although it's WAAAY too early to be discussing this... I think that Homer has a chance if he plays a few more games like game 3 against the Ducks. Otherwise, at this point I would rank the candidates like this: 1) Lidstrom 2) Hasek 3) Datsyuk 4) Zetterberg Of course, we need to actually make it to the finals and win against the eastern team before we have any real chance at anything.
