    10/22 GDT: Red Wings 4, Blues 3

Thanks for the clarification. It all happened pretty fast, and I wasn't sure if Lids was in deep before or after the puck. Bad play on his part at any rate. I guess he can't be perfect all the time.

    Hossa #18?

Did you order a #5 Lindstrom jersey too?

Oops!! hahaha... sorry. You might want to ask for a refund. Or at least a discount.

    10/22 GDT: Red Wings 4, Blues 3

Quick question: on the Blues' goal where Lids got caught deep... I know that a Wings' powerplay had just expired and a guy jumped out of the box to join the rush, essentially making it a 3 on 1 break... Did anyone notice if Conks had warned the team of penalty expiration by slapping the ice with his stick? It seems strange that Lids would get caught very deep in the zone in that situation. I remember noticing him between the left circle and the goal line looking for a pass. My immediate thought was, "Wow, Lids sure is deep, he must be anticipating something". Then not even two seconds later it's a break the other way.

Conklin was huge early on? He made some pretty big saves in the late minutes too that kept the game from being tied. Despite giving up 3 goals and having a mediocre 0.875 SV%, I'd say that Conks was one of the Wings' better players tonight. Otherwise, agree totally. Sammy seems to mesh well with Mule and Z. Another thought: Dats looked good, and Hossa actually looked like he might be starting to gel with him a bit.

You'd think that Oshie will be the next Ovechkin the way the Blues' announcers talk about him...

    Giving up too many goals

One thing that we can take solice in is the fact that despite the Wings looking pretty ordinary, they managed to be 3-1-1. Once they wake up and start playing like the team we all know and love, life will be rosey again. Certainly the Wings have some adjustments to make... and they will make them... in the mean time we should all realize that things could be far worse.

A case for #91 in the rafters?

As long as we're discussing old-timers, how about Jack Stewart: 1) three-time first team and two-time second team all-star on defense 2) key contributor to Wings' cups in 1943 and 1950 3) Inducted into Hall of Fame in 1964 4) considered one of the most punishing defensemen of his era 5) Rated #97 in The Hockey News' top 100 players of all time. Not as much of a case for him as with Goodfellow, and also didn't play all of his best years for the Wings, but still a case could be made.

A case for #91 in the rafters?

That's a typo on my part. I typed 1940 and should have typed 1943. I fixed the typo. Thanks. As for the player-coach info, I got it from here: click here Perhaps the Wings had both a coach and a "player-coach" at that time, although that seems a bit strange. Anyone with more information?

A case for #91 in the rafters?

Why doesn't anyone make a case for Ebbie Goodfellow? 1) Played only for Detroit (1929-1943) 2) Won Hart trophy in 1940 3) Was a first team all-star on multiple occasions 4) Was a key player on Detroit's Stanley cup wins in 1936, 1937, and 1943. 5) Was the last NHL player to win the cup as a player-coach in 1943, after which he retired. 6) Hall of Famer since 1963. Probably because no one remembers him. Edit: corrected a fact, Wings won in 1943, not 1940.

Conklin to make Red Wings debut

So, you're predicting Ozzie to start 62 games? That seems a bit much to me. Personally, I'd like Ozzie to start only 50-55.

10/9 GDT: Maple Leafs 3, Red Wings 2

Well, The Leafs did play back to back preseason games against the Wings about a week ago. I couldn't think of a better time to scout out a team. Preseason Wings vs Leafs: 2-0-0 Regular Season Wings vs Leafs: 0-1-0

    Where's Bud Lynch?

I'm not sure what the deal is... I heard Bud Lynch's voice for calling the last minute of the 2nd period, but someone else called the Franzen goal.

    Cherry's At It Again...

Although a few of the things above I maybe can't debate too much, I am firmly of the belief that Cherry is completely off his rocker.

    Visiting Detroit

Marriot Renaissance is a very nice hotel. It is part of the Renaissance Center complex at the heart of Detroit. It is right on the river overlooking Hart Plaza and the Windsor skyline. The Winsdor-Detroit tunnel (goes under the river) is right next to the RenCen (as it is called locally). You are about a five minute walk from the Joe (a very safe five minutes at that). Although I would be at least somewhat on guard walking anywhere in Detroit, you could draw about a 1 km circle around the RenCen where the chances of anything bad happening to you are fairly low. My office is about two blocks from your hotel, so I know the area pretty well. You are also a short walk to Greektown (or very short people mover ride, goes from RenCen directly to Trapper's alley/Greektown Casino), which is a decent area for food, drink, gambling, etc. It is quite a drive to get from Ford field (downtown) to The Palace (Auburn Hills, outer suburbs), but assuming that the game at Ford takes 3 hours, I would assume that you should be able to reach Auburn Hills with time to spare. To get there get on I-375 North in the city, which merges with I-75 North after a few miles. I-75 passes very close to The Palace. If you are coming from Canada via Windsor, I would recommend crossing at the tunnel. You will end up exiting literally in the shadow of the RenCen. If you take the Ambassador Bridge, you will potentially end up in a shady area unless you get directly on the Highway (I-75, which is under constuction near the bridge and may make things tricky, especially for a visitor).

Lidstrom has broken nose - out next 3 games

It has been reported that the puck was confronted by Draper after the hit. The puck apologized profusely and was seen hugging Draper and others after the game.
