True they are generalizations but they are based on facts. Retiree overhead has been the majority of GM's red. Enough that they negotiated with the UAW to alleviate some of the costs from GM. SUV, trucks, and minivans (forgot about minivans) were the bread and butter for Detroitauto until the gas spike. Cutting cost was my injection because instead of consolidating or sharing among divisions each division did it's own thing too much. (Did we really need 5/6 different versions of the Trailblazer in the same model year?) Now since we're continuing with the generalizations: outside of the higher end cars (full size or sports) the big three have been a day late and a dollar short on cars. Hopefully the new Malibu will change that but I doubt it. It's not GM's style.

Retiree overhead has alot to do with Detroitauto running in the red as well. You have to cut costs somewhere and for most of the 80s and 90s it was in their cars. Couple that to the fact that SUVs and trucks became their bread and butter during that time...
