I like the line about "my cottage in Ireland... County Crap..." I found this commercial a couple of weeks ago: (One of the posters under the comments added this about it: "Little trivia info - during one of the wide shots of Shanahan taking a shot and Granger is in net, Shanahan ACTUALLY hit the apple off his head - it was with a "prop puck" which wasn't AS heavy as the real one.. but close enough... ")

Ask the Cleveland Cadavers... ehmm, I mean, Cavaliers... thier organization, their owners, their fans, the City of Cleveland, whether they agree. Ask the Spurs, who have achieved what is arguably one of the greatest sports dynasties of modern days tonight. For that matter, ask Mike Ilich.

I'm not eating anything. Our Detroit (metaphorically speaking, not geographically) has long had impatience when it comes to star players going through a dry spell or not living up to their new big buck contract. Fedorov, Shanahan, heck, even Stevie took some criticism. And let's not even go there where goalies are concerned. I always knew Dats had it in him, never a doubt. The only thing I may have, perhaps, worried about was, "does he have the team to back him up?" We expect SO much from our players, and it's probably because our players have consistently blessed us by playing their arses off-- this year especially. Remember? We had NO expectations this year. Rebuilding, yada etc. If next year does not surpass, or even merely live up to this one, I'll probably hate to be here (or any other online Wings forum or newsgroup)(or to read The Freep), because so much spoiled brat-tage will be spewn. But it won't be because we paid Dats too much.

He looks like David Letterman in that pic.

OK, thanks for the correction, because it makes more sense now. The camera showed 3 young boys but from what Rod said (didn't catch all the names), I did think he said that only one son was there-- I thought I misunderstood. WHOA!!! CAVS are UP!!!!!!
-
There should be a special award for him: the "I Survive Grapes Weekly." One more lovely mo was Brind'Amour mentioning his 3 sons and asking, "Would someone backstage please explain to my youngest why I won't buy him an Alex Ovechkin jersey to wear to my home games?" His son went red but grinned from ear to ear--- waaayyy too adorable for a hockey awards presentation, lurrvved it. Cavs getting swept.... *sigh* Poor LBJ. He's not only carrying his team on his back, but now he's got 3-4 Spurs on it as well. Hope he's got a good chiro/massage therapist.

QFT. If Scotty goes ANYWHERE (which I highly doubt will happen), it would be back to Buffalo. He lists his experience coaching there as a great regret (meaning he didn't get them a Cup) (looking for the quote online, SabreFriend told it to me earlier tonight). [hastily sez: Buffalo is ably coached by Lindy Ruff]

CBC just did a segment about this on the news following the NHL Awards. It was cautious, to put it mildly--implied that those pre-bought seats could easily turn out to be a bad investment (what they neglected to say, oddly, is that the money is in trust and will be refunded in the non-event).

Random Thoughts re the NHL Awards: 1) Sidney Crosby. Dude, I haven't seen an iller-fitting tux since RockitSon's freshman year rental for the Jr/Sr prom (what can I say, older women love him), and THAT was a Geoffrey Beene. I think Sid must have gotten his at Tuxes-R'nt-Us. 2) MacLean ruled, they should have him host the Oscars, so many burns and zingers did he have. Granted, he didn't write 'em, and granted, sometimes his delivery was a bit rushed, but whoaaa, was it ever topical and right on target. 3) Bettman sucks. 4) Pronger sucks. 5) #3 and #4 go without saying, but I just had to say it anyway, because they suck harder in formal wear.

Ladies and gentlemen, I give you the truly Oddest Couple of the Milennium: "Ed" and Larry Murphy! WTF?! ROFL, playing Nazareth's "Hair Of The Dog" while Nik walks up to accept the Norris. *doing happy dance all over again*
-
Nah, that's not shallow. $10K = deep.

Ehh, maybe it's just me and my weird way of thinking, but I believe LB's an honor. There's something very special about a player who can win this award: first, it means that he's at the top of his sport, and he got there without resorting to cheap shots, dirty play, or trash talk. Mind you, those are all things that make up this game, but I don't think the LB's anything to be scorned.

DATS. BAYBAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WHOO HOO! (prior family commitment prevented his appearace: per Kenny) (maybe he didn't want it anymore than did our own Cap'n OsGod)

What is your favorite Nicklas Lidstrom moment/play?
RedRockit replied to Salviaman's topic in General
Same feeling here. My best bud mentioned earlier this week that "Lidstrom is a bit overrated" (granted, she loathes the Wings, but is also a hockey fan first and foremost). I was stunned, and tried to give her my reasons why Nik is so great.... I couldn't come up with any one overwhelming thing, or any twelve things, for that matter. He just IS. He is (and has been for years) one of the major forces propelling the Wings into the wind. What I did tell my Wing-hata friend, is that: "You know how you respect Stevie Yzerman?" "Nik deserves the same respect." -
Missing the point re Eklund: It matters not his predicitons, matters much (to him, obviously) the hits on his site. He can say any absolutely eejit thing, and get a convo going about it on respected sites such as this. Laughs all the way to the bank, he is, for every hit that people like us make on his iste. Hockey parasite, On your peril, DO NOT GO THERE. Even mere curiosity-clicking lends a form of credence (albeit not much anymore), but worse, yer payin' this arsehole's bills when you click on his site.

There's going to be an erosion of population from MI (as it's been gradually eroding from Ohio-- all OH auto-based industry began heading south two decades ago. It's taken a while for MI, especially and obviously Detroit, to feel this burn). Completely playing devil's advocate (not a role I normally relish, but it's a useful one albeit), but... Let's see where the Wings are in 25 years.

Are you kidding? I even record the ESPYs for the 15 seconds of hockey they may show. (SOOO geek, I know)

Actually, Lions representation is not too shabby in NWO, either. The Infamous Modell Brownoutage contributed to a lot of littles growing up with their local loyalties going instead to the Lions. Barry Sanders' brilliance had much to do with that-- really, who cared if the Lions won or lost back then, as long as the chat at recess (or the water cooler) was an excited "Did you SEE that move he made on the safety?" This (the Browns loss) reminds me that the Storm is gone as well (as if I needed reminding). I dunno how Toledo will react when they come back. Given history, I'm concerned, even though the Sports Arena is as antiquated as all heck, but I do remember the abortive arena in Rossford. Yikes. (sorry for rambling so far away from the OT) Back OT: From another forum (non-sports, although this is from the Sports Forum on the site) that I frequent, this post from a highly respected member thereof, and one who is sports knowledgeable (though not a rabid hockey fan): "So I live on Southern California and there was ZERO sign or mention of a parade or celebration. Paris distracted any camera crew or copter if there was a Stanley Cup shindig. Maybe if the NHL gets a pic of Paris and the cup in prison..." *shrug* FWIW, this was just one man, one opinion. But an opinion that has been hit a few 10K times, and that ain't cool. It's the Butterfly Effect.

Wow... now THERE'S a stat for ya. *shakes head in bemusement* But that's Detroit for ya-- they should really recruit goalies from the personal ads in 'Masochist Monthly'.
