    My thoughts exactly. Weird.

    Retired Jerseys?

Good point and nice find. Ill stick with my 5-10 year window suggestion though. Retiring a jersey should be a sure thing. In my mind, if its debatable the number shouldnt go up.

    Retired Jerseys?

I get where your coming from on Kelly, but if you notice, all Detroits retired players were primarily Red Wings and I think it should remain that way. I think we hold that honor to higher standards than other organizations.

Gustav Nyquist-- Hockey's Future Prospect of the Month

Nice. He's been steadily climbing up our prospect ranks. Good to see.

    Retired Jerseys?

+ 1 on Red Kelly. Having your jersey retired should pretty much be for lifers with some exceptions. And great example of Fedorov. He was well on track to have his # retired. He was an important part of 3 Stanley Cup runs, phenomenal player. But hey, he left and lost out on that honor.

    Retired Jerseys?

I really dont know why Mike Illitch doesnt hang #6 back up, but I support his decision. I respectfully disagree with you. The way I see it, if those numbers arent retired now, they shouldnt be.

    Retired Jerseys?

Agreed. After players retire they should have a certain window to have their number retired. Example. 5-10 years. After that their chances should be done just because historically a players reputation tends to get better as they get older or as time passes. This should prevent Larry Aurie or Red Kellys number from being retired. I just dont think its right for the fans or management from this generation to retire a jersey based on what theyve heard or read, because they certainly havent seen more than highlights of that player or maybe a few games.

    Ryan Kesler

Someone brought up Ryan Kesler's name and contract up in another thread and it got me thinking. He is a RFA next year, and I was wondering if you guys think the Wings should try and sign him to an offer sheet. He is a Livonia native. I would suspect we could sign him for somewhere in the 3.5-4 mil range and hope Vancouver doesnt match. If they didnt match we would have to give up a 1st and 3rd round pick in next years draft. To me, this is a small price to pay for a 25 year old forward with the ability to score a point per game. To fit him under the cap we would obviously not have room for Jiri Hudler to come back which is fine with me. Kesler is alot better. Pavel Datsyuk ($6.700m) / Henrik Zetterberg ($6.083m) / * Ryan Kesler ($4.000m) Johan Franzen ($3.955m) / Valtteri Filppula ($3.000m) / Daniel Cleary ($2.800m) Kris Draper ($1.583m) / * Todd Bertuzzi ($1.500m) / * Tomas Holmstrom ($1.500m) * Darren Helm ($1.000m) / * Justin Abdelkader ($0.850m) / * Patrick Eaves ($0.750m) * Mattias Ritola ($0.511m) DEFENSEMEN Brian Rafalski ($6.000m) / * Nicklas Lidstrom ($4.000m) Brad Stuart ($3.750m) / Niklas Kronwall ($3.000m) * Andreas Lilja ($1.250m) / Jonathan Ericsson ($0.900m) Jakub Kindl ($0.883m) GOALTENDERS Chris Osgood ($1.417m) / Jimmy Howard ($0.717m) CAPGEEK.COM TOTALS ROSTER: 22; PAYROLL: $56.149m; CAP ROOM: $0.651m I realize this is wishful thinking. Vancouver is in good shape in terms of the cap and Kelser will be a top priority of theirs in the offseason. I just think its something the Wings should consider. Whats the worst that could happen?

    Retired Jerseys?

This. Datsyuk and Zetterberg obviously still have the potential to get their numbers retired, but they still have a lot left to accomplish.

Why is there so much love for Filppula on this board?

This is the quote that jumped out at me. "I always joke that you are exactly as good as your coach wants you to be, and I like to see him play more on the top two lines," Selanne said. "But he is patient guy, and he is waiting his turn. I know when he will get the chance, he will be ready." This season Flip hasnt had much time on the top 2 lines, and with Franzen out for as long as he has, Flip hasnt had a goal scoring winger on his side. I think playing with Zetterberg is a nice opportunity for Filppula to show something. I never really understood why Flip has been on the third line.

You'll get to see as soon as this upcoming offseason the hole Chicago dug themselves into by handing out ill advised contracts. Id be shocked if they make it to 3 cup finals, given the financial crisis they are in. The 2010-11 Chicago Blackhawks team will most likely be in worse shape than the 2009-10 Red Wings. Im just glad we have a smart GM that didnt follow a similar path of incompetence.
  14. wingsownnhl43

    Be the Blackhawks GM

He is a UFA after this season. He's making about 2.75 this year. I just dont see how they can bring him back unless he takes a significant pay cut. Haha I know. Tossing the numbers around, i just down see how they can get under the cap without buying those contracts out. I really am looking forward to see how they handle the offseason.

    Be the Blackhawks GM

Pretty much Im thinking theyll be in worse shape than we are this year unless someone gives them a gift from god and takes that Brian Campbell contract off their hands.

    Ryan Kesler

I think we are in a position to add even if Lidstrom comes back for a reduced price. Figuring we re-sign Lidstrom, Holmstrom, Lilja and Bertuzzi we have 4.6 mil in cap room with 1 spot to fill. Hudler is rumored to come back, but I don think the Wings brass should settle. If we can find a player at 4 million that we feel is a better fit than Hudler, then by all means, upgrade. Pavel Datsyuk ($6.700m) / Henrik Zetterberg ($6.083m) / Johan Franzen ($3.955m) Valtteri Filppula ($3.000m) / Daniel Cleary ($2.800m) / Kris Draper ($1.583m) * Todd Bertuzzi ($1.500m) / * Tomas Holmstrom ($1.500m) / * Darren Helm ($1.000m) * Justin Abdelkader ($0.850m) / * Patrick Eaves ($0.750m) / * Mattias Ritola ($0.511m) DEFENSEMEN Brian Rafalski ($6.000m) / * Nicklas Lidstrom ($4.000m) Brad Stuart ($3.750m) / Niklas Kronwall ($3.000m) * Andreas Lilja ($1.250m) / Jonathan Ericsson ($0.900m) Jakub Kindl ($0.883m) GOALTENDERS Chris Osgood ($1.417m) / Jimmy Howard ($0.717m) CAPGEEK.COM TOTALS ROSTER: 21; PAYROLL: $52.149m; CAP ROOM: $4.651m

    Ryan Kesler

I agree. How much would you offer a guy like Ladd?
  18. wingsownnhl43

    Ryan Kesler

I agree. My whole thing here is that I think this team might need a shake up and/or a fresh face. If you sign a Ryan Kesler, Nicklas Backstrom, or Bobby Ryan to an offer sheet, you really dont have much to lose. It's conceivable that a team will get frugal and let the player go. Those players are well worth the lost draft picks. I agree though, Ryan Kesler means too much to Vancouver. Additionally, Andrew Ladd is an RFA. If we can sign him to a contract that fits us, with 14 players signed and already over the cap, Chicago is in no position to match. This is something that should be considered as well.
  19. wingsownnhl43

    Ryan Kesler

Haha that made me laugh. And yeah, I agree. I dont expect to get Kesler at all. I just think that it is a route the Wings might want to consider. After coming off a rough season, and anticipating a new season with pretty much the same cast of characters we've had the past 3-5 seasons, a shake up might be in order. Going the RFA route, you dont have to move any key parts, just draft picks. And if you can get an up and coming star for a first and a third, I think its definitely worth it. Theres really nothing to lose by signing a future stud to an offer sheet. The worst that could happen is the other team matching the contract and you wind up right where you were before. Agreed. If we got Kesler, Id roll these lines Zetterberg - Datsyuk - Holmstrom Franzen - Kesler - Bertuzzi Cleary - Filppula - Helm Abdelkader - Draper - Eaves

Questions about potential next year's roster

I think its wishful thinking to expect Kyle Wellwood to sign here. Vancouver is in very good shape in terms of the cap, and at this point the Wings are in no better position to win the cup than the Canucks.

Why is there so much love for Filppula on this board?

I asked posters on this board to search capgeek to get an idea of how players who have similar cap hits are producing. If you conduct an extensive search you would find that Cleary and Filppula are not overpaid at all. There are better contracts out there, obviously. Id say for the most part however, that there are more contracts that a worse than better. You chose Ryan Kesler, who probably has one of the most cap friendly deals in the NHL. He is grossly underpaid. He is an RFA this season, lets wait and see the contract he gets. It will be significantly north of Cleary and Filppulsa cap figure and you know that. Ryan Kesler is a far better player than Clears. Maybe I posed the wrong question. But the point is, in comparison to the the rest of the NHL, they being paid just fine.

You obviously dont listen very well. Or read very well in this instance.

Why is there so much love for Filppula on this board?

It would be a very good lesson for a lot of posters on this forum to log onto capgeek.com and just scroll through teams salary charts just to get an idea about how much people are getting paid and how they are producing. Id like to know what players you guys would rather have than Filppula and Cleary at their cap hit, excluding young players on their rookie contract.

Why is there so much love for Filppula on this board?

Well his cap hit wasnt a problem for anyone last season. I think his cap hit is pretty reasonable for what he brings to the table.
