Fleury pursuing charges against Graham James
oldredbarnman replied to MacK_Attack's topic in General
After Sheldon Kennedy told his story, Don Cherry said on Coach's Corner, "They should've drawn and quartered the son of a *****". I wish I could find the video. I had it at one time. Good for Theo. James should rot away in solitary confinement the POS. -
Growing up in a young neighborhood in the 1960s, it was full of kids who played/loved sports. Summertime was baseball and the Tigers, in the fall it was Lions football, and when the ponds froze and the snow fell, it was all hockey. Back in those days, Nankin Lake and Stark Pond in Hines Park would freeze over, and Wayne County would clear off the snow, so the people could ice skate and play hockey. The ponds would be packed with kids, and adults. So it was part of our winter culture. Play hockey during the day, and watch and listen to hockey at night. Gordie's career was winding down, at least as a Wing, but I remember watching Red Wing hockey, listening to Budd and Bruce. I've been hooked ever since. The Winged Wheel has been my team for over 40 years. It was tough early on, watching the Wings struggle through the 1970s. Seeing Mickey score his 50th goal on tv in 1973 was one of the few highlights. Dan Maloney "clothes-lining" Brian Glennie in 1975; Marcel Dionne leaving for L.A.; the 1977-78 season when "Agressive Hockey is Back In Town", and the Wings had this town on fire by making the playoffs, and beating Atlanta in the first round, and even giving the mighty Canadiens a battle in the 2nd round. My dad wasn't a hockey fan, so I didn't see a Wing's game in person until the fall of 1978. Going to Olympia for the first time was a real treat. The building was old, but the atmosphere was electric. The Wings beat Chicago 7-2, Vaclav Nedomansky scoring a hat trick. It was also the game Bobby Orr would score his last NHL goal. After that game, I went to as many games as I could. Unfortunately, that would be only for 1 1/2 season, as the team moved to JLA in 1979. (I did see the last game at Olympia, a come from behind 4-4 tie against Jacques Demers and the Quebec Nordiques, and the final game in the Old Red Barn, as the current Wings played the Red Wing Oldtimers.) Once again the Wings were in disarray, but my buddies and I kept going, because we were Wings fans, but also hockey fans. Seeing the top teams and players, and many nights seeing the games in the lower bowl, while paying for the cheap seats. In 1985-86, I split a season ticket, but the Wings hit rock bottom, winning only 17 games. After the 1986-87 season, I again bought season tickets, and have had them ever since. When the Wings won the cup in 1997, it was the greatest feeling in the world. My dream had finally come true, seeing a Stanley Cup Championship here in Detroit. We have been so fortunate to have an owner who had the passion to do whatever it took to make the Wings the best organization in the league. We may not win every night, or be Stanley Cup Champs every year, but I will always be a Red Wings fan.

According to NHL.com schedule, the Hawks/Jackets game is also a 2pm start, so I don't think either team will have much of an advantage.
-
I didn't see a thread for this, so I thought I'd let everyone know that this Sunday's Wings/Hawks game has been moved up to a 12:30pm start. Originally scheduled for 3pm, NBC changed the start time. Hopefully the Wings won't be too tired from their game in Dallas on Saturday afternoon.

And to add insult to injury, Gonchar scores right after he gets out of the box. I'm sorry, but that's an asinine rule. He should've been given the penalty shot. So what if there are two goals at the same time on the scoresheet, he should've at least been given the chance.

Jeremy Roenick says "a big fall is ahead for the Red Wings"

Mickey is, IMHO, the best color man in the game. He goes out of his way to try and not be a homer. He knows the game, and he tells it like it is. I have a few dvds of his first year broadcasting Red Wing games back in 1979, when he teamed up with Larry Osterman on ON-TV. He was pretty quiet, and learning his craft, and then he moved on to CBC doing HNIC. He came back to Detroit in 1985, and we have been lucky to have him doing games since. I like Ken Daniels, but Mickey and Dave Strader were a really good team. I don't look forward to the day he retires, especially if we have Larry Murphy full time doing color. He's hard to listen to. So keeper goin Mick, Red Wing hockey isn't the same when you aren't in the booth. I personally think he should have gone into the HHOF in the broadcasters category way before John Davidson.

The guy in the green striped(flannel?) shirt gets Kronwalled 3 times.....haha. And he looks a little like Hank.

Especially for all of us unemployed construction workers. Loosen up those purse strings Mikey, I could use a job.

4) Never. When Bud retires, I want to hear a recorded "Last minute of play in this period". New guy is not impressive. Just as long as they hit "play" when there is 1 minute remaining. I love Budd, but there have been a few times where it's into the last minute before he says it. One of the games I attended this year, there were about 30 seconds left before he said it. I know it's been mentioned in the past, but I've heard the Wings are heading to the Palace for a few years, until a new arena is built. We'll see.

I guess Pavel Brendl missed the list by 1 year, being drafted 4th overall by the Rangers in 1999. Talk about a bust.

Just shows the skill level these goalies have, as they do practice shooting through the photographer's hole. But hey, where's the delay of game penalty? He obviously did it on purpose....haha. Classy move by Ryan after the game.

Not to go off topic too much, but I seem to recall a Wings/Stars game where Mike Modano,(or maybe another player) got injured, was on a stretcher, and Ray Lane came over and tried to interview him? Anyone else remember that?
-
Just so you know, the game starts at 7pm Friday, not 7:30 as originally scheduled.
-
Mac will be just fine. I know everyone here loves Mickey, and he started out quiet and reserved in his first season on ON-TV back in 1979.

I'd rather play on an NHL sized rink, but if the city that hosts the games has International size ice, then use that. Just like the downhill events, every Olympics has it's own challenges and uniqueness, ice hockey included. Most of the players that will be in the Olympics are playing on NHL sized rinks now, plus I agree with the other posters about the speed of the game being slower on the bigger ice. 1980, 1988, and 2002 Olympics were all NHL size rinks anyway.
-
I don't know about the last player, but the last Red Wing with back to back hat tricks is Brendan Shanahan. February 8, 1997 against Pittsburgh and February 12, 1997 against San Jose. Wings beat the Pens 6-5, and the Sharks 7-1.

I think he's a distant relative of mine, although he uses and e, and I use an o in my last name. They just don't make hockey rinks like they used to.......hilarious Don't know if that defenseman he just burned feels better or worse after seeing his celebration. -
Though I don't believe that Shanny will have his number retired here, I would like to see him be honored with Shanahan Night. Have him come in on say, St. Patrick's Day, and do something for him. I would like to see the same for Hull, Luc, Cheli and Dom, Igor and possibly D-Mac. And when Drapes and Malts retire, the same for them. I think all deserve recognition for their careers here in Detroit, whether short or long, and what they did to bring championships here. Even though Sergei left after 13 years, I think he also deserves a night of honor, if not a jersey retirement. He was one of the catalysts that helped Detroit win three cups, and he put up pretty good numbers. As for Ozzie, I think that if he passes Sawchuk for wins as a Detroit goalie, he needs 43, he deserves serious consideration for his jersey to be retired. I agree with Kelly Hrudy, Ozzie still doesn't get the respect he deserves. Lidstom is a no brainer, but I would like to have Red Kelly's number retired as well.

Another idea for GM's - Shorten Season to 70-74 games
oldredbarnman replied to RedWingsRox's topic in General
I agree partly with your post. I would like to have a schedule where every team plays a home and home. My suggestion would be that Detroit would play each team out of it's division twice, and division teams 8 times. That way you still have an 82 game schedule. Division 4 teams x 8 games= 32 Rest of league 25 teams x 2 games=50 That way, you would keep the rivalries, and close travelling, but would still be able to see all of the teams. This would benefit the Wings, as they wouldn't have to travel to the west coast as much. As to your point about playoffs. I agree with you that it sucks how we always end up playing west coast teams, while the east has it pretty easy. My solution would be that the NHL go back to the early 1980s, and make the playoffs a 16 team tournament. Which ties in with the more balanced schedule I have suggested. That way, 1 would play 16, and so on. It would make the playoffs more interesting, and even have some east coast/west coast matchups. Division winners would get the top 6 positions, followed by the next best 10 teams in points. With a more balanced schedule, there would be less complaining about a team fighting for the final playoff berths, seeing they played each time at least twice. -
I go to about 10-15 games a season, including playoffs. Been a season ticket holder for 23 years, and was lucky enough to watch Stevie lift the cup twice at the Joe. Have seen 3 games so far this year.
