Here's hoping that the Wings organization do the right thing and build a new arena. I have never liked Joe Louis Arena, from day 1. It does have atmosphere, but so did the Olympia. But just like Olympia, it has a very small concourse, VERY small bathrooms, and they call THAT a proshop? With the statues inside, it makes it even smaller. Not only will a new building create jobs, (laid off construction worker for 9 months) it would help in creating other construction around it. Plus, Cobo could use the building as a remodel or a new addition for expansion.

For older fans- televised games in Detroit in late 70's, early 80s
oldredbarnman replied to thegreat66's topic in General
I have a couple of old Red Wing Media Guides from the early 70s. In 73-74, and 74-75, the Wings were on Ch. 50 about 28 times in each season.( Budd Lynch and Larry Adderly doing the play-by-play and color commentary.) Basically the beginning of the "Dead Wings" era. In the 78/79 season, after getting this area all fired up with it's 1st playoff appearance in 8 seasons the previous year, 29 games were televised.(Again according to the 78/79 media guide) Unfortunately, the losing ways continued. With the possibility of it being the last game at Olympia Stadium, WKBD broadcast a rare home game on April 8, 1979. The fans who came out that night braved a nasty icestorm, but the Wings didn't disappoint as they beat Montreal 1-0. This was the last of the great Montreal teams that won 4 straight cups. Ken Dryden played his last regular season game, and Scotty coached his last regular season game for the Habs. Jimmy Rutherford was named the #1 star. (I have a copy of this game on DVD, and I also was at the game) The Joe wasn't ready as the 79-80 season began. The Wings would play their first 12 home games at the "Old Red Barn" before moving to JLA. 23 road games were televised, plus select home games were shown on ON-TV, a pay station that was used at night on WXON Channel 20. This is the year Mickey Redmond began his broadcasting career. About 7 of the last 12 games at Olympia were broadcast. (But not the last one, a 4-4 tie against Jacques Demers and the Quebec Nordiques on December 15th. Wings came back from a 4-0 deficit, with Greg Joly scoring the tieing goal late in the 3rd. The Barn was rockin' that night) By 1983/84, only 15 games were shown on regular TV, plus the 4 playoff games the Wings played against St. Louis. PASS sports started showing home games in 84 or 85. In 1986/87, 14 games were shown on Ch. 50, and 29 on PASS. Hard to imagine, with every game on TV these days, what a treat it really was to have a Wings game on, back when I started watching in the early 70s. -
Belfour may be passed over because of his office problems, just like Dino. Guess we'll find out Tuesday. Just curious as to why Scott Stevens' name is there. He was inducted in '07.

Great stuff!! I also remember Nick clearing the puck as it was just about to cross the goal line that would've tied the score against Colorado in I believe game #2 of the WCF in '97.

I saw Helm shirts at one of the corner vendors in Westland last Friday. I believe at Venoy and Ford Rd. Don't know if he's still there. Didn't notice any Filppula shirts though.

Mickey Redmond can be credited with a few of the Wings' nicknames. "Professor" for Igor Larionov, "Rocket Man" for Paul Ysebaert, and I think "Stevie Wonder", but I could be wrong on that one. Steve's first nickname was "Silk", because he was so smooth.

I would much rather the referees AND linesman, who can also make that call, be on top of the play. Columbus gets called in the 1st round for too many men on a close play at their bench. Now, 4 sets of eyes can't see 6 men for over 20 seconds? The player who got off was right by the center ice ref. How hard is it to count players? The score was 2-1. They miss that call, moments later the Pens get a PP and score to tie the game. That was a HUGE turn of events. It possibly could've been 3-1 Wings, or at the very least still 2-1 going into the second.

Better to be lucky and up 2-0 than be in Pittsburgh's sho......skates

The way the game is called now, you have a valid point. But by the only angle I have of the play, the camera behind Hossa, it looks like Hossa just lifted his stick. Granted it was more than a second, and Hossa is leaning forward, but that's what I see. I could be wrong, but without the reverse angle, it's hard to tell.

The Olympia Room is a restaurant on the west side of the building, not a far walk from the lockeroom. You have to be a member to get in. They offer the season ticket holders a chance to join every year, but it's too rich for my blood.

Up until last year, I made every SCFs games from 95 on. Went to game 5 last year, and I'll be there for game 5 this year, when we clinch it.

Since playing at Joe Louis Arena, the Wings have been in the playoffs (including this year) 23 times. The 4 times they have won the cup, they have won at least 8 homes games. 1997 9-1 @ Home 1998 8-3 @ Home 2002 8-5 @ Home 2008 9-2 @ Home This year, the Wings have already won 8 home games heading into the Finals. (8-1) I like our chance to repeat.

I guess I'm dating myself, but I remember when Budd did the play by play on tv back in the 70s. "Get up Nick(Libett), there's no penalty" Budd is the best!

Typical Quennville team. Get behind, goon it up. Wrappin' her up on Wednesday boys!!!! -
For anyone who is going to tonights game, Sarah wrote on the Blackhawks forum that she will be here to interview Wings & Hawks fans, and "anyone who will talk with me." She titled her thread, "Heading to Detoilet for tomorrows game." (Real Classy)

If you are just running in to get them, you may be able to pull right up and park across from the ticket entrance. I have in the past. Or park next to the building and put your 4 ways on. Again, if you're only going to be there a few minutes. Sometimes there's a guard there that will help you. There's also a fenced in lot next to JLA. I don't know if it is open, or if they charge, even to pick tickets up.

Duck fans would be better served to ***** about their own team play. Selanne coughs the puck up, and Helm scores on the breakaway. Niedermeyer pinches in, the Wings transition, Flip wins the battle for the puck, Pav gets hit behind the net as he passes it out, and Sammy scores. The whole time Niedermeyer is coasting back. If he hustles at all, he could've gotten to Sammy and broken the play up. Instead of dumping it deep, Perry throws a cross ice pass that is deflected at the Wings blueline, which results in Cleary's goal.

Actually he said, "Are you kidding me?" It may sound like the "S" word, but it wasn't.

And once again, the Original 6 teams in the East can't hold up their end to get a possible O6 Final.

Born and raised Michigander. Been a Wing's fan for as long as I can remember. My sister had a huge crush on Gary Unger, and would scream everytime the Wings scored a goal. (When the games were on tv, which was rare back then.) I remember the night Mickey scored his 50th, and then 51st goals in the 72-73 season. My dad wasn't a big sports fan, so I didn't see my first game in person until October of 78. Bobby Orr scored his last NHL goal that night. Olympia Stadium, now THAT was a hockey building. It wasn't easy being a Wings fan back then, but I always watched. We didn't have great teams, but we did have Bruce Martyn, Budd Lynch & Sid Abel to listen to. Been a season ticket holder for 23 years, and watched Stevie hoist 2 cups at the Joe. It was worth the wait!!
