I've been hearing this argument for the past 24 hours and I still think it's ridiculous. First, there is precident: the 1908 Merkle game and the 1983 Pine Tar game. Hell, the league retroactively took away two perfect games and 48 no hitters in 1991, so there's no reason they couldn't retroactively award one now. Second, I don't buy the Pandora's box or slippery slope arguments for all sorts of reasons: The Tigers, the Indians, Jim Joyce, Jason Donald, and anyone who saw the replay agree it was the wrong call. The play happened on the 27th out, so there's no argument that it affects the course of the rest of the game as it would if it happened in the 6th inning--particularly since Galarraga got the 28th out as well. Overturning this doesn't change who won or lost the game; it takes one hit away from Donald and it gives Galarraga the official recognition for the perfect game everyone knows he pitched. The situation is so unique that it in no way opens the Pandora's box of having to go back and overturn every missed call in MLB history as some have proposed. Selig also has the precedent of the 'best interest of the game' clause, which is met so clearly here in a way that overturning the vast majority of bad calls is not.

Some of Jim Joyce's comments after the game:
-
I don't get why the umpires didn't huddle up after that call. On one hand, it's a little embarrassing to have your call overruled, but it would have saved him from baseball infamy.
-
Jim Joyce is gonna be hung in effigy after that one. You'd wish they could overturn that, but even if they did Galarraga and the team don't get their on field celebration. But it's great to see Galarraga looking like his old self again.

Flip was the team's best forward many nights early in the season before he got hurt. He would have had career numbers had he been healthy. He gets better every year and he's just coming into his prime. He's signed for the next three years at $3M. I agree--he sounds like a player the team should dump. The Wings need to reestablish 3 scoring lines rather than 2 scoring lines and 2 energy lines. A big part of that *is* seeing whether Flip can take his game to another level and whether players like Helm, Abdelkader, Eaves, or Miller can morph in 40-point players. But as Babs knows, those are things that may or may not happen.

I'm proud of you boys! Go Wings!

Funny, I never saw Tennents' in Glasgow. I think I missed out Look, deep deep down most of us know the Wings are done, even if we keep hope for something different. We know the numbers, and we know how the story ends. One win doesn't change that. The Wings are playing to live another day, nothing more, nothing else. But we can make a series of it tonight. Go Wings.

I can't think of two bigger lucky breaks/fluky goals than Lidstrom's stick snapping to produce the GWG in game 2 or Couture's freak shot from the corner to tie game 3. At least one or two others have gone in off our defence as well. You could consider 3 5-on-3 goals in a single playoff series a pretty good break too. So it goes both ways. But go on thinking that all the Sharks goals are 'good' and most of the Wings are 'fluky' if you like.

Well, I think it shows that they're a proud hockey team not to get swept on home ice. But yes, I think the Wings know it's a long row to hoe.

In 1997 we beat the Avs 6-0 in game 4 and then lost 6-0 in game 5. Last night was fun, but it was one win and nothing more. It's easy to get to that level for one game with your backs against the wall. Doing it three more times will be another matter.

I'm really proud of how our team played last night. But they're still in a bad situation and face a very difficult game at the Tank on Saturday to get this thing back home. Things don't look so dark today but there's still a long way to go. In 1997, the Wings beat the Avs 6-0 in game 4. They lost the next game 6-0. They came back and won the series in six games, but they don't get that chance if they screw the pooch on Saturday. They trot out the clichés at times like this because they're true. One game at a time. Before yesterday's game, Babcock told the team one period at the time. They've won three. They've still got at least nine to go. I'm reminded of a Tragically Hip song. "An inch an hour, two feet a day." Go Wings.

Seconded. So long as they have the picture of the Queen back up in their arena too.
-
f*** yeah! That is all.

Thanks, vladdy16, and we should respect their privacy on the matter. Get well soon, Matt!

Lilja's in for Lebda because Brett Lebda sucks. Ericcson has shown promise in the past, and it takes time for a defenceman to learn the game. This is great experience either way. Same for Howie.

Yes, everyone going to the game cheer your hearts out. Stay to the end no matter what. And cheer the team as they skate off the ice no matter what. And do not under any circumstances be like those prick fans in Phoenix who were booing their team halfway through game 7. Go Wings.

I agree it doesn't look good and it's all but inevitable, but can we save threads like this until *after* the Wings lose a fourth game?
-
That was the 2007 team. This is the team Babcock beat the Wings with.
-
This thread is ricockulous. That looks like every legal line change in the history of the game.

I can think of 29 other teams that would be interested in hiring him.
