It just seems like it makes sense to rennovate the old stadium, given the location advantages and number of ice sheets it has. Yeah, some city planning types might be hoping for a new barn downtown to anchor redevelopment like Van Andel did in GR, but right off I-94 is so nice if you're coming in from Benton Harbor, Battle Creek, or points east of there. I think the 'Coast is less picky about stadiums than they were during the boom years, and Wings Stadium has such nice sight lines for hockey. And I kind of dig that old arena smell of too much old cigarettes and spilled beer with a hint of pot.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Holmstrom retire this year, though my bet is that he stays for another 2-3 years until his BFF and carpool buddy decides to call it a career. He's been the league's whack-a-forward for a decade now, and his body's not bouncing back from injury like it used to.

Be nice if they made the jump to the ECHL. Then-future husband and I went to a ton of Wings/K-Wings games back in college. Funny how well a relationship founded on watching Kevin Evans and Enrico Ciccone beat the crap out of people can end up working out.

In one of those both it's good and bad deals, if Lilja starts the season on the long-term injured list, (which unfortunately wouldn't surprise me at this point) I don't think he counts toward cap space until he's activated. I want to say Leino is an UFA, and his contract is up after this series. So we probably need to give him a full time roster spot with the big club if we want to keep him. If Abby doesn't have to clear waivers to go to GR, then that's where he will start the season in all likliehood.

CBC apparently quoted Jim Nill a while back saying that Helm wouldn't see the minors again. (I assume save for the odd injury rehab stint)

I'm not sure how much you could get for Lilja right now. Who wants to give up much for a guy with one significant long term head injury that also makes him at further risk for another one down the road? He's a solid journeyman, but there are 20 other guys out there that will be UFAs this summer that would fill most of the same role as Lilja does that you wouldn't have to give up a pick for and who wouldn't have the head injury issue.

Anyone else getting the ExtenZe commercials or is it just Directv? Not really appropriate for a tv program this early in the evening, IMO.

Plenty of Wings fans in the 32578 (Niceville, FL) for all that we're still outnumbered by the Auburn football types. A friend of mine is making sure to fly her Wings car flag every game day of the playoffs.

No conspiracy. Mellon Arena apparently had a couple of concerts and other events already booked in May that the league is now having to schedule around.

I kind of like how everyone calls him 18 different things and you still just know who they're talking about. I find it more fun that having everyone settle on one nickname.

IIRC, it had something to do with them wearing black jerseys in practices while they were up with the Wings.

Directv and Center Ice do use those kinds of raw feeds every so often, though less so than in years past. IIRC, sometimes it had to do with a local broadcast channel (ie. Channel 50 in Detroit) having rights to the games and there would be some sort of deal with them not broadcasting the local commercials nationally and Center Ice just keeping the raw feed on the screen rather than going to their own national commercials during that time block. They also used to carry the odd Montreal game done entirely in French, which was interesting to see even though I remember nothing of high school French. I'm also kind of bummed that since the NHL channel got Hockey Night in Canada, they now splice in their own US commercials instead of the Canadian ones. No longer do we get to see the "I am Joe...and I am Canadian" ads or the PEI Economic Development Board commercials. Instead it's more frelling Crosby ads.
