  1. If you're going with a waste management theme, I gotta say I prefer the old Danbury Trashers alternate jerseys. Too bad about how their ownership group had the indictment for organized crime activties that led to the folding of the team. They really made the bush leagues a little more colorful for a couple seasons. http://flickr.com/photos/95251552@N00/9582599
  2. IMO, it's still not as bad as some of the vintage Caunks stuff or the Islander's infamous 'fishsticks' third jerseys, but they're still very much 'what were they thinking?' So the numbers are front and back sides? Does a team really want to make it any easier for a referee to correctly identify players for penalty calls, when a certain number of peanlties are probably not called right now because the ref was not confident they'd be whistling the right player?

Versus to Bring Back Puck Tracking

As long as it's not during live action, I kind of like the idea. There are always a handful of times during a game when the puck is up along the boards in such a location that the cameras don't pick it up properly, and every once a while you get the puck coming out of that 'nowhere' as part of an interesting play. So if you use the glo-puck technology during that little bit of time it's otherwise hidden, it can be useful in understanding said series of interesting events. Just please let the 'sperm tail effect' on hard slap shots stay back in the 90s where it belongs.

Directv Center Ice has been dual feed for a while now, but I seem to remember the LA Kings announcing crew making me want to extract my own eardrums with a rusty spork.

    Visiting Detroit

The key words being 'As long as it doesn't take a long time to get out of the first game'. I'm trying to remember how long wait time typically is to get out of the parking lot at the Palace, but I can remember spending 30+ minutes at the JLA parking garage, and once spent like an hour and a half in the lot of the Pontiac Silverdome after a Pink Floyd concert before we could get to the exit of the parking area. Anyone have recent exit time examples for the Palace, or know if they've got some non-season ticket holders priority/VIP parking area that would get you on the road quicker for extra $$$?

Direct TV, FSN Detroit HD Inquiry

If you are stuck paying for Center Ice in additional to regional sports, the bright side is that you get HNIC as well as some Rogers Canadian regional games, and you otherwise wouldn't get that programming unless you lived in a Ca-US border broadcast area. I just hope we get the HNIC games in HD this year. It seems like that would be a new way to appreciate Don Cherry's wardrobe choices.

    Pictures of Lidstroms House

While I'm generally not a big fan of the faux French chateau look, I like this one. It would be very easy to overdo a home like this and turn it into some sort of caricature of a McMansion, but the furniture and decor seems to be almost reserved, and it seems like a comfortable family home for a family with young active kids. Love the family room in picture 8- seems both spacious and cozy. Gotta say I'm not a big fan of all that red in the media room though.

Direct TV, FSN Detroit HD Inquiry

Depends on whether you're getting FS Detroit because it's been designated as your regional sports channel, or if it's because you get all the regionals because you've got the giant sports channels package. If you're getting FS Detroit because it's your designated regional, then you should get all content on the channel because you're 'in market' there. If you've got it because you've got an ADC (All the Darn Channels) package and they don't consider it to be your designated regional, then hockey, pro basketball, football, and baseball will be blacked out on it. If you can't get Directv customer service to answer the question, or don't want to deal with Directv customer service (which has had bad hold times the last few times we've had issues with them) the easiest way to tell what you've got is to just wait until the first game after the usual free preview week and see if you still get the game. If you don't, it's one call to customer service to set up Center Ice, and you should be off hold and watching Da Wings again by about the first intermission. (They seem to have done away with the early subscriber/auto renewal discount, so it doesn't matter anymore if you start the package before or after the season starts)

Bulgaria women's hockey team loses 82-0

Only thing I could think of regarding sportsmanship was that it was a pool play game where goal differential is commonly used as a tiebreaker in determining who makes it to the bracket round. And a couple other teams had already racked up 30-40 goals on Bulgaria, give it a little bit of padding in terms of other games in the pool, and if you wanted to be 'safe' about advancing, you probably didn't want to think about easing back a little until you hit 50 goals. Slovakia's an IIHF Division 1 team with a real chance to advance to the Olympics. Bulgaria is a Division 5 team that should have never entered the tournament. Normally the IIHF is good about keeping the skill levels separate, if only to keep play relatively safe. Can't blame the Slovakian women for wanting to make sure they were looking good coming out of pool play in the tournament. It's their job to do everything they can to qualify for the Olympics.

Bulgaria women's hockey team loses 82-0

Bulgaria should have never entered the tournament. They're an IIHF Division 5 team. For comparison, Turkey and South Africa are IIHF Division 4 women's teams. Slovakia is a Division 1 team, which is the level right below the USA, Canada, Russia, etc. It's not out of the question that Slovakia could play its way into the Olympics if this tournament goes well, and if they have to go to a tiebreaker in their pool against Italy or Croatia, then goal differential might have mattered. (both of those games against Bulgaria were like 30-40 goal margins)

    Former Wings...

Back when the web was young, I spent a lot of time lurking on the old Red Wings mailing list out of msu.edu During that time, BKP (Big Keith Primeau) generated a truly Sammy-like amount of hate from the list posters for his chronic underachieving and boneheaded moves.

Which teams could you live without

I never understood the logic behind putting a franchise in Nashville. It's both a small market metro (less than 1.5 million people even if you count the exburbs) and a non-traditional market. You can still have a viable franchise with one of those strikes against you, but both of them together are pretty much a recipe for doom.

    Wings interested in Ray Emery

If the substance abuse rumors are true, I can't see the Wings being serious about Emery. D Mac had done a lot for the team when Holland sent him to play elsewhere for that reason, and only asked him back when he had about five different players willing to vouch that he had made a real commitment to be clean and sober.

    Sergei Kolosov/Siarhei Kolasau signed.

You see, the Red Wings recently set up an Asian scouting office that's normally based out of Vladivostok. The guys in the office decided to take a vacation after the draft, and headed to Samoa for a week. They turned up this group of Samoan kids playing an improvised game of street hockey on the beach- goals made from repurposed tuna nets, sticks carved out of native hardwoods, and they thought a couple of the kids had potential. Siarhei? Big Samoan-Indian guy. Not surprisingly, he gets his size from the Samoan side of the family. Good soft hands, can use his size drop other players like a mo-fo on a check but needs to work on his skating, as right now he's never been on ice skates. But you take some chances on some of these guys and sometimes it works out nicely, and since Homer's only got so many more years left, we might as well look for a replacement large ass to park in front of the net.

    Roberts won't re-sign with Pittsburgh

It seemed like common knowledge in PGH for a long while that Orpik wasn't going to be back next season, and a conflict with Therrien was the major reason why.

    SI Article: Wings Drafting...

A quick google tells me that 12% of players drafted in the 3rd round or greater between 1990-2000 became career NHL players. (defined as playing 200 or more NHL games) http://proicehockey.about.com/od/prospects...aft_success.htm Anyone here want to run the numbers for Wings picks in recent years? If they're around 18%, (which I wouldn't be surprised at) then you're talking about a club doing 50% better than the NHL as a whole in finding and developing useful NHL players from late rounds. Though I probably would admit to fudging the career NHL criteria a little if a young guy's looking on pace to play 200. Call it two 55 game seasons or something.

Per Sipple, Wings are close to signing Lilja

Wasn't there also something about his wife having a child from a previous marriage, and according to the divorce decree, she needs to clear it with her ex if she wants to move that child out of the state of California. If so, I could see Stuart trying to stick with a Cali or Arizona team for his wife and his stepchild's sake. It would be nice to get Stuart back, but I can understand why it wouldn't work for him, given those kinds of circumstances.

Apparently it was so poorly watched in Canada that it didn't get renewed up there. Track down a copy of The Tournament instead. Very funny mockumentary about youth hockey.

    Penguins Offer Hossa Extension

You go by what you've actually seen. Because if you did a survey of the folks here about how many Pens games they watched last year, I'd bet that on average, more than half the Pens gamees watched were in the finals, and Hossa seems to be their best forward, by far, in said finals games. Up until about game 6, Malkin was Milk Carton boy.

Your one day with the cup

First, I'd get word out to other hockey fans in the 850 because the Cup is meant to be shared. Then I'd rent a big boat and take the party out on Choctawhatchee Bay. Make a stop at the dock at Eglin AFB and do something there with it and the troops. Then a quiet dinner with it and a couple of friends here who are hard core Red Wings fans.
