They bring out the best in everyone, even the Leafs.

Excellent thread, Mindfly, I really enjoyed it. McCarty looked like he was about to loose it and break out a tear or two. W at his best, no doubt. Fedorov commented on how impressed he was meeting Bush in "02. Edit: '02 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X95JniD8gto

OK, I actually laughed out loud at that one, too.

After ripping the Flames for 11 goals in 2 games, Vancouver is held to 2 shots on goal the first perioed, 1 the second, and 7 for the third. Must be because Fed's was playing D. I would have liked to see him playing D. IF I get Center Ice On Line, will I be able to replay the game?

Ken Holland and Tom Lowell are both right in thinking that Chelios is still an invaluable part of the Detroit Red Wings defensive core and still has much to contribute. I would eleaborate but I've got to get back to work. 20 minute lunch break is almost over.

OK, you guys are right. I've alwasy admired Jerome Iginla and was somehwat suprised by the comments on this board about his antics. He's obviously highly skilled, and he'll drop the gloves. Tonite, he got mowed over by one of the Canucks; mowed over big time. He gets up and looks at the ref with his hands out like "WTF, Ref?" I could almost hear the "Whaa". Getting no response from the ref pisses him off so he goes and hits two guys in a row and gets an interference penalty, already down 3-0 late in the second. I just can't see Datsyuk or Zetterberg doing that. First game of the season and he's already loosing his cool. C'mon, Jerome.

The first long road trip will bring the boys toghether.

Always makes me chuckle, too. And if we still real off 41 shots while plaing like crap, how many will we take when we're playing well?
-
You mean the Wings won't be on our CBC out here tonite? s***e, I scheduled my whole day around it and didn't bother to get Center Ice Online yet because its on CBC. Incidently, I can't seem to join the Canucks forum. I wonder if its because I'm so of the border? Or do you think they know I'm not really a Canucks fan?

OK, I admit after reading my OP again, it definitely doesn't convey an accurate account of the scene that openned my eyes to Iginla's poor attitude. I simply said that he went and hit two guys, wich you are right, says nothing. For that I apologize an expect to run the proverbial gauntlet, skating fast and sliding bare assed into snow bank wearing only a jock strap, hockey gloves, and togue, to atone for my lazy OPmanship.(It was late after watching Wings then Flames) More accurate account here, not meant to neccessarily change anyone's mind, rather to make sure that all the cards are on the table. What I would have been excited about: IF he would have gotten up and continued play and lined up a couple of Kronner Highlighters. Wow, impressive. Don't f*** with Iginla. But thats not what happenned. And that may very well be what you guys are envisoning thruout this whole thread because I didn't make myslef clear. First the crying to the ref. In and of itself, not that big of a deal. But then he tried to chase guys down, and take these awkward, i'll timed, off line hits where he didn't even really make contact with the targets, and kind of bounced off of them hurting himself more than his intended targets. It was embarrassing. They were harmless hits because he couldn't line them up, because he was trying to hard to hit someone when a hit wasn't there. It really showed me how vulnerable to distraction he can be. You put the whole 20 second sequence together, it looked like a 5 yr old having a meltdown, not a hockey player defending his honor. Its one shift out of a star's career that you know he would rather forget. But guys on LGW say he does too often for them, and now I can see what they are talking about. It wasn't that big of a deal, but it was enough of something that I hadn't really seen in him before to warrant taking him off my personal favorites list. I actually said to the tv, "Wow, dude, sit down and grab a hanky, it's not that bad. Yes, I thought he was an awesome power forward. Yes I liked his grit and skill combo. I actually had high hopes for him and Bertuzzi on the same line. Now I'm afraid there are going to turn into a big ***** and complain line. Does that paint a different picture than what you were thinking before? I'm not trying to tell you what to think, I'm not trying to make friend's with you or piss you off, I just want to make myself clear so you can make up your own mind based on an accurate picture. Cheers Edit: (Tori) Spelling, typos, clarity, new revelations, all sorts of s***.

I don't see the point in going up to an opponent at the end of a 9-1 shalacking and effectively saying, "Hi, we obviously can't beat you in hockey but I can punch you in the face." Exactly what is the message there? There is a place in hockey for fighting, but that aint it. Thats called being a sore loser.
-
He sent a message alright. The message he sent confirmed what people here have been sayig about him: he's a sensitive boy and its easy to get under his skin and take him off his game. You know guys are just sitting there on the bench telling each other "Dude, watch this. I'm gonna rap Iggy a good one, then watch him get pissed and chase me around the rink like a little girl. Meanwhile, if you're not laughing so hard that you pee your hockey pants, you pick up his puck and score with it while the Flames are watching their Captain try to lay a little scream on me." Granted, I don't ever want to fight Jerome Iginla: he'd kill me. Point is, he's got a bit of a rep here on LGW, and last night I saw more evidence of it than I wanted to, and felt I couldn't defend him any longer. Would I like to play shinny on the lake with him, of course. Would I like to have him show me around Calgary, of course. Would I want Holland to make him Captain of the Wings once Lidst retires, no way. Would I want my kid to emulate that on the ice, no.

Juuuuust kinda skimmed the thread, didn't ya. Yep. Reeeeeeeally didn't read much at all, huh...(heavy sigh) Thanks for your input.
-
And some still think highly enough of Bertuzzi to pair him with a 50 goal scorer on the first line. You just never know. If it were easy, everyone could build a Stanley Cup winner.

Like the title of the thread indicates, now I see what people are talking about in regards to Iginla, becuase before I did not. When people say that about the Ducks, I already understand and agreed. Before, I disagreed about Iginla. Thats why I singled him out. Last night I was watching the Calgary/Canucks game. Saw what happened and how he responded and I thought to said to myself "T.Low, thats what the guys on LGW are talking about in regards to Iginla. You need to give credit where credit is due". So I posted it. I would have thought that you could have minimized your time that you say was waisted by not responding to the OP and simply move on to something not waisteful. Thats kind of a benefit of the internet. And like I indicated in the OP, Datsyuk or Zetteberg does not react the same way, and I do not throw my arms up in the air and cry. I like seeing the Wings respond with a score and a win instead of flying around half cocked and letting it get under their skin and get them off thier game. I am a fan of disciplined sport. Thats the style of hockey I play, the style of basketball I play, and the way I race white water slalom. Keep focused. There is a time for hitting and fighting to be sure, but Iginla made an idiot of himself last night, not a leader, and it cost his team. I don't fear those guys. The guys I fear are the ones who get tougher and player harder and are more difficult to stop when they get beat on more. There are guys in our league that you don't want to upset, because then you will not be able to stop them. The "Oh s***, you just awoke a sleeping giant" guys. Those are the guys I want on my team. No the ones who want to fight when they are frustrated. Edit: (Tori) Spelling and typos

Sometimes the problem with being so talented and skilled is that when you're "off", you really look bad. The Wings should have started the season off by keeping it simple and basic. Their passing skills allow them to more often (almost routinely) make passes that most would consider to be high risk. Other teams would not attempt those cross ice passes etc. As a team, last night they were off just enough that those passes weren't getting thru and they should have gone back to a north and south game and crash the net. I think the original post was accurate with some good insights.
-
Exactly. Thansk for pinpointing the idea. I've always liked his combination of toughness and skill. But last night, already frustrated from getting creamed by the Canucks, he gets nailed by a clean hockey hit. If I remember correctly, he just got rubbed out big time against the boards. Point is that it was a clean hit. He went off on a hunting rampage, totally took him out of his game. He chased guys down and hit them late, not even making good contact but still trying to force the hit for retaliation sake, and just looked like an idiot. Yeah, I suppose that may be hockey, but its stupid hockey. If he would not have complained to the ref, but rather just lined up a well timed hit on some one or even hit the same guy that hit him, or even fought the same guy that hit him, there would be no post complaining about Iginla. But he ran around like a 5 year old having a melt down. I was actually hoping for good things from he and Bertuzzi on the same line, but now I just think they're both show too much whiner tendencies.

Hey, I like both your avatars! And I don't understand how the Leafs beat Detroit without Boyd Devereaux?
-
No, don't like it at all. Keeping track of the puck is a fundamental and significant part of the game. Its not necessarily suppossed to be easy, and I don't think it needs to be made easier for the fans. "Where's the Biscutt" is an essential part of the game, so much so that it acutally has created a job for Tomas Holmstrom. I like having to look at the players reactions on the ice and estimate the puck progression at the times when I do loose the puck watching on TV. If its used in a telestrator "clinic" type environment, to show a play or explain something, yes, thats totally different.

Wow, I guess it was the '90s! I've been known to place the past in the wrong time slots. Gets me in trouble with the wife every now and then.

Banner ceremony will be 'a little bit awkward' for Hossa

Thats what I would think, the ultimate carrot on a stick visual. -
You, my friend, shoot with pin point accuracy.
-
Ridiculous. Dumbing down the spectator side of the game to increase fan base. Side note: As GOD is my witness, back in the '80's when the puck tracker was installed, my brother's father in law wonderred aloud if the players on the ice were distracted from it. No s***, I kid you not.

Exactly what I was thinking. From relative obscurity to the pinnacle of hockey in one short preseason. Is it Thursday yet?
