The goal that bounced off Smith was mostly bad luck & I don't fault him much on it(other than his trying to swat it with his stick rather than taking one hand and swatting it away.) The goal I was talking about was when Etam burned him after he lost his helmet and he was playing like he was out of his mind. Smith & Quincey were on for all three goals. I don't hate Smith, but he isn't showing much positives IMO. Where is this highly touted offensive flair? He NEVER seems to be able to get a shot through to the net. Where is his toughness & hitting? All you heard about before he joined the big squad was how he was as close to a sure thing top four defenseman the Wings had. Kindl has made great strides & has a cannon he is starting to use from the point. Dekeyser came in playing like a flat out stud until he was injured. Neither of them had great vet d-men to pair with either. Smith has been disappointing especially of late. Being paired with Quincy ain't helping, but it isn't just that.

It would be really interesting to see how Ovi would operate being on the Wings with guys like Z and especially Pavs as his mentors. Then again Mule had Stevie, Z, Nick, Pavs, Drapes, Malts as examples and he only turns it on in the playoffs.

Exactly what about Smith has been fun to watch? He hasn't been playing well and it is simply being pointed out. I wouldn't call that "picking on" him. That shift he got his helmet knocked off, was running around like a decapitated chicken, stayed on waaayyyyyy too long, and ultimately got burned for a goal was especially brutal. Right now he is in over his head it appears. Plenty of vets get flamed for there play when it is warranted. Did you miss all the vitriol for Cleary, White, Sammy, Mule, Flip(Tonight), Quincy etc.... If DD strings some bad games together in a row he will get flamed as well, but that hasn't happened. Lot's of the up & comers are getting tons of love lately. The 3rd line in particular has been freaking incredible.

Yes it was a bit of a trip by Perry, but Quincy's sprawling on the ice and sliding ten feet didn't help a damn thing. They are never going to call that in the last few minutes. Get back on your friggin feet man!!!!

I don't think anyone is suggesting this, but he has been pretty brutal. The pairing with an equally brutal Quincey is gut puckering every time they are on the ice. You KNOW Jimmy is going to have to stand on his head when they are out there.

Smith & Quincey are making Boleski & Etam look like all-stars this series. Worst. Defense. Pairing. Ever....

Actually, I'm 41 and have played hockey since I was 6. What Buckeye said was spot on. This is the EXACT type of hit that the league has repeatedly stressed that if you engage in you will suffer consequences. Lydman was in a vulnerable position, and Abby came in recklessly from his blind side from halfway across the ice. If he kept his elbows down, feet on the ice, and hit him more square to the front we aren't having this discussion. There is a reason that Lydman most likely has a concussion and it isn't because Abby gave him a nice clean shoulder check.

Sammy has potted some timely goals in the past. Here's hoping he can sink one tonight

I'm surprised so many people are questioning the validity of this suspension. When the play happened in real time my initial thought was "dumb play by Abby, he is going to pay for that." So many problems with this hit. He targeted him from halfway across the ice. Took about ten strides. Lept up. AND then decides to throw his elbow into the mix for good measure. It was a boneheaded play by a guy that makes boneheaded plays from time to time. As to the official right there not calling a penalty on it. Another poster mentioned that night that the official was probably in disbelief in what he just saw happen because it was so blatantly boneheaded. I tend to agree, see as how I was shaking my head in disbelief. That play sunk us in that game.

He'll be gone for at least one more. Exact kind of hit they are trying to eliminate. Don't leave your ******* feet Abby! Damn that sucks.......
