Quincey re-signed by DET. 2 yr s $4.25 mill AAV

As so many have repeated, it is highly unlikely to rebuild successfully in today's NHL without tanking and thereby securing very high draft picks for a couple of years or more. There is no future franchise player on the Wings' roster and quite possibly not in the minors (so say statistics). Yes, the Wings have some good young talent, but they don't have what a few years of top 4 picks would garner them. Anyone (not you in particular) who mistakes Nyquist and Tatar for the next coming of 19 and 91 or for Dats and Z is deluded. Likewise, DD is not the next Lidstrom.

Holland did not build the 90's Cup teams. He didn't build the '02 team; he spent Illitch's money to maintain it. And he pulled a Joe Dumars in '08 (dumb luck).

Trouble is, there is NOT a rebuild going on. There is a keep-making-the-playoffs going on. A rebuild would most certainly include some or all of the following: (1) New head coach (2) New GM (3) Trading vets for prospects and picks (4) Abstaining from signing middle of the road trash (Q) instead of promoting the kids in GR (5) A near guaranteed spot for Mantha These are the things that usually happen when rebuilding. If you're old enough, think back to the Bryan Murray days. Lots of youngsters on the team, lots of trades happening. That was a rebuild and it was exciting. Today's team is stuck in neutral: awesome but oft-injured vets, no certain (keyword) young face-of-the-franchise players.

Nothing wrong with this so long as the Wings' management would commit to it. Let's start trading some vets for picks and prospects. Go full youth movement. Also, fire Holland first.

If Holland isn't at fault for turning this team into a non-destination, who is?

Good point, but I still believe (hope?) that young players would flourish under the tutelage of Dats and Z more so than under Smyth. On a side note, did you see the way that guy cried skating around the ice for a bazillion minutes after his last game? I thought I was watching John Boehner.

Careful. Helene St. James is the reporter equivalent to Quincey around here.

Big difference considering the Wings have Z and Dats for a few years to help the young prospects.

That's what our whole debate months ago was about. Anyway ... here's hoping for a real youth movement in Detroit. I think we can agree on that.

I'm afraid aging Illitch just wants to see the Tigers win one and is content to see the Wings playoff streak continue.

Still living in fantasy land. Until the streak is broken, the Wings will eek into the playoffs and management/ownership will like it. NOTE: I am not saying that *I* will like it. Don't confuse the two.

I never said I was interested in it either. But the Wings management is.

How much longer? As long as the streak continues, that's how long.

Ansar Khan ‏@AnsarKhanMLive 2h Wings have been told Niskanen going elsewhere. Helene St. James ‏@HeleneStJames 1h . I wrote that last week. More $$ & term elsewhere. / “@nikzomberg: @HeleneStJames word is Wings are out on Niskanen, any validity to that?”

2014 Offseason League Signings and Trades

Hard to "build from within" when the team is committed to making the playoffs every year. If the Wings were to really go with a youth movement, I would support it. But the team is just treading water.

Don't worry. Holland will sign someone, probably a couple someones. They just won't be players anyone else wants at the term/price/movement clause.

How many years will the Wings repeat this same process? Translation: Been there, done that.
