How does Ericsson play so well last year and this year so awful? I don't understand it.

I miss Fischer.

Zetterberg got a stick between the legs by Thornton and I suppose that's alright as well. If the league wants injuries cut down, that kind of crap needs to stop. Throwing elbows, sticks, knees around should be met with a severe penalty. I'm sick of seeing that crap on the ice from ANY team. Maybe the enforcer mentality needs to come back. YOu have the enforcer for situations like that, where there's a purpose for someone going to beat the s*** out of a player. That day is dead it seems. Is May really an enforcer, or just someone that is willing to fight? I don't really think it's as interesting and means much when 2 tough guys decide they're gonna square off. For what reason? No, I want to see the enforcer go after a player that takes liberties with someone in a dirty way (not a clean way).

I'm still confused on the Holmstrom penalty. How does he get a penalty when guys hack, whack, cross check him constantly when he's standing there, and rarely ever gets the call? Then he shoves a guy and gets called. Unbelievable.

What can I say about this one? Do I think the wings will win tonight? Yes. Why? Only because it is San Jose. This is the first game back from a long road trip which scares me though. If we lose tonight, we're gonna start drifting off in la la land, especially with other teams at our heels now. I have to say, if you asked me a couple weeks ago how excited I was during this season, I would have told you I was enjoying it immensely albeit very frustrating we can't string wins together and may miss the playoffs. This season, every game has meant something. But lately, I do not look forward to the games as much because I am losing faith that the wings for this year, are gonna get it done. They do not look anything like they did in the past years or even last year. I don't know what it is exactly but they better figure it out quick. I have been looking at every regular season game as a playoff game. I get super excited during the playoffs, can't wait fo rthe next game to start. That's how I've been. But after the St. Louis game, that has gone away. I hope we make it, but I am just losing the faith.

All this talk about Babcock not knowing what he's doing or whatever is retarded. He's taken us to back to back cups AGAIN, 1 win away from the 2nd. Seriously...come on. A team with a lowsy coach doesn't get to the SCF, sorry. I think the fact of the matter is Babcock expects results from the veteran players, and if they aren't producing, I think Babs feels they should be treated as anyone else, benched or reduced ice time. Just because you've been in the league longer doesn't mean you should continue to get ice time when you're not doing anything, or hurting your team. This ain't the NBA...yet. (Thanks Buttman). By the way, trying not to rant but it's hard: I don't even like the way the NHL is anymore. These teams are all getting set up to be 10 role players and 2-3 stars, maybe 1 superstar per team. Sounds a lot like the NBA. I'm sick of seeing role players take liberties with the stars. I long for the days of enforcers. Every team is watered down. I don't know, maybe I'm spoiled from what we had here, but it was a helluva lot more fun watching that than this team today, or other teams in the league that are good, but are built the same, just a couple stars and role players otherwise.

I don't know why people continue to think Franzen coming back is gonna solve the wings' problems. The wings have been playing this way since the start of the season when they had a full roster. They had 9 regulars out and were playing this way. They got the injury lists down to 2 or 3 players and still played this way. Now they're down to Franzen on the list and they're still playing this way. I had a bad feeling before this game (as noted early in the thread) and this time I did not let myself get too excited even after being up 3 goals. I just don't get it. This team is really screwed up and the only thing I can think of is team chemistry. The talent is there. There is no way they should have trouble scoring goals, and there's no way in hell they shoudl be blowing as many leads as they have been. I don' tcare if they are out of the playoffs by a point. SOoner or later one of the teams that is just outside the playoffs is gonna get hot. It happens every year. I would like it to be detroit but they have played this lackluster defense all season long. Why shoudl I think it's gonna change?

Here's to hoping and praying! Just play howard. I love Ozzie, but I don't trust him right now.

i hope they get far enough to eliminate the Penguins. That's all I care about. ;0

LOL, no it's time for an overtime loss brotha...

I'd like to be opimistic about the Wings, but every time they have a big win they suck a few games after that. I will say we lose in OT at best. I'm sorry, but I am losing confidence that they will make it. They ran a train on SJ and when they had a great opportunity to start moving up, they lost to Anaheim, a very beatable team. I don't know. I'm just trying to keep on an even keel. All season it's been "they look like they're returngin to their old selves" one game, then the next they suck.
-
Well people, it's another late one. Here's to staying up...again.
-
If they have to face Detroit or Chicago at some point, I don't see them getting past either. Chicago looks scary.

Boy it was tough getting up for work this morning, but worth it. I almost turned it off after we went down 2-0. Had we not gotten a goal in the first, I would have probably went to bed. Turns out we went into the intermission tied! Anyway, the wings got up for SJ. I hope they do the same against Anaheim. Here's a great chance to climb into the standings and start securing a spot in the playoffs. Tonight's game will be tough, but LA on Saturday looks like what is shaping up to be a great game. I hope the wings can get on a little win streak here. Anaheim and LA are both beatable despite LA's crazy road success lately (I thought they were gonna go 500 at best on their road trip). Maybe we can catch LA slacking off on their first home game back from that trip. St. Louis is a must win, and the most attainable win in the next 3 games. If we could come out of this road trip 4-0-1 I think we can start to put a couple games distance between being in the playoffs and not being in the playoffs. On another note, I'm really getting sick of having a great night and winning against a good team, and then every other team around us wins their game. Why can't they all lose? Sheesh.
-
How can they make a call like that after several blatent hooks by SJ? Ridiculous. Why do I keep watching the NHL my goodness? What a joke.
-
Well, now I'm happy I stayed up!
-
And i am staying up for this crap...sigh.

I know this would never happen, but I would like to see 4 on 4 until someone wins. You can do 20 min periods or whatever, or you can just take away the time clock and play until someone wins. But that is far better than shootouts. Unfortunately, I don't see it happening. I do agree with what others have said about the shootout not being that fair in terms of it being a skills competition instead of team hockey. I do enjoy watching superstars take penalty shots though. That's fun to watch, but unfortunately a team's playoff hopes can be easily decided by a shootout which is pretty ridiculous.

Yeah, looking at the cup half full, I'm glad that for most of the games we have blown leads, we have at least gotten a point out of it. That has kept us right in it. If we can somehow get a streak going of regulation wins, even 4 or 5 straight regulation wins against the west, we can really move up. Big if, and I am not too confident at this point.
-
Yeah. The problem is that there's such a cram for the playoffs in the west that all the teams are going to trip over each other. Unless the Wings can put 6-7 game win streak stretches in a row against western teams, I don't know how we are going to come out on top of the pile of teams trying to win every night. I will say, this is a very exciting regular season, more so than I can ever remember, but it is quite nerve racking. Just thinknig of where we'd be if we had won half those games we gave up leads in late, we'd be in at least 5th spot right now.
-
Interestingly, I have not really heard of any trade possibilities coming from the Red Wings at all yet this year. What is up with that? Are they hoping with Franzen coming back that things will be ok? Is it just cap issues that they can't do something? I mean, come on. Something has to change with this team. I don't know if our D is just tired and worn out or what but we look slow and lazy on defense every night lately.
-
I don't get it. I just don't get it. We have not seen the wings play like this in 20 years. What in the hell is going on? Passes up the middle in your own zone as if nobody is around? Passes in the feet constantly or out of reach...I don't get it at all. Is it because there's so many new faces this year? Is it really the injuries? Most of the guys are back now and have been for several games. But even when we were not banged up to start the year they were playing this way. Is there any talk of getting trades done before the deadline? This team really needs something to kick them in the ass because while they still are missing key players, that is no excuse for the lazy play in their own end, and blowing leads every game late in games.
-
Maybe some of the powder they put on his face got in his eyes when he made that comment.
-
I'm not too confident about this one. I'd love to say we are going to go in there with malice in our hearts and wipe the floor with them, but I am just not that confident. If we play like we did last game, we'll get smoked. Here's hoping!
-
Him and Stuart both have struggled lately. I don't get it. It's like there's no attention to detail on defense at all.
