I don't agree with such a line of reasoning, but unfortunately thats the way it is. The HOF favours good players who have a long career (Cicarelli) over great players who have a shorter career (Lindros). I doubt the fact that Pav has lost over 100 games to lockouts, was a late bloomer, and never had his totals boosted by playing in the 80s and early 90s will be taken into account. I hope I'm wrong and that 4 Lady Byngs, 2 Selkes, 2 Stanley Cups and the most amazing skillset I've ever seen will be enough.

Exactly, we'll have to tank hard to be completely out of contention come deadline day. There are still 12 games left after the deadline, 5 at home, 7 on the road. However it does come after virtual back-to-back west coast road trips, so we may have a good idea how we feel about our team. The problem with being a buyer is that this team is a long way off 1 or 2 key trades turning us into a legit contender, as well as the ridiculously high prices last year (Quincey for a 1st, Gaustad for a 1st). The benefit of being a seller is that we do have a few expendable pieces that other teams looking to make a run would be willing to pick up. Franzen and Filpulla could both fetch a hefty return from a contender looking to bolster their line-up for the playoffs, and in world where Quincey and Gaustad are worth a 1st round pick, veterans like Cleary, Miller, Eaves and, er Quincey, should get a decent return. Question is, if we're 6 points back in 11th come April 3rd, will Holland have the balls to blow the thing up for picks and prospects and play the kids the rest of the way? If we're in that situation, I hope we do, otherwise our long slow decline will continue without an large infusion of young talent.

I think that has been the case for a while. Leino and Abdelkader being sent to the minors was what, 2009? And Babcock publicly disagreed with that. There've been other hints too, whenever we've had a fighter - Drake, May etc - Babcock has made a big deal of it. And of course, he publicly stated that the team has gone backwards the last 3 seasons after the Nashville loss and negatively compared our roster to theirs.

1) As I say every time the "fire Babcock" cry it taken up, you need to name a better coach, who is available, to replace him first. 2) Can we not at least wait till we have something resembling a healthy roster before we throw him under the bus? After all he's done for us, don't you think we owe him that? 3) If Babcock is fired, half the coaches in the NHL will be nervously looking over their shoulders at their GMs. There would be an absolute stampede for his services.

I think so. During those late 90s/early 2000s Western Conference wars, every off-season, and every trade deadline, it was us, Colorado and Dallas (and Philly, TO and NJ in the east) making big aggressive moves to bolster the roster. Someone posted a list a while back of all the moves Holland has made, and there were a LOT in those days. Some worked out for him (Hasek), some didn't (Ranford). OK, he's rarely moved core players, but that's not the Detroit way - thats what the likes of Toronto and Philly do every year, and look what success its brought them. If the Shanny trade was Bowmans magnus opus, what was Hollands? Kozlov and a 1st for Hasek? A 2nd and 4th for Stuart?

Strange appointment. I doubt his stock has fallen quite so low as to take a job as a scout. And I seriously doubt he needs the money. Like others have said, some fool of an owner will throw a pile of cash his way soon enough.

That or switch Abdelkader and Brunner. Give Z a big body to work the corners and front of the net, give Pav someone who can take advantage of the space he creates.

This thread makes me sad, since Cleary is a shell of a man preciselybecause he's given so much for the team over the years. So lets remember the good times for a while, eh?
