Was '97 or '02 team better?

That was me Kira. I always thought Larionov-Robitaille-Holmstrom was the 2nd line. Say what?? 0-2 down going into Vancouver? 3-2 down going in Colorado? Losing game 1 of the finals at home - I don't know if LGW was around then, but if it was, it would have been in meltdown. A nerve shredding 19 OT periods in Carolina. You call all that boring?

Was '97 or '02 team better?

OMG!!! Shanny is anti-enforcer!!!!! Back on-topic I always go back to what Scotty Bowman said when asked after he retired what the best team he coached was. He said the '02 Wings. This is the guy who had the 70s Canadiens with Robinson, Dryden, Lemaire, Shutt, Lafleur et al. The guy who coached the '92 Penguins with Lemieux, Jagr, Francis, Coffey et al. And he said the '02 Wings. As Kira pointed out, we had Brett Hull and Pavel Datsyuk on the 4th line!!!! The 2-0 win in game 6 in Denver is possibly the finest Wings performance I have ever seen (beats 2008 finals Game 1 because of the adversity factor). However, where are the '08 Wings in all this? They may not have had the depth of talent of the '02 team, or the toughness of '97, but for me, as a team, as a collective unit committing to a system and a style of play to achieve success, they were the best, machine like in their style of play. That injury riddled February robbed them of a chance to put up a '96 style regular season, and for my money they were only outplayed once in the entire playoff run (when they s*** the bed at home to Dallas)

    A brand new Flyer

Well, obviously. 7th round picks can turn into superstars, and #1 overall picks can be complete busts. Nevertheless a 1st and a 3rd seems like a massive overpayment. Especially in the cap world where it is absolutely crucial to have a steady stream of prospects coming through to replace those lost through Free Agency. This isn't the early 2000s when the likes of Philly + Detroit were perennial buyers at the trade deadline and able to replace lost picks + prospects with free agents.

    Leafs get Voros from Ducks

Burke can try and make the Leafs as "tough" as he wants, but until he starts adding actual talent they ain't going nowhere. And that my friends is the difference between the '07 Ducks and the Leafs.

1st and a 3rd? Wow, Burke actually won a trade

    Isles vs Pens

Beat me to it. They iced an AHL team for season after season. And all those looking forward to the rematch, don't bother. It'll be like the Buffalo-Ottawa brawl a few years ago when the league threatened all kinds of fire and damnnation if there were a repeat. In fact IIRC "Colie" was in personal attendance at the rematch.

2/9 GDT: Predators 4 at Red Wings 1

Whats with all these comparisons to '08 all of a sudden? We were a damn machine that year, 2nd in goals scored, 1st in goals against. Offensively dominant, defensively suffocating. And everyone bringing up February '08 (when yes indeed we did suck) is forgetting one tiny little detail - WE HAD 10 STARTERS INJURED!!!! Our top D-pair was Lilja-Lebda. I'm going to repeat that for the hard of hearing. Our 1st defensive pairing was Lilja-Lebda.

    Should Valtteri Filppula be traded?

A lot of those teams aren't the Detroit Redwings, and don't have Mike Babcock as coach. His system relies on the centre to do all the work, to do all the back-checking. When we are at our defensive best, it is because our centers are all over the opposition puck carrier through the neutral zone. Don't get me wrong, I like Hudler, especially when he's got his scrappy, go-to-the-net head on. He reminds me of this guy

    And he does it again!

I trust "Colie" to act with 100% integrity

    John Buccigross

Yeah, I used to love his column, but I went right off him about 18 months ago, mainly because he spent most of his time with Crosby's manhood in one hand and Malkin's in the other When it wasn't them, it was Ovechkin, making him no different from all the other mainstream hockey writers Oh, and when Detroit fans used to write in, he used to call them "whiners", but when Philly fans wrote in he called them "passionate". He did publish one of my letters though, said we should go after Jovanowski at the 2008 trade deadline Thankfully we got Stuart

    Should Valtteri Filppula be traded?

This. This, this, this, this this. A thousand milllion zillion times this. And as for Hudler playing center......as I've pointed out before the things Babcock looks for in his centers are skating, backchecking and "compete level", which just happen to be the threee weakest parts of of Hudlers game.

    And he does it again!

So has Cooke been suspended for either the Savard or the Ovechkin hit? Unbelievable montage in the Cherry video though, so many elbows to the side of the head and knee-on-knees

    2/2 GDT: Franzen 5 + Red Wings 2 (7) at Senators (5)

Happy for the W and the 5 goals for Franzenstein, but for the love of all that is holy, CAN WE PLEASE SORT OUT OUR DEFENCE AND GOALTENDING??????? Watching some of those goals against was embaressing, guys getting beaten all over the ice so easily.......including Lidstrom

    Observations from March 26th, 1997

Well, that was an awesome watch last night Loved seeing Maltby + Draper in their prime, after all the hate thats been spewed on this forum towards them the last few years, to see them skating, hitting and agitating was a joy. And lulz at the Ward - Severyn fight, when Severyn loses his jersey you can actually see the fear in Ward's eyes "Oh F*&k! I'm gunna get my face pounded! ". Luckily for him Devorski intervened, cos Severyn was in no mood for mercy

Thankyou so much for that upload - wife has gone out for a meal, kids are in bed. So why, yes, I do have an hour and a half 1st period - Soooo much hooking, holding and interference! Greatest call in Redwings history

Was Hockey not popular in the 80s?
  23. This popped into my head when I saw a comment in the recent St Louis GDT bemoaning his robbing Zetterberg (and Nash) of the Calder. Now of course, the further you go back, the less we all know about the players, but the names from 1970 onwards are familiar to most and in that period I can't find a Calder winner who has done less with his career than Jackman (and had such an undeserving winning season). An honourable mention goes to Sergei Samsonov, but at least he was a consistent 20 goal scorer at a time when scoring 20 goals was an achievement. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Calder_Memorial_Trophy Discuss.
  24. Mason gets a pass for 2 reasons. 1 - he was actually very good his rookie season. 2 - yes he's sucked since then, but its only two seasons. HankthaTank answered this for me, but I do also believe it was probably the weakest Calder winning season in the modern era. For comparison, Nick Lidstrom put up 60 points and was +36 in '92 and came SECOND!
