out of curiosity, how does everyone feel about Jimmy's purple helmet??? I for one think it is ass ugly...the Wings have, without question, the ugliest culmination of goalie masks in the league!

    Do we need more Canadians?

I saw that "The Donald" tirade as well and thought it was a bit ridiculous. I tend to think that when you enter the league, your nationality is thrown aside and you are judged by what you bring to the table. It is the management's responsibility to put together a well-balanced team of skill, toughness, defense, goaltending, etc. The reason teams to well or not well is because of their balance or lack thereof. If the Wings don't win the Cup, it won't be because they have too few Canadians, it will be because they are not tough enough or they lack secondary scoring. With that said, certain countries seem to produce players with certain playing styles. However, if a team needs a tough winger, they should acquire a tough winger. There is a greater likelihood that player will be Canadian, however, if he is Swedish, Russian, hell, even South African, who gives a s***. You address a problem by acquiring a player based on ability, not nationality. Simple as that.

    Flyers fined 25k

I'm a little bit surprised that most people in this thread seem to think of this as a joke. I agree that its not all that big of a deal, but 14 extra minutes in an intermission can be a big deal to a player, who has been conditioned to the same length of intermission for his entire NHL career. Not to mention the television broadcasts are all designed around a model with an approximate intermission length, and you don't want to mess with any combination of Gary Bettman and television. With all that said, I can see why the Flyers would want to have everyone there to honor Hexie, but I'm sure they could have worked it out better with the league so that it didn't end up like this. Also, for a NHL team, a $25,000 fine seems a bit more like a slap on the wrist than a "coming down hard".

2/15 GDT: Blue Jackets 5, Red Wings 1

Your from Windsor, so I assume that you see your fair share of TSN. You should no never to listen to anything that Pierre says...ever. Simple as that. I just love it how the stick him between the benches and he just thinks he's so damn special because he's down there. I equate it to when your like 10 and your going with all of your little friends to one of your friend's birthday parties, and the kid that you don't like gets thrown in shotgun because no one wants to talk to him, but you convince him that he's up there because he's special. That is exactly what it's like.

I agree that the most frustating part about the skid is that they don't seem to be giving it their all. However, you'd think that they'd come out flying because they are the ******* Detroit Red Wings and they are on a 4 game skid. So that fact that late in a 5-1 game they they are still being outworked doesn't surprise me. The fact is they didn't show up to play tonite. Period. Plain and simple.

Okay, so this is THE worst Wings game I have seen in recent memory. They have ZERO jump and are just getting beat in every aspect. The D looks terrible, slightly better in the second but still terrible. Zetterberg has been sub-par, and does anyone else notice that Holmstrom has been invisible of late (except for that obvious Anaheim goal). No, this game wasn't Ozzie's fault, he certainly could have been better, but I think they just took him out to get him out of the line of fire. O well. Does anyone here agree with me that I do not want to see Detroit score tonite at all unless they plan on scoring 5 or more? If they can get handily shutout in their own building by a division rival may it can bust them out of this horrible slump. PS. I am watching the game on TSN and during the first intermission they were talking about the slump and Mike Milbury (for the record, the guy who signed Alexei Yashin to that ridiculous contract in Long Island) stated that "this is not the right time" for Detroit to be going into this kind of slump. This made me think. Obviously, its never "the right time" for a team to slump, but if their ever is a right time, this is it. A) Given where we are in the standings, we have a bit of lee-way. B) There is still plenty of time before the playoffs to work through this s***. C) About a week and a half away from the deadline, it is a pretty decent time to highlight -- in an incredibly emphatic way -- to Holland the weaknesses that this team still has. Thus, Milbury is a ******.

A Fedorov return to Wings makes sense

You pretty much just said everything that I was thinking while reading through this thread. I want this guy back, because I have this feeling that when he steps back onto the ice in the red&white again he'll get a standing ovation that then we'll get that goosebump feeling, and then he'll live up to it, but like its been said in this thread, its a crapshoot. He clearly is NOT the defenseman that this team needs, but I think that he can fill the secondary scoring void pretty well, because he is a proven playoff performer. This is assuming that Holland isn't going to try to tade for one of the big boys. All in all, I'd be pretty pumped if on trade deadline day when I am watching TSN's Trade Central special, a picture of Fedorov's swarthy face and slicked back hair popped up in the top right corner, superimposed over the picture of the Winged Wheel! (But we still need a big defenseman!!!! Maybe another big forward, too!!!)

The homer call could possibly be a good thing

THis is true. Adversity doesn't only come in the form of losses. Close, come-from-behind wins can also build character. However, do you not agree that where we are right now, where we stand in the standings, a loss probably won't factor into where we finish (assuming our season doesn't completely go into the toilet, which it won't). WIth that said, I think that if you have the right guys in the dressing room and the right guy behind the bench, losses don't have to be demoralizing, but can be a great way to build character and to provide some fuel for the fire when it really counts. That's why I don't mind it.

The homer call could possibly be a good thing

I certainly don't think that its just you who thinks that. I can recall many people crediting our deep playoff run last year - as opposed to the collapses of the several years prior - to the fact that we were battling out the whole regular season with Nashville, getting us geared up for playoff hockey. I honestly think that this adversity isn't going to harm us at all. Here's a Need for Speed analogy. You put the game on a really easy setting, and you get off to a huge lead real quick, and then toy just coast for the rest of the race, and you win. THat's not what you want at all! You want to be in the heat of the action, passing and wreaking havoc on all the other cars, because a) its a lot funner that way, and b) it makes you a better driver because of it. Personally, I wany our Wings to be better drivers....er....hockey players.

The homer call could possibly be a good thing

Actually, when I was taking a short drive after the game I heard a little blurb from the guy on the sports radio talk show saying that they had an audio clip from Jiggy, and even he thought that it was a questionable call..... .....So, its him...just him

    Double Standard

Hye guys, I missed the end of the game. Did Homer score one near the end and get it called back for Goalie Interference?? Sounds like it was bad. Just how bad?>

    It's Time For Change

I certainly see where your coming from. Calgary did it with Kiprusoff, Edmonton with Roloson, Vancouver could certainly do it with Luongo, teams can make huge playoff runs with little more than a hot goalie. However, with that said, the suggestion of signing Luongo is easier said than done. I have a very good feeling that the Canucks and him wil come to terms in a very lucrative, long term deal before he ever becomes a UFA. To suggest that the NHLs far and away best team should take it in another direction does not seem all that reasonable. We're in a slump right now. Did you really not expect it to happen? We'll be fine. Our goalies are slumping, our team is slumping, it happens. What happened to the over-confidence that I saw (not directing this to anyone in particular) whe things were going so well. This team will step it up again, no question. We could still hit that 10 game wins treak, who knows? I think that one thing this slump does is highlight for Kenny that we may have a few more disposable players than we once thought. Plus, with Cleary out, I can see this forcing Kenny into making a big move. Its not outside the realm of possibility. PS I actually had a dream last night that we traded Holmstrom for Jagr, straight up. It was fricken hilarious. And then I was watching TV - in my dream - and they interviewed Homer and he was PISSED. Then I woke up, and it was just a nightmare, a terrible nightmare.

Who would you take, solid 2nd liner, or Dman.

Thank You. No way Kubina is worth $5. As far as I'm concerned, any of the contracts inked by Ferguson should be completely untouchable. They were all terrible; the terms were too long and the cash was too high. That said, after watching this game I am certain we need to add another top 6. Flip isn't guaranteed to show up every night, nor is Huds. Cleary was out, but still, I want another good solid top 6 winger. Make it happen Kenny.

2/9 GDT: Maple Leafs 3, Red Wings 2 (OT)

Gaaaay game. Boring as hell, and the fact that I had to watch it with my Leaf-crazy brother and dad didn't help out the situation. Dom should have stopped the first two, I don't care if it was deflected off ur own players skate, it still happened like 15 feet away from the net...bush league. Lids played solid, as usual. How much did you love just watching him decide the team was playing like ass, so he led a rush down the ice, crashed the net, and scored, that's a captain. Rafalski, on the other hand, played like s***. Too many turnovers and just stupid plays. Hank was less than solid, Dats looked alright. And the fact of the matter is that when those guys were on the ice, they flat out dominated for the majority of the game. Toskala was solid. Oh well, I don't mind the fact that we're hitting a snag in the road right now, now's a good time to do it, too, with the situation we are in the standings. Also, look at Sundin. He decided to show up about mid-way through the third, and he pretty much swung the game over to them, he can dominate like that. If he's gonna leave T-Dot, I want him to come here. The thouhgt of him in Anaheim would literally make me projectile vomit.

    Most amazing Wings stat

Absolutely you are. The fact of the matter is that, just like in the playoffs, everyone is trying to win JUST AS MUCH in the regular season, so it bodes quite well that we are having this much success. You just have to hope that the regular season success doesn't make the boys more submissive, over-confident, and feel that they don't have to work any less hard. Foretunately, with this team, I just don't foresee that as a problem.

Avery takes on one of his own

Interesting! Would it be giving Avery too much credit to suggest that he did this to try and fire up Malik and bring out his tough side? Or do you think it was just a case of a doushbag being a doushbag?

    Datsyuk Article

O ya, totally agree. I mean, thats just a matter of genetics right? He is not naturally built to play that way. And, know what, I love watching the guy play and I don't want to see him change a damn thing!

    Datsyuk Article

Physical strength in hockey goes way beyond just being a physical player. I guarantee you that Dats was not hitting the weights harder in some retarded preparation for a gooning match with Chris "closeted homosexual" Pronger. Being in better shape makes you skate stronger, be stronger on the puck, have better balance (all things mentioned in the article). And the more he continues to work out, the better he'll be with all of these things.
